- Our guest this week is none other than the remarkable, DeMar ReRozan (The Chicago Bulls). This is his second appearance and as great as the first one was... this might be even better. In this clip, JJ and DeMar have an extremely open and vulnerable conversation around mental health and pro sports. The full episode drops tomorrow.
Subscribe to The Old Man and The Three podcast w/ JJ Redick (ESPN / First Take) and Tommy Alter CZcams channel today for more NBA analysis and player interviews. - Sport
This is why we do the pod. Trust me there are a couple other moments in the ep that'll surely go viral but we decided to lead off with this because it's such an important conversation to be had. Shoutout DeMar for being so open and vulnerable. The full ep goes up tomorrow morning so subscribe if you haven't already.
This is what makes this pod powerful, this kind of convo can only come from two players who respect each other being open. Much thanks for putting out great content!
happiness is not a straight line. Beautiful
LOVE YEW JJ
Galatians 1:10 God Bless yal
He really thought he could be kawhi and win a chip for Toronto. Needs to check in to a mental ward asap
As someone that’s dealt with anxiety/depression and suicidal thoughts, I love athletes like DeMar and K. Love. Love this pod for showing that NBA players aren’t just a commodity, and that they’re human beings too. Love you DeMar!! You got this man, we got this!!
I really hope you get the help you need. Remember that you are never alone ❤
Thanks for sharing, Shea.
Same dude, hope you’re in a better spot now
😂😂😂😂 nun new genius
Keep living on it always gets better
Shout out to DeRozan…dude is real
He's such a great guy.
@@JJRedick I’m so glad you’ve chosen this route for yourself, post career. It’s so awesome hearing these conversations and how people in your past profession operate on a daily basis. Great stuff and insight.
Went INNN last season too!
@@JJRedick jj, you should have julius randle sometime during the season or even rj barrett or jalen brunson.
IMO it’s easy for people to see pro athletes as “more than human” which it not fair. That’s why channels like this are so important. Keep it coming.
A lot of people see pro athletes as less than human, just products--that's why so many people are happy to constantly bash players
And they always justify it by saying they're making millions of dollars... yea true but that doesn't mean they don't have their own problems and battles
@@AyoDosTres I’d rather be depressed and rich than depressed and poor
@@ubereats3047 man shut the hell up, please do
@@AyoDosTres I’d LOVE to have battles with millions in the bank
As a Canadian, I miss this guy in Toronto. Became a Raptors fan because of him. Such a good player and a genuine person.
Same here miss him a ton. I remember the days before his rise but DeMar was such a great change of pace for the franchise, definitely the pioneer of our current culture and still my all time favorite player
Would love for him to retire as a Raptor
1 of the best raptors ever. He brought the raptors the best season.
This is so much deeper than sports. This is the kind of stuff that creates cultural shifts. Being real, honest, vulnerable, etc… and much needed healing.
"The toughest thing about being a success is that you've got to keep on being a success." -Irving Berlin. Great Podcast.
This is what it means to be a man. A few men have become famous off this rhetoric that being a man is about being dominant, ignoring your feelings and having a bunch of women but being a man is to be brave enough to admit you can't be strong all the time, seeking therapy and being vulnerable without thinking it's a "feminine" trait. These are the type of dudes we should be looking up to.
Amen brother
big facts. masculinity in todays day and age is grossly misconstrued
This reminds me of the part in The Last Dance where they talked about what a typical day for Jordan was like: being surrounded by press, fans, and paparazzi all day, constant interviews and filming commercials, work out deals, then go and drop 40 in a game and maybe take the game winning shot before finally coming back to his hotel room for quiet the first time, then do it all again the next day. How most people couldn't take the pressure of "Being Like Mike"
I'd happily trade him for my life as an employee in a third world country.
Hit me hard when he said "A lot of people say they’d like to be Michael Jordan for a day or for a week, but let them try to be Michael Jordan for a year and see if they like it.” Really makes you realize that it's not as easy as it is.
@@ninjedi6710 Yeah I still think most people would but the point was it's not as fun or easy as people think
Being famous sounds awful. Of course being a god-level athlete on a basketball court full of other god-level athletes sounds fun as hell for a game or two, but everything that goes on behind that would just ruin it for me.
Scary thing is that media has grown since then so the average player experiences so much more external pressure than players of the past. Then imagine how much worse it is now for superstars like lebron who grew his fame alongside modern media to how it is. If Jordan admitted it was hard than when he didn’t have deal with Twitter/Insta slander than it’s def hard for players of today too.
Top to bottom this is one of the best clips I can remember editing. Shoutout JJ and DeMar for going there.
You are the editor.
Kudos mannnnnnnnn
Really valuable video.
Thank you for this sit down as someone who deals with depression and anxiety always good to see it being discussed.
