I think you might have mentioned this before, but the reason why we many “older kpop fans” like Fromis_9 is because their discography has a very nostalgic early kpop sound. Similarly with Seventeen, they give me old nostalgic boy groups like Infinite. To be honest I feel like Fromis_9 could even do a Kara Step 2.0 in 2022 and they would own it with the right budget. But hundred percent agreed that this mv was so plain. It just looked like a choreo video that had an intro (like Seventeen)… A huge contrast compared to DM that seemed so highly produced. Really hope its not a budgeting issue.

I’m glad they are finally giving Seoyeon singing lines! She trained as a vocal at YG for 7 years but she has been put as a rapper for most of Fromis’s career smh.
Same with chaeyoung - the falsetto lines from her combined with the lines from seoyeon are things we've never heard that much in title tracks so it's so refreshing to hear

Actually it's suit the concept since it's from our memento box, so jiwon look up for the memory that they made when they're on vacation throught her camera film, that's why they make it looks natural just like we capture some moment through our camera, yeah but it could be better

If you really like Seoyeon's voice, YOU'LL BE BLOWN BY THIS ALBUM. This album really did her voice the justice she deserves, and i'm gonna tell you that this album is Seoyeon's era
Seoyeon's voice sounds so good this comeback. I don't know if you've known this about her, but she was an ex YG trainee for almost 8 years! That's why she has this sultry and addicting voice. She was in a project group called, "Future 2NE1". AND THIS IS CRAZY! The members that were in the group was Seoyeon, Seoyoung (yg trainee in pd48), Billie's Moon Sua, and YOUHA (Abittipsy).
P.S. Seoyeon was like 10 years old when she filmed an MV with TOP and GD

I think Seoyeon has the “YG” feature in her voice which makes her vocal stands out from the other members. Her vocal also has the thickness so it doesn’t sound very high pitch and not as sharp as many other female idols.
I even saw a more color graded edit of this video
I prefer dm more than stay this way but this song managed to grow on me. I like how the rap in the 2nd verse is much longer. Jisun's "haneul wiro fireworks" also slaps haaaaaard! Their vocals never fail to impress and captivate you.
Btw i like Seoyeon's voice too. Her deep and sultry voice adds spice to fromis_9's songs.

Totally agreed, the song it self is VERY GOOD, literally been listening to it everyday since it came out, but when I saw the MV, it felt like they just dance on a different island, like that’s it , there were like no props or like big sculptures. It kinda felt like a choreography video. But overall , still my favorite song of the year probably cause Fromis9 is literally my ALL time favorites.
I'm so glad fromis went under hybe, the comebacks have been so frequent and I LOVE IT! Fromis comebacks just hit differently and this song just awakens my soul. Also CHAEYOUNG SLAYED
I agree with you on the color grading, I think they were going for the memory/ nostalgic concept with it? But overall it could have been done a lot better. Still an amazing song and their visuals are still crazy stunning.

I don't think it's simple tho, especially the fact they went to an island to Film in the nature. Their visuals and vocals make up for the lack of count of places they filmed in. It's not something more fun and interesting like fun or talk&talk mv but it's a very gorgeous and summery mv. I get it's not the highest of highest quality of mv but again it's a summer comeback.
Honestly I have to disagree, it's simple in an amazing way, it really shows off each and every member's visuals, I find myself rewinding parts just to see member's faces or expressions or to see the choreo - it's almost nice to have a simplistic summery concept for once!
@@TheGameware The simplistic concept is not the issue lol. It's the lack of lighting and color grading. The girls visuals did carry but the people making the mv could have done a lot more to make the simple concept looks better.

Yes, Seoyeon’s voice/vocals are so unique, I’m obsessed! She also has my favorite gg laugh in kpop! Hearing her laugh in Channel_9 and other shows makes me so happy.
Their visuals are an 11+ in this MV! I look forward to all my favorite visual moments in this regardless of the lighting. The warmer lighting is so beautiful, however, that I wish there was more of it. PD, highly recommend you watch their choreography video! I didn’t realize how much I would love this choreography until I saw it! Their outfits are beautiful too.
I think they meant it. Their previous work "WE GO" was filmed on a green screen with the concept of virtual travel. But this 'Stay This Way' is a real trip. So they seem to have deliberately excluded CG as much as possible to capture the natural scenery of Saipan. However, I think it is worth criticizing that the person's face is shaded or even used the gloomy sky as it is. However, I don't think it's such a bad result if it's a measure to show that it's a real trip. Contrary to the intention to show a lot of natural scenery, I think it is rather a disadvantage that there are too many close-ups of characters.
They went to Saipan to shoot the mv, but Idk how long they stayed there, but it definitely felt like they did filming for a whole day and called it good. Like you said "run and gun". term". The song and choreo is amazing, but the mv could have been better. I did like that they only did choreo and glamor shots
the probably needed many staff for their location shoot, pratically burning all company profit for this promotion. it just shows company's confidence for the group.

