Nintendo's Prototype Wii Emulator for the GameCube

- In 2005, Nintendo’s engineers were working on early prototypes for their next console, known to fans as the Nintendo Revolution and eventually the Wii. But even though most of its hardware had already been designed by the end of the year, they hadn’t produced any working consoles yet. The console that Nintendo showed off at E3 2005 was just a plastic shell, as core components hadn’t even been prototyped yet. The teams working on the Wii’s operating system needed a way to start development to get everything ready in time for the planned 2006 launch date, so Nintendo’s engineers quickly built a system that would use a GameCube development console, three special accessories never meant to be seen outside of the company, and two PCs each running different operating systems to let them start working on Wii software without actually having any Wiis. This is the story of the Revolution Emulator, Nintendo’s prototype Wii emulator for the GameCube.

Imagine still wearing a face mask when it's almost 2024
@@ArtieArchivesWhen people said they would continue wearing theirs even after the pandemic during corona time, I didn’t actually believe them. Why chastise yourself like that?
@@damian9303 What do you mean?
@@ArtieArchives it’s a rhetorical question, not particularly aimed towards you but to those still wearing face masks even after the pandemic officially ended.
@@damian9303 Oh, in that case I agree with you
Something interesting about the Wii's design:
It doesn't have a normal operating system. All games run on bare metal. The Wii System Menu is practically just a game built into the console, and the popup menu when you press the home button is built into every game individually.
However, the Wii also has a co-processor called "Starlet," which *does* have its own OS. That's the one mentioned in this video. It's in charge of trying keep things secure and providing API interfaces to games (e.g. USB access).
The DSi is very similar, there's some boot stuff that initialises things like the Wi-Fi card, and then it just kicks you into the main menu. All the apps are just ROMs, even the main menu.
Is that why the controllers lights turn off for a small period then turn back on almost instantly?
@@diamondjebgold9906 Probably.
Interesting...
@@tredI9100 does that in theory mean the main menu can be emulated?
I can't believe we're STILL discovering new Wii and 3DS era stuff. Amazing!!
There's still weird indev bits and hardware being discovered for even the GBA, and given newer consoles are so much more complex I doubt we'll be "done" learning about the newer hardware for some time.
So the wii wasn't two gamecubes duct taped together, it was a gamecube, a bunch of weird boards and TWO pcs duct taped together!
It was a decent amount more powerful and gamecube was more powerful then ps2. Why dont you compare the xbox one x to the series s. It is a smaller percentage improvement over it then the wii was to the gamecube
To be fair the Wii had all of these peripherals and Wii motes so it was a Basically a GameCube with Side Activities/Mission 😂
The Wiii U is basically a GameCube and Wii Tied together and the switch is a Wii U game pad with detachable controllers 😂
@@rayojordan2838? what is 😂 for?