Hope you keep taking it step by step and continue getting better everyday in fighting it, and staying afloat. God bless man
Every episode of the old man and the three pod gets better. Great to see the players open up and be vulnerable about important issues too. Keep up the great work JJ and Tommy! 👌🏽🏀
Just had a conversation with my mom about putting too much pressure on myself. Be happy where you are so far and enjoy the journey because everyday is a blessing. Respect to you guys! Love the pod🤙
So much respect for demar. An absolute prime example of a leader and winner. Leaving a positive impact everywhere he’s been. We miss you in Canada
I know this has nothing to do with him, but I credit guys like LeBron who are able to be so mentally strong when people are hating, and scrutinizing him every second of the day for him since he was in high school, to still be able to compete at a high level year after year but also not always give in to what the critics have to say is astonishing.
Literally. Great comment
He been loved and having ppl d ride him for the longest he get more love than hate imo
@@nitoshadow I agree but you definitely can’t ignore how loud the lebron haters are, no matter how small a population they are.
We miss you in Toronto, Demar! Still one of my favorite players in the league!
It's nice to see players have a "safe place" being on this pod. There's no clickbait, tryhard narratives/titles. It's a genuine conversation about various topics w/ athletes.
DeMar is a superb interview, just all class. seems like a very warm, down to earth, open and introspective person. Loved the one he did with Shannon sharpe as well. He seems more willing to go a bit deeper than other stars
I just loved hearing this kind of psychosocial talk from genuine dudes.
Great stuff man
wishing demar only the best - he feels like an honest real nice person to everyone
Most humble man in the NBA #RAPTORS4L
looking forward to the full ep, DeMar you're my guy, no BS. Your game is so pretty my guy and JJ keep the hustle going. one Love..
This is gonna be such a good episode
I always comeback to this when I’m feeling down about myself
Basketball season is around the corner and these podcasts are back. 👌
Demar is such a smart guy, likeable and also a bucket! He a real one
This one hurt, these are HUGE life changes. You’ve got to be there mentally. Mentality plays a big role in your decisions and your future. Don’t give up!!! #motivation
Even after retirement men we are always going to have that burden of still wanting to be great and push the boundaries and to earn our place in society.
hit it on the nail.
Debo is a great player and great human. He's the reason I became a raptors and basketball fan.
Yup. This idea that because you fell in love with a sport and are good enough to make a lot of money doing it at the highest level, “you signed up for it.” The “it” being the mental pressure, the negativity, rudeness from the fans, the expectation of perfection. Mental health days are real, even at my 9-5. Imagine how real they are for guys with the lights constantly shining on them. It’s just… an interesting world we live in to say the least
Can’t wait for the whole episode. Thank you all
Poor demar. You deserve to be happy whether you are playing on not brother. I respect you bro.
The part that was mentioned about not being hard on yourself is something I struggle with daily. Part of the problem was how I grew up but the other part is that often times the feeling of showing flaws or exposing myself has often led to criticism of being sensitive and having toughen up all the while struggling on the inside. What has helped me has been my faith in God and having a prayer time but I feel what would also help is being able to share my weaknesses with others and having genuine care rather than be told or feel like you gotta get over it.
Love the honesty of Demar ❤️
Love This so much JJ , love hearing you guys talk and open about personal struggles it
Always great conversations with DeMar.
As someone who struggled with a lot, trust and believe a lot of people who have been faced with the same circumstances it’s about how you perceive yourself
Being in the public eye and PERFORMING on a huge stage, that kind of pressure on top of just being human is intense.
Thank you, Demar.
Toronto loves you Deebo please drop 50 pts on our heads this season 🙏
nice stuff, learned a lot, and much respect to DeMar and JJ
Love DeMar. He’s an artist out there.
Working extremely hard is extremely hard.. I hope the emotional side for Demar is lessened knowing he's achieving amazing things personally, and giving hope to alot of people.
Damn this video hits 🔥🔥
Staying focused, eyes ahead. The light is there! I've been on this journey for almost two years. I refuse to go back. I suffered. I cried. I hurt. My body hurt. But i was pulled up from what could have destroyed me. My focus is on our Youth. So they can stay of their innocence. I will fight for them till GOD calls me Home🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕💕💕💕
We're all human brother. thank you for being yourself.
I'm glad they both shared some real emotions and money can only mask the problems people face if you were unhappy with a dollar 30 mill ontop of that same dollar you'll still be unhappy. Athletes work they whole life for that 30 plus million but we've seen billionaires jump from buildings because they are unhappy. Check on loved ones and stay focused people
I can understand it man. Pro athletes have that drive that some of us can only dream of.
Man it’s crazy how our brains adjust to what we have. 14 year old Demar would be so stoked at all times living the life he is now but we get so used to what we have we always create things to bring us down.
This platform humanizes these one out of a million world class athletes like no other media platform. And I think that’s so essential and imperative for the casual sport fans to understand. We tend to not treat and look at these athletes as what they are… H U M A N S
man this makes me like him even more!!!!
