• How Persona Explores D...
One of my all-time favorite series of video games is the Persona series. There are countless things I love about each of the individual games, but something about the third numbered entry, Persona 3, and its particular story and themes has just always stood out to me as being so uniquely brilliant.
P3's main thesis is very heavy, but strangely simple: Death is something that each and every one of us will eventually have to face, and is an aspect of our existence that we mustn't ever let become lost on us. This theme is established as soon as the very first opening cutscene, and is then carefully explored through just about every single aspect of the experience, from the characters, to the lore, to even the game mechanics.
In this chapter, I discuss the untold origins and history of Persona 3's infamously terrifying main antagonist: NYX. Thank you so much for watching, and Memento Mori!!

I think what makes Nix terrifying is that unlike the other malevolent gods in the series she's not really evil, she's just fulfilling her purpose. Humanity wishes for death so Nix, as the embodiment of it, comes to give them that.
What makes Nyx terrifying is she's not a malevolent god at all. She's not the embodiment of death, she is the literal progenitor of death as a concept. Erebus is the malevolent god representing humanity's desire of death, but Nyx IS death itself.
Funnily enough, while Izanami and Jaldabaoth claim to act in response to humanity's wishes they each feel like they act maliciously. And they basically bring about everything bad that's happening, in a way.
Whereas with Nyx, she truly was brought about by humanity's hand. From Mitsuru's grandfather's experimentation to that dude's behind the scenes activities. All that Nyx do was respond to their wishes.
@@SirePuns Both Izanami and Yaldaboth take a shallow aspect of humanity, the desire to not face the truth and the desire to be safe, and twist it into dangerous extremes. Izanami tries to create a world where everyone lives in lies and falsehoods while Yaldaboth creates a rigged game to "prove" that humanity wants to be controlled like puppets.
@@ScorbunGamefrom what I understood, they don't take shallow aspects of humanity, they ARE the shallow aspects of humanity arisen from the collective unconscious, and taken to the extreme. They are the Shadow. Just like Erebus takes that shallow aspect that yearns for eternal peace... and becomes a beast that calls for death.
Nyx is just death itself.
Why does this sound like the lacrimosa of dana's final boss (forgot the name) that thing was also not evil.
The moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate...
Entrusting his future to the cards, man clings to a dim hope.
@@TheJaredPunch Yet, the Arcana is the means by which all is revealed...
...Attaining one's dream requires a stern will and unfailing determination."
Something else that makes Nyx unique is that, unlike pretty much every other final boss in Persona (besides the new one in 5R), she's not some manifestation of humanity's darker cognition (that would be Erebus), but rather a godlike being who's been there before the Collective Unconscious was even FORMED.
Pandora from p1 is also pretty unique.
Nyx being an eldritch entity is one of the coolest aspects of SMT lore as a whole! Great video.
(still hope Elizabeth succeeds and door-kun gets to finally rest some day)
ELIZABETH FOR PERSONA 6 MC WHEN!?!?
Well if you take Maruki's deal...
Wow. I noticed that persona 3 is really similiar to Evangelion in some ways (like Ryoji play basicly the same role as Kaworu, has similiar personality and they even share the japanese VA, and in the scene on the bridge you can see Ryoji using a skill that looks suspiciously like AT field), but I have never realized that even their lore is so similiar. Some deity arrives on Earth in a planet, forming the Moon from debris and starting the process of evolution? The fruit of knowledge? Heck, the S.E.E.S. even defeats shadows like NERV angels, not knowing that their leader’s secret goal is leading the humanity to some kind of salvation. And the final one of them is a human form of and elder deity.
Now I finally understand why I love this game so much.😅
Ryoji really was a great person even though he was human for a very short time, he was very considerate of the human condition and perspective. also your doing a great job on this it was worth a watch.
Oh hey, what's up!! I remember watching your Nyx video several months ago and commenting on it (great video btw)! If I recall correctly, I was pretty close to finishing this very analysis project at the time and even told you about it, so I'm really glad you ended up being able to see it!!
