To clean your pads and eliminate squealing, clean them with acetone and a rag. Do this two or three times until the glaze and discoloration is gone. I've been doing this on my DuraAce Di2 bikes for the past 6 years and it works like a charm.

I use a cheap propane torch from the local hardware store to burn-off contaminants from my brake pads. Using liquid cleaners to clean pads just pushes the contaminates into the pad.

I use MEK solvent to clean metal. It's better than Brake Cleaning solvents. Just don't get it on painted surfaces. People say once you get oil on the pads they are toast but that is not true if you clean them with MEK.

My rear brake got contaminated with brake fluid and had the same squeal. Sanded the pad and it did nothing. My dentist who is an avid cyclist said give them to me. He sand blasted them with a dental sand blaster. I sanded them a bit more and scuffed the rotor with 220 grit. It worked.

I accidentally spilled brake fluid on my mtb rotor and eventually contaminating the pads. i tried a degreaser, didn’t work, tried alcohol, didn’t work, I tried burning the pads, still squealed, it was RIP to the pads 😅

You can try to submerged the contaminated pad in IPA for 2 minutes and dry, it usually works for me.
If it didnt work, try burning them on gas stove for 20s, let it cool down, then dump it on IPA again and dry.

Great test. I have terrible brake squeal problems despite being meticulous in cleaning and not touching rotors. Cleaning with alcohol makes the problem worse, big descents dragging brakes temporarily fixes them. They are new pads as well so reluctant to trash them.

Would've been interesting to see if a degreaser or GT85 type spray also effected the braking as it's easy to spray on rotors when cleaning with those products... not sure how many of us would put lube from a bottle on our rotors🤣. Thanks for the content though man.

I presently have 6600 miles on my chain and still show less than 0.5 wear . Properly cleaned on a regular bases. For the first 3300 miles I used an oil base lube and then switched over to waxing . Now I am wondering hon many miles the chain will last . Cleaning works .

Waxing is the way to go. Prolongs chain life considerably, which also prolongs your cassette, chainrings, and jockey wheels. Less maintenance because wax does not attract dirt. The whole process is fairly easy to do.

A simple chain wear tool is a great investment. I admit I only change my chain when it's worn enough. But I can get many years out of cassettes and chain rings with consistent cleaning of at least my drivetrain. Great simple video to demonstrate the danger of cross contamination.

Going to ask as I didn't see in most of the comments, did you bed the brakes in first then test? or were they just raw each time? But yes the sound, i hate that sound on my discs took a new set of pads, not sure what they were contaminated with but sandpaper helped.....

    • @jonmaloneycycling7593

  • @danielellis663

I have changed pads 4 times in less than a year and cleaned rotors with alcohol. Bedded brakes in everything and keep all lubes well away from rotors. Within 2 weeks I get mental screeching and hardly any stopping power. It's embarrassing! Mechanic bled the brakes and cleaned them up as well. They are 105 disc calipers and I have heard that they can leak. What can I do?

Very interesting, some kinds of silicone oils are intended to use for car's cam belt to prevent from slipping at pulleys, so they are increasing friction. Also, since I start waxing my chains last year, they have immeasurable amount of wear (Also many rainy rides), one chain have 5000km and second have 8000km, I'm swaping them two times a week.

If you get contamination on your brakes and they squeal like in your demo all you need is some CRC De Squeak from your local auto part store. Works every time. Why pay a shop or spend a hour or more trying to clean with alcohol. You will need to clean some of the excess off after then brakes start to work properly because it's a bit messy. Honestly, if I could get smaller cans of this spray and relabel it I could make a fortune off you cyclists. You people spend crazy amounts of money on cycling crap.
