    *There is a Recon front tire, per a very helpful and positive comment: part # 1925910005

    Up hear in northern California I run a Kenda equilibrium for the super narly off grid trails as it offers amazing traction without leaving a lot of tracks . It's soft and wobbly at speed but you learn just deal with it . I do wish for something with a little tougher side wall that's more damage resistant.

      🤘 You'll have to report back how they hold up to the abuse

    Thanks for the feedback. Ive been a fan of the recon and hesitant on trying the talon because I tried their emex tires and hated them. I am racing in 2 weeks and am going to try the talon.

    The talon is designed to compete with the jx8 gekkota from irc. They were tested side by side. The sidewalls are harder/stiffer maintaining cornering with a soft crown to put maximum traction to the ground. The bridges at the bottom of the knobs on the rear help hold the knob in place to minimize knobs cracking/breaking off.

    Great review!
    I might have to try the front tire, not too pleased with the Pirelli MT-21 here in central Oregon. Rather, it's good on hard pack which is the low percentage terrain. In sand, gravels and Cascade range lava rock crumblies, it's terrible.

    Getting ready to try the Talon in Flagstaff for an AMRA race on 6/4. Hopefully it works well there.

    I can tell you after running recons for a few years they're basically like a trials tire with a slightly more open pattern. The rear hooks up great on sandstone, but falls apart in gravel because they just don't have the bite. Living in Southern Utah, where we have more solid rock than anywhere, I'd still rather have a tire that hooks up in sand and gravel for climbs and getting in and out of washes, and sacrifice a touch of traction on slickrock. Talon looks like a way better all rounder. Want way better than that, get an MB5 just like the other guy said. A true desert beast.

      I'm about to tear the knobs off my MX34s, might try the MB5 next!

    I installed the talon front and rear last week. I have two solid rides on them My take is I love the rear tire. I think it grips really well, but does ride stiffer than the recon in the breaking is SO much better. The juries out regarding the front tire still it felt less confident than my worn goldentyre 216 AA.

      @podpocalypse9817  Před rokem

      Yea, I think you can get away with cheap rear tires, but the fronts are probably worth spending a penny on the tried and true variants.

    I want to like the recon and I do most of the time until there is 1 rain drop in my zip code. Not a great wet tire.

      I don't think you're alone-a lot of people complain about that with the recon and end up going with the IRC version (JX8 I think?).

    You should try the IRC M5B EVO! For hill climb stuff it doesn’t get better!

      I would put them on your short list, then your list will be over. Not saying for fanboy whatever, they're just truly the best rear tire made as far as hooking up goes. No joke, new ones will toss small boulders at your riding buddy. I'm gonna give the Talon a shot cuz I live down the road from RM and they're cheap, but about guarantee I'll go back to the MB5.@@podpocalypse9817

    Talon is a good tire a bad tire is the tusk crossbite.

    Maybe you should try using your front brake a little more when you're braking??

      Sudden stopping power does not come from your front brake, friend. Do you ride on flat ground?

  • @dirtspudoutdoors

    In smooth greasy rock my Talon was garbage compared to my JX8. The extra $25 was worth it for the JX8 IMO.

    • @podpocalypse9817
      @podpocalypse9817  Před rokem +1

      I'd always choose an IRC over a Tusk - they cut corners with the China rubber. Watched some recent JX8 vids and they hold up better, too.

      @@podpocalypse9817 100%. No lost lugs or chunking on my JX8 with 350 miles of WV, CO, and Rocky MI riding. 2 rides with about 20 miles on the Tusk and it has chunked bad in two places.

      I have a Talon on my 250 4T and a JX8 on my 300 2T. The traction is very similar but the Talon has 5hrs and the JX8 has 11hrs on a bike with more grunt and the wear is the same.

  • @chadrides914
    @chadrides914 Před rokem +2

    I think youve got it backwards. The Tusk recon knobs are harder than the talon, and as such would be a far better faster speed tire than the talon, which was designed to run in rocky terrain and perform like a gummy. The recon is designed to run as an all terrain tire at all speeds. Just hate people to interpret your video as the correct indication because like i said, youve got this backwards. The talon is not a good go fast tire with its extremely gummy soft knobbies quite the opposite.

    • @TheHighlands111
      @TheHighlands111 Před rokem +1

      They both have soft knobs but Talon has stiffer sidewall which is better at high speeds

    • @podpocalypse9817
      @podpocalypse9817  Před rokem +2

      Interesting. It must be the carcass affecting perception? That would affect softness - the carcass would flex along with the knob. The two rear tires have the same hours now. While the Talons do have some alternating soft knobs, the center feels distinctively stiffer than the Recon by touch.

      @joeysantos56 Před rokem +2

      Chase on RMTN advertise the talon as extreme hard enduro tire with stiffer sidewall and less life. Think I'll stick with my shinko 505 cheater. Awesome tire!

      It’s not even in the same sport as this tire. Totally different useage scenarios. Can’t be compared to each other. 🤦‍♂️