And yes you're right, Ryoji really was one of a kind. I'm currently in November in Reload, and it's making me fall in love with and mourn him all over again ;(
Again, thank you so much for watching, man!!
@vacated3188 thank you for being a kind person and making such great content! it's a great contribution to the persona community. I hope you have a great day!
I kinda like that Nyx is so strong that arguably the strongest persona protagonist couldnt even kill her
And even then Elizabeth has to go to the moon and kill Erebus regularly. Poor guy has no breaks.
I don’t think he was the strongest tbh, Yu literally had the Japanese god of creation from a unique Arcana which embodies life as a whole. Makoto had multiple unique Personas like Thanatos and Messiah and had the power to sacrifice himself to stop Nyx. Which makes my previous statement sound stupid but the god of creation and destruction most likely scales up to Nyx itself as they both served similar roles considering this story, let alone how far he outscales Thanatos or Messiah. Not to mention Makoto also needs an evoker while Yu can just summon his persona at will(the only exception to this rule being in his final battle but he can only do one move with that and its not a win move but rather a stalemate).
I think Yu scales higher than Makoto but both are great. As you said it can be argued 😅
@@xornedge8204 I think Makoto is the strongest because he's the only person to have the universe arcana, with it Makoto was literally able to seal death itself, plus hes the only protagonist able to summon multiple personas as the same time and use Armageddon (It's useable in P2 but you needed multiple people to do it so ig makoto is just strong enough to use it by himself) I do Admit Makoto has the weakest ultimate Persona but i think his Universe Arcana and Fusion spells make up for it
@@xornedge8204 Izanami is just a very powerful shadow created from the collective unconscious. The closest things we have to gods in personaverse are Philemon and Nyarlathotep, both anthropomorphic personifications of the collective unconscious itself, and Nyx, an actual alien/eldtrich entity born outside of humanity.
@@BrBetim Isn't Nyx also basically the mother of all shadows? like they wouldn't exist at all without her
Given how Persona is an alternate timeline to SMT1&2 and the events of Devil Summoner and If also happen there, does that mean Nyx is also present in a way in all other universes of Megaten? I mean, Devil Survivor 2 has showed the existence of aliens as antagonistic godlike beings and in the Digital Devil Saga games, God/Brahman is the core of the Sun itself.
And the Collective Consciousness IS the source of the demons/Shadows/Personas in the whole franchise… so maybe Nyx is one the responsible of the most fucked up supernatural shit that happens to humanity while given it the potential to harness it to defend itself and thrive against its own incarnated fantasies and emotions. The Axiom may possibly have influenced, too.
well Life and Death are the two side of the same coin as if there is no life there is no death and if there is no death then there is no life
Im pleasantly surprised to find such an interesting channel, W video brother!
Great video man. Very nicely edited with tasteful b-rolls
Can Nyx really be a villain when she's/it is just a concept, Persona 3 is pretty much a "Humanity vs Nature" kind of story.
Nyx is so terrifying that I’m pretty sure not even Maruki (who can alter reality) can stop her… let alone defeat. But I dunno.

I think Eternal Punishment Joker and Nyrarethotep are more creepy design wise.
I think design wise Pandora is way more terrifying.
What about nyarlathotep?
Oh yeah, for sure, can't forget about him!
Honestly, I think that the "most terrifying Persona villain" title could very reasonably go to Nyarlathotep as well, especially since he is much more of a traditional "villain" than Nyx, who's ultimately just a neutral, antagonistic force in comparison.
Though I think it is worth noting that, while Nyarly is certainly the more evil and insidious one when it comes to his motivations, he ultimately was still born from and exists within humanity's collective unconscious, which is something that Nyx operates above and outside of completely.
Nyarly may be an evil interloper who's bent on and fully capable of toying with and destroying humanity, but Nyx is an entity that, regardless of it's true thoughts or intentions, can and WILL destroy the entire world and everyone in it the moment that it reawakens. Both of them are utterly terrifying, but Nyx undoubtedly has a much stronger air of finality to it.
But that's just my interpretation. Feel free to keep this discussion going, I absolutely love talking about this kinda stuff, and would love to hear what you think as well.
Thanks for commenting!!