i forget where they said it but, they said they go to Saipan for 4 days 3 nights, and they filmed for 2 days in there

the color grading did bother me a bit but i think they were going for a more nostalgic feel because that’s the whole concept of Momento Box.
I honestly thought they were going for a faded flashback vibe since "from my memento box" but i was waiting for it transition into a full blown color explosion but it never happen hahaha guess it really is a weird case. music wise, AMAZING love the musical direction their taking even with the b-sides. soyeon killed every single track, jiwon and hayoung flexing with incredible belts. I really hope it translates into a rise in popularity. I think they really deserve it.
Right I thought they were taking that route as well which would have been dope af, like if that change happened during the first iteration of the chorus
i actually really like the video. like idk but it just feels really chill and like kinda personal? like as if i was at the beach with them. the lighting feels more natural like its the kind of thing i would see out of my own eyes. i feel like a lot of beach summer songs are super colorful but i really liked the more soft tones but thats just me

I think the lighting just followed the concept of the song. Look at the description in the MV :

Can confirm that the album is SUPERB, not unexpected for fromis though. They keep stepping it up, Rewind, Up And, and Cheese are particularly excellent, but Blind Letter is awesome too

i've seen a couple of people mention that their budget's gone because of the simple video/color grading, but if you notice, a couple of shots at the *beginning* and *end* of the video are graded differently and in a more vivid color. since they're going for a memento box concept (ji won starting the video looking through the camera thingy, which is a childhood toy i've also had), it makes sense that the video then seems a lot more simpler and color graded in a more nostalgic way. it's not vibrant because it's a little faded in the past, and "stay this way" has lyrics that long for things to remain the same, so for me i actually really love this comeback and its video!

I think fromis_9 is a breath of fresh air in an industry full of sameness. I like typical kpop sound a lot but some times you need something else and that's where they sit for me
You're right about the video. It kinda reminds me of the dance videos they shot in the woods for we go and talk and talk. Song's great though I can't wait for the listening party
I personally was blown away by the teaser (because of saerom's bubble shot and her face appearing after with that lil' bounce, nosebleed), but after watching the full MV, yes I agree that it is plain, having questionable colour grading and the general lack of pizzazz that many were expecting.
But I felt that it could have been viewed as an artistic choice. Reminds me of film cameras and the grainy-ish aesthetics that it gives off. The MV having mostly made up of scenes of the members posing and looking into the camera, really reminds me of how I personally look back on things. Like how sometimes when looking back at certain memories and being sentimental, I remember people when they're doing things and them making eye contact with me. Yeah a bit dramatic but the whole MV just gives off that vibe, and that resonates something in me.
So..yeah its not visually stunning, but tenderly nostalgic and sentimental..and I've come to like where they were going with this. Or I'm just reading into this really really hard
since the song and era is about going in a spontaneous trip to get away from everyday life, the unsaturated shots and lower lighting is for that relaxed, natural feel, a more personal feel, somewhat emotional in a way. for a typical mv, no it’s not doing what they are usually filmed for, but it does emphasize their concept this time around
I love when PD goes rambling nonstop lol. Not because I like seeing him getting frustrated, but because it really shows his passion towards filmming. Even though I don't know bananas about filmming and probably will never shoot something other than me doing stupid things with my phone, it makes me want to understand what he means.
I love stay this way. I feel like it’s reminiscent of their earlier tracks especially at the beginning of their careers, but is perfectly mixed w the new direction their songs are going. It’s just so good

The music video actually was directed by Paranoid Paradigm and VM Project Architecture. The same guys who directed NCT 'Simon Says', 'Universe', Aespa 'Next Level', Taemin 'Criminal', Hwasa 'Maria' and etc etc. I love it so much. Such a special natural vibes, like watching some indie movie.