“I can’t be happy until......” is a trap. Don’t fall for that Demar.
Anytime someone says “I Don’t Think I Can Truly Be Happy Until...." is a red flag to me.
DeMar steps up though. He’s figured out a system that seems to be working for him. Awesome player to watch.
So proud we get him to ball in a Bulls uniform
love this
True freedom/happiness comes from worshipping God as opposed to our desires, from fulfilling one’s purpose. The human consists of a body and a soul. Each has its sustenance. If you adequately feed both your body and soul, in a balanced way, you will be happy. The sustenance of the body is worldly things (food, drink, nice things etc) and the sustenance of the soul is otherworldly things (sincerity towards God, acts of worship etc).
You get this and you don’t need anything else
Do more bulls players interviews, get my boy Ayo in here.. I'm also a Duke fan from Chicago lmao ! #SeeRed #Devils 😈
Looooooove this!’
Humble!!!!
spelled DeMar's last name wrong in the description, but I can't wait for the full pod
Wow, JJ, I feel so bad for you. Infinite wealth, how dare I!
Anybody reading this,it’s a daily reminder that GOOD things take time. You got this, keep working and everything is going to be just fine I promise 🤞🏽🫶🏼
That's why I am glad to be off FB.
Demar is a great role model. This drive to want to work hard and be better is what separates people like Demar from Ben Simmons.
I can so relate 🙂
Goes to show how crazy Kobe Bryant is. Demar got burnt out from grinding to get better everyday, which is normal, and we all do, but damn my boi Kobe on a different plane. If you rank the hardest workers in the nba on a pedestal, Kobe would be on the top working out on said pedestal. His mental strength did not waiver and he always put it the work.
The realest in the league
It always looks like he has a mouthpiece in lol. Good guy.
True
That’s why I have no social media man. In the 2000s social media was about enjoying each other company. Now it’s literally nothing but everybody in completion with everybody. I use to hate on people cause I was like damn “I ain’t doing nothing with my life!” But then once I got off social media I was like , bruh they millionaires. I’m 29 making $400 a week. I shouldn’t be depressed about millionaires lol i should just live my life and do the best I can with what I got.
this just goes to show that money isnt everything
Imagine if 10 trips to therapy could fix you, I wish. Therapy has had me reveal a lot about myself. Im a work in progress lol, I'm trying though.
He’s literally posting Kevin Gates lyrics word for word… - “Grandmother Grave”
Winning cures all of that
the reason he feels down i doubt is because hes not won a chip, not how it works
@@sciurbs5787 then he should retire to find happiness. Why do something in which u don’t find happiness in
@@Andreonsixers when he retires itll probably be the same thing he wont fully be happy. so 🤷♂️
You don’t have to be done JJ. You can join the Big 3 😁
There’s an 💡
Took a shot everytime he said " you know " off to the hospital now. Wish me luck.
This has to be his MvP Season he had one last year
Raptors miss you bro
Miss being happy
Happiness is a choice, but it’s entirely up to you. Hope you establish your peace soon.
@@Ez3s I wish I was happy why wouldn’t i? But things always go wrong or get in the way when hopes get too high. Thanks tho
@@Ez3s You have a very poor understanding of mental health issues, lol
real talk :40-:59 fashoo
jj that guy
Love DeMar but it’s sad that people wasn’t giving Ben Simmons this much love when he addressed his mental health issues. It’s obviously not a competition but all should be respected
As a Canadian, hope he retires in Toronto!
Love Lowry but Demar my favorite Raptor of all time
Thanks reminding us that professional sports are played by people not nba2k robots
JJ was really crying about that new out of pocket max lol
Can you interview Tyrese maxey his mindset to workout is crazy can't wait to see him play this season
Millionaires that play a sport for a living complaining about their problems is something. Y’all are complaining about missing shots in a shoot around when there’s people out there who are homeless and starving? Whatever man😂
NBA players are depressed too im fucked 😔
Bro pops shouldn’t have took that sea moss
Mite retire without winning a ring; that hurts
Wish you was a Laker, Demar 😢
Demar is awesome. I wish if lakers took him instead off Russ
I think it's better for Demar to figure it out before he retires. It is because according to research, the positive effect to happiness coming from life event would only last for 6 months. It is unlikely that Demar's mental problem would just go away when he retires especially retirement does come with financial and motivational pressure for top pro players. Hope he can keep working on his mental health. He really deserves to be happy comparing many athletes. No matter how depressed he maybe, he stays as professional as he can.
W
Hey man, I’ve been there. Just want you to know God loves you. Jesus saves.
He gotta get stronger mentally
As a depressed and suicidal person I thought this would help me a little atleast but it actually doesn’t do anything.
I don’t know why I shared this but just thought I would
