There's so many things I love about this soundtrack-the drums, the melodic shrieking, the hungry chittering of the creatures of the night, the scream of the poor young woman they've taken, and the final 40 seconds that sound like the sad, depressing, hopeless singing of angels that once had a holy influence in this formerly sacred, yet now defiled place.
*oh god i remeber when i played this at my friends place in his basement... i was like 9 years old.. and then his parents called him for dinner and i remeber i was sitting alone there in the basement and playing diablo i was so scared hahha Great nostalgi horror feeling*
You all have no IDEA how scary this was combined with the Cathedral graphics running on 2x400W 15" speakers with an amplifier back then. I was 8 years old, the sound will never leave my mind. Me and my friend were sold, they got another PC shortly after, Pentium 1 I believe and we multiplayed like no one had before. We were fresh meat, over and over again. But we figured out we could cheese him through the iron bars and beat him first time as a rogues. The rest was easy, man butcher really was the hardest boss. We got good after though and beat the game several times with all classes.
There is a certain intensity to the percussion in the classic Diablo tracks. Harem from Diablo 2 has some really awesome drum parts too that consistently give me chills.
I imagine that the smashing the drums are the his footsteps down to the dungeon and his heart racing as he's mentally preparing himself for the horrors that await.
Remember the time some of us had cool smart game iq thinking when it was not called that yet, some of us tried killing The butcher but failed then never the less we came back some of us trap him in the next level staircase and started firing bow arrows at him until he died and grab the loot he dropped 🥲 Good times
I remember the feeling in Diablo 2 when I entered the spider caves and suddenly heard this song playing. It was like being flushed away and drowned in a wave of chilling horror mixed with warm familiarity. This is the best dungeon theme in any game ever.
I don't think it's quite the same, it incorporates parts of this song (as do many of the songs in the Diablo 2 ost incorporate parts from the songs in the Diablo 1 ost).

The only time I encountered a demon (or maybe I was going crazy) was when I was about to walk my dog and I locked my apt door then my dog unexpectedly ran to my door and was clawing to get in. I turned around and felt all these eyes around me. Then the sights were concentrated right in front of me when I turned around. I felt this towering, heartless malice and that it was breathing my breath and that caused a shadow in my heart. I felt warped and like my guts were choking on my neck or something. I seriously wonder if Blizzard North's members went to a cemetery in the dead of night for inspiration in coming across either hallucinated evil or something. In any case if you want evil music check out the "Shadowman" ost, the group "Herbst9" or "Nitrous Flesh."

I have to come back and kill those bastards in the name of God!! God will protect me!!" Then my decapitated head was in the table of the Butcher and game over....
Diablo 4 coming out with darker atmosphere... It looks much nicer than D3, that's for sure, but the old Diablo always have the 'feeling' that maybe will never replicated in newer title anymore, no matter how dark or gory the atmosphere is -- the feeling of dread in every corner or doors you (slowly)walk into. You are a hero, yes, but not *superhero* with extreme martial art capabilities like the way newer titles portray, and there is time where you need to *run like hell* from groups of intimidated Goatman or charged Horned Demon -- the same way you run like hell from the Butcher. I think most people will agree that that feelings are completely gone in D3. For D4, time will tell...but I didn't expect much. Time changed, player base change. That's life alright. But there is always some forgotten gem that got left along the way...