You are 100% right about the color of the video. When I think of fromis_9, I think happy, bubbly, and bright. The distinct lack of color in this video just baffles me. They went somewhere that's inherently bright and colorful to shoot this. Where did all that color go? It was like Paper Mario: Color Splash where all the color had been sucked out by bad guys. Haha. The song is fantastic and everything I want, but the color desperately needed to be in here. Maybe then, the video would have really stood out. I have to think this was an aesthetic choice because of something. As to what that was, I can't say. But surely the old saying, "fix it in post" could have been used. The song is great, the album is great, but the video here... :l not so much.

It's not only you PD, a lot of people, including me, were noticing the lack of color with the release. They went to Saipan to shoot a summer song MV and got rid of a lot of the colors... and noone knows why.
This music video was shot like a medicine commercial where they list all the side effects at the end while the girls are playing and having fun. I love the song but even the song sounds like it. They could be singing about blood pressure and it would look natural
"Stay This Way” migh not personally beat "DM” but its still one of my favorite songs of the year for sure.
This mini is a serve ,too. Might be one of the best yet.

My only theory about the lighting is that they did the memory version of the album and that those memories are slowly fading in your mind.
maybe they intentionally edited this video with almost no color grading and played with the natural lights because they are already beautiful, just like what the lyrics said "Just Stay this way."
I absolutely love the song and it's likely I'll put it above 'We Go' when it comes to my favorite fromis_9 summer track.
As for MVs, I'm a simple person when it comes to whether I'll like it or not. If I can watch the MV on mute and still enjoy it from start to end, then it's good enough for me, and I can definitely do that with this one. However, I acknowledge that I just love looking at the members and am totally enamored by their visuals, so it doesn't take much for me to enjoy a fromis_9 video of any kind. Also, the MV has become my new animated wallpaper so in a weird way, the color grading is beneficial for my eyes and workspace since the lighter colors blend really well.
But yeah, I do agree that the MV is pretty simple, especially for a main title track. It looks closer to a performance video, so maybe a few more shots in different locations on Saipon would help spice things up.

Since they moved to HYBE....they def have a particular sound and dance style. On the one hand, it's kinda nice seeing a group maintain a style when these days it seems like girl groups constantly change genres. But yeah, the video was basically just a beauty shot showcase and super simple which is unfortunate.
You made several valid points. In my opinion, this is an outcome of the production team having to edit the song in a rush (a short period of time for MV production), which hinders the editor from having enough time to properly color grade the footage. The production team is most likely more focused on album sales as well.

more saturation might look better but in some footage in this mv it can make the members not highlighted because the sky is overcast. definitely the main problem was the original lighting choice when they're filming. they could go extra to fix that but like you said the budget might've gone somewhere else, and they might've deliberately made the decision to film at dusk to get the natural lighting and background, else they would've get some lighting on the members or film it at different times. not to mention that they filmed this at Saipan. might as well do it at sets or locally instead if they're going to over edit the footage.
overall I do agree that some clips look too washed out, but the mv looks okay to me until you point it out, so I think they did a great job already. 7/10. for me, they could've added more subtle story flows to add more immersion to the mv. the song is definitely 10/10
The production who made the video is a new one and they got fromis as their first customer... Good thing the girls are gorgeous for them to carry it out...
I think they really made it like a natural shots because the concept is about memento box which is the one on the start of the mv. It's more like reminiscing the summer feels and it was like they're using a camera film.

I am extremely grateful for fromis_9 success! However I do miss their old sound. We will never get another song like Love Bomb again and maybe that’s what makes it even more special. Regardless, it’s great they’re getting more recognition with this style of songs.
STAY THIS WAY is my new favorite title track, every section is great, especially the 2:40 part of the MV where they silence the instrumentals except (I think it was ) the bass. It's just sad that the color grading was a let down for this masterpiece.
Also, the whole album is a FREAKING BOP! I love Rewind so much, it's my favorite b-side from the album.

Answering your question, I really like fromis_9 too. But I kind of miss the former fromis angle that was a bit more edgy and unexpected, but always with very emotional and strong melodic endings... for example love bomb and fun!
I think now they've gone way softer, and even though the songs are good, it's almost like they lost what made them stand out.
