  • Sega Master System 2 review! classicgameroom.com/vaultpages...
    Classic Game Room reviews the SEGA MASTER SYSTEM II video game console!! The Sega Master System II may be a lighter, cheaper, redesigned version of the original SMS without the card reader slot, but it features a sliding door and built in Alex Kidd game.

    The great irony is that the SMS2 was made to be cheaper than the original SMS, but because it was released in lower quantities it is more expensive to obtain today than the original, more fully-featured version.

      @zedeighty Před 7 lety +4

      Timstuff In the US, this is certainly true. But in the UK where I'm from, the SMS 2 is probably the more common model (it was almost at NES levels of popularity over here).

    I like to think I'm pretty knowledgable about gaming systems, And I've read many books on the subject, but can anyone tell me why sega felt the need to have a cartridge and card slots on the original master system ? Were they unsure which would take off? Were the cards cheaper to produce than cartridges?

    • @markchambers3833
      @markchambers3833 Před rokem

      A bit late but the MS1 was a remodelling of the Sega Mk III, originally for the western market. The Mk III supported card games to make it backwards compatible with SG-1000 games.
      The MS1 retained it as the card slot supported the 3D glasses as well as a series of small budget games released on the card format (as they were cheaper to produce).
      By the time the MSII came out, the card games had been discontinued and the titles had been reissued on cartridges. As there were only a handful of 3D games anyway, SEGA dumped the card slot on the reworked system.
      The MSII was intended as a budget system for younger gamers as the Megadrive/Genesis was SEGA's primary system. It's about as stripped down as it could possibly be; however, for all that, it's so well built that it's virtually indestructible and will probably outlive every other console ever produced.

    • @GoodTofuFriday
      @GoodTofuFriday Před 10 lety +4

      If you live in america then europe is to the east. Everyone here, at least in the upper east states, considers europe to be in the east, and asia to the far west.

      GoodTofuFriday What kind of television do Eskimos use? lol

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys Před 10 lety +2

      GoodTofuFriday lol. I'd get very confused with that kind of logic. I live in Australia, and consider both Australia AND europe to be part of the west. But... that's a cultural thing. Geographically, from Australia, America is to the east, and Europe to the west. The official definitions though are defined by England, because all lines of lattitude in the modern world (and timezones) are defined relative to the line running through England. Though this actually means Europe is technically in the east... (England is neither east nor west, it is the centre point of the system of measure. XD). America is then at the far western limit, and Japan essentially is at the far eastern limit. (Also means that going west from America takes you into the 'east').
      So... Really, in conclusion, geographically none of it really makes any sense, but 'the west' has a clear cultural meaning at least...

    • @cakestalker
      @cakestalker Před 10 lety +2

      Yes, through the Master System Converter or third party device. The Mega Drive is actually 100% backwards compatible with Master System, the only thing the converter does is change where the pins on the cartridge is connected since the cartridges are different. Why Sega did this is anyones guess, but I guess to earn money off the converter? Think it backfired. While Master System was successful in Europe, I understand it did bad in the U.S. Having Genesis\Mega Drive play Master System games out of the box would have increased it's popularity and sales in that region I'm sure.

    I miss the tactile factor of classic game systems. I just bought a Sega Genesis model 1 at a thrift store and man, does it bring back memories. You pop the cartridge in, flick the power switch and you're ready to go. It's so satisfying. New systems just require you to insert a disk in the drive and start the game from a menu, which is dull as all hell.

      Good luck, be sure your tv had RF video support cuz the model 2 lack AV composite.

      *** VOAN *** Luckily European TVs have quite a variety of sockets to use.

      ***** That's great, I had a TV/VCR that had both RF and RCA but the RCA plug doesn't work so I had only play all my games through the coaxial plug and with RCA converter. My HDTV had RCA and HDMI support but the AV quality and HDMI quality in playing retro games on those were mediocre at best plus they often lag most of the time. I had nothing against RF but just don't like using those cuz overtime those coaxial pin tend to break. Back in the 16-Bit days, I had gone through at least over 20 of those RF coaxial plugs, it was crazy.

    Hehehe finaly a master system review, after such long time, too bad he couldn't make it work on a western tv set? Also the ending was stupid BUT to make it work on a us tv set you do need 1 a pal vcr with composite out, 2 (unless a us tv does support pal via composite) a pal to ntsc convertor, 3 a step up convertor to convert 120 into 240 volt,ntsc games should,ve no issues apart from speed differences and possibly some timing issues, depending on the games you play on it.

    Original master system looks like it's right off the death star with the black and red scheme and fonts. Cool system. I think for collector reasons I'd get the og

    You should really consider buying a PAL TV. You get so many PAL consoles you really need one.