Hello right there.
I'm an owner of 2 RVL-Ocean-X12 boards and 1 RVL-Turtle-01 board.
I'm currently doing research to make this work and see what's inside "RVL-Turtle".
What I can say based on exterior, and research :
The RVL-Ocean-X12 board is an optical disc emulator. It also seem to be the power card since you have to plug a GCN AC Adapter to make it power up.
The RVL-Turtle-01 board is a "disc" containing software or firmware. Since no one was able to make it work, nobody, even me, can theorise on what's inside.
Since it's an ODEM, the ports to "connect to the Wii disc drive" are probably ports that connect to the Wii directly and substitute the mechanical drive. I'm not sure on this one, I have to grab another Wii to further research (and also a GCN).
Since I have 2 boards, I can spot what's missing on the better one. It's just a matter of 1 capacitor, 3 small components (that I have on the bad board) and 1 switch. Although I might not even need the small components and the switch, because it has clearly never been there before (contrary to the capacitor which is ripped off).
On my YT channel, I will soon do a presentation of what it is (only in french though).
But I will, on my Twitter, provide all the small details of my progress in english.
This board is quite mysterious and I want to know what's inside the RVL Turtle.
The editing quality is insane. I initinaly thought this video was from a channel with thousands of subs. I hope you don't stay criminally underrated
I though the exact same thing!
I wouldn't say it's insane, it could be better, but otherwise I agree.
It is now a channel with thousands of subs 🎉
@Grayson2763 funny how quickly it can change if you get the CZcams algorithms attention. I found the video from recommended section.
Wow, this looks like an surprisingly in-depth explanation of how nintendo developed the Wii... Without the Wii! Thanks for making this video, this is really fascinating content.
So is the Wii just a repackaged GameCube but with extra hardware?
Subscribed! Can’t wait for the next video!
great video, really in depth and explained well. i subbed
Your content is very good and really informative ,you should get more visibility, i will share this video to some of my friends, i hope you do well in the future.
This video would be good from a channel with 5 million subscribers! Keep up the good work!
very well done video, i’ll be subscribing and checking out your other videos 👍
Was the version of Vista they used a prototype or did they get a final build early?
Sorry for the confusion; they used XP, the text is just there to clarify because the footage shows Vista. - K
Your video was really interesting few years ago I found out a way to get NDEV, RVT-H, RVT-R. The history behind all this prototype is nice to see for the public.
Love the research put into this documentary!
Thank you!
This is incredibly thorough! Sub’d
This is a fantastic video!
great video 🎉
Nice video
This is a pretty clever workaround, for hardware limitations at the time, and the fact that they combined all that, into one little white box, is pretty incredible when you think about it, and my original Wii still works to this day, as if it just came of the box!
This was just a prototype thing, it's not in the actual Wii.
Wow that was great! You know your stuff!
I really want to see the early programs on that thing, like the Virtual Console and web browser!
The last song in this video is my favorite song in AC!
this is awesome
This is very interesting
1:07 "Driftveil City" kicks in 😮💨 (some Song from Pokémon Black and White I dunno)
so I am NOT alone :3
Theory: I think this might be why the algorithm is pushing this video now..?😅🤔
@@espset1234 Probably... wait, you also noticed?!?
Oh yes I noticed😅 A few weeks back my girlfriend was dancing to some tiktok and my brain went "wait... This is familiar..." And now this tune is absolutely everywhere, and I just got a feeling the algorith has just gone full driftveil these days😅
What a convoluted setup
Very interesting documentary!
Reminds me of that LowSpecGamer video where he talked about DS Games Beeing developed without a DS
holy shit, my local games store had one of these years ago but i never knew what it was. i've been trying to find this dev kit for years.
Very Appreciated "Joy" Jump Scare
That's badass!
I realized that the Revolution known as the Wii really was a upgrade of the GameCube.
So much for being the next revolution
Those homemade handheld gamecubes are usually a trimmed down wii.
Hope its running on swiss and co ?all tuning chips ?
I LOVE PERSONA 3 SOUNDTRACK
I get that driftveil is a banger but man every youtuber who does video essays are sure doing their best to kill it.
Nintendo: "Emulation stifles innovation"
Also Nintendo:
okay i knew the wii was already a souped up gamecube but that's wild :o
List of music? That first song is so familiar! Persona 3 maybe?
Your telling me the modding community might make my gamecube into a Wii
Well! I did see GameCube Games work within the Wii!

1:22 when you put a music that turns into meme
Why do i currently hear everywhere the song of driftveil city from Pokemon gen5? xD
I hear P3 soundtrack and like immediately
Just wanted to mention, the Homebrew Channel audio you use for your intro seems a bit loud and bass boosted. Might just be me though, as I'm wearing headphones.
Thanks for the feedback; part of it is bass boosted for added effect. Hopefully we'll get our own intro theme soon :P
What is the first track, it sounds like it comes from a bootleg Persona game but I've heard it a lot lately
The music's sourced at the top right corner of the video, it's a remix of P3's Joy BGM from Persona Q2 (3DS)
@@chiptunesoprano czcams.com/video/Src3czHw0sg/video.html god this sounds so much better
got to start somewhere.
uhh why is ur intro just bass boosted homebrew

this video is nice but Pepiseto's hampster bites him
Just further proof that the Wii was just a Game Pube that could take full size disks and used motion controls.

ALL I HEAR AND SEE IS FUCKING TOOTHLESS DANCING, HELP!
Great video but the thumbnail needs some work. I‘d suggest you use a bright picture of the gamecube with slightly better visible text. Otherwise this video was wasted effort 😓
Thanks for your feedback; I tried to make sure that the text would stand out in the thumbnail, which is why the picture of the GameCube is dimmed. Even if the dim GameCube prevents it from getting more views, I don't consider it wasted effort. - K
@@RGDCZcams Sorry was a bit harsh, I just meant to say you deserve more views 👍🏻
now wiiu on wii

Makes sense tho, it was released in 2002
They didn't, they used Red Hat.

PERSONA
When people say the wii is just a overclocked gamecube there not lieing
It can’t be any stranger then this, that’s like prototyping a snes using a nes with a mmc5 expansion chip and a pc with more ram and rom to simulate 16bit graphics that way,
1 thing I NEVER understood is why everytime you start up a wii game you will see that ugly curved background border,as if nintendo wanted to fake a curved crt screen on it dor retro gamers or something,i just didn’t like that .
It was supposed to mimick a wall of TVs at a store, each displaying a different channel - LCDs were new at the time and the curved CRT shape was probably seen as more evocative.
And with some modern kompression and encoding, other bit rates and taktik its running faster than a wiiu 😂😂
Why did they use a Windows machine just for a disc drive, why couldn't they do that on the Linux machine too 😭
It was based on the existing GameCube disc drive emulator software for Windows, easier to use two PCs than to rewrite it for Linux.
What a mess, it’s too many stuff glued together to make it work.

People really, really need to stop putting any PCB, let alone rare ones - on a carpet! No
