Sure others are faster and more capable or rarer and "cooler" but this one is practical, fast, fun, and cheap! How can you go wrong???
I own one and it is as fast as the 2011 model, i havent compared it to models newer than 2012
Great video!!! I can personally vouch for everything you've said! I CONCUR! One interesting fact you did miss, it was listed as actually 1kg lighter than the 600 model at 168kg dry (370lb) for the same year. Your video brings on some serious nostalgia! Those stats are absolutely spot on too! The 954 was my first big bore sports bike, and i drag raced, and stunted it (just wheelies and stoppies). Best ever quarter time was a 10.29 (factory set up) used to dial in 10.4 and do it consistently, with 1.7sec 60ft times consistently too, even 1.6 possible (although i never achieved 1.6). Clutch feel when launching was perfect, and subsequent models (08 and 17) feel disconnected in comparison.
I used to run SC2 or even SC1 Pirelli superbike tyres. With a 180 (instead of factory 190) wide rear and an Ohlins steering dampener dialed up pretty high, it handled like an absolute dream. I miss it, and thanks again.
HeroRR Great bike, I feel absolutely the same as you mate! Riding this thing since 20.000kilometers and I still love it. Longest day tour was about 700km‘s and it was no problem, it is just amazing.

@ Almost, I rode a SC 57 of a friend, I test rode a SC 59 (I considered to buy, but didn't) and I test rode a SC 77. SC 50 still is more than enough power, super light and the most comfortable of all. But I have to say, the SC 77 also feels like a 600 (maybe because it is the first modern blade to reach that low weight of the sc 50)
The last Fireblade designed by Tadao Baba hondas Chief Designer and he absolutely put his heart and soul into it.. I have one with only 5k miles on the clock and I absolutely love it. A future classic for sure 👍

I got the 929 I couldn’t afford the 954 at the time there wasn’t many out there. I got the 929 and I’m still not disappointed im besotted 🥰 no plans to sell or upgrade as of yet there is no need. Is it worth paying 10x more for a new bike. I don’t think so

I have to agree with almost everything he has said about this bike. Me and my dad recently completely disassembled and rebuilt our 954 all the way from a bare frame and the bike is so well engineered. It looks incredible and the weight is so low, when I move the bike around it feels like it weighs nothing like literally nothing. The bike does sit low but it's what makes it amazing and when he said you would struggle to keep up with one on the twisties he's right, when I go on the back of it the bike just leans from side to side so easy and you get so much power even at 50% throttle, I mean seriously I've almost fell off the back even at 50% and we reached 100mph faster than you could say holy shit. The bike will go up in value for sure, it just needs discovering first.

I get an 0530 hrs/10 mile freeway commute.Esp. after Covid,weekday mornings are like weekend traffic.If I simply roll on the throttle at 75mph,and within 5 seconds ,I gotta slow the hell down!

Just rode another 100 miles on my 2002 CBR954RR today....it's almost up to 44k miles now and still looks new and runs fabulous!

I actually sold my Panigale 959 and went back to a 954 blade, because it just... feels better. More predictable in the corners, more planted at high speeds, better (longer) gearing.... Just love this bike. I miss people taking pictures of my 959, it's so gorgeous, but hell, in the end it's about riding it.

Definitely!! Everything he said is true. I have NC23 400rr and it feels like it’s heavier than my 954.
Fantastic bike however the best motorcycle Honda have ever made for road use has to be the rc51 (sp2). I’ve owned both the 954rr and the sp. Both are awesome but the sp is in a different class, no good under 60 mph but crank it up and the handling is unbelievable the faster you go the better it gets😊
Totally agree! Every time I think about moving over to a newer 1000, I jump on my 954 and am totally satisfied. There is really nothing this bike can't do. Love it!
Totally agree. Newer 1000’s have more power and all the gadgets, but built for track. 954 was designed to live with on the road. Such a good bike.
Rebuilt one with my brother 5 years ago. He was upgrading from an R3 and it was the perfect bike for him. He really appreciated it since he made it his own and learned how to work on the bike himself with the manual. Parts were easy to acquire too.
The 929 remains my all-time favorite, 'cause my dad owned one back in the day. But the 954 comes a very close 2nd place. I love all the bikes from this period. :')

I have one and it's amazing
My first bike
I had both and the 929 was softer with its suspension in a better way on the roads. A bit smoother on bumpy roads, The wheels always stayed in contact with the ground and it felt so naturally correct on the road.
The 954 was firmer, still very good, just a little harder. But I never went to a suspension expert, so I can't be sure if wasn't just a suspension setting variation between my own bikes.
The 954 was great for track days, easy to get the knee down.
Lightweight, nimble, enough power, Honda quality.
Even after 10 years the 954 still looked fresh. I kept in a garage, dust cover over it always. But I would ride all year around if I wanted to. Heated grips for the win:-)

I fulfilled my childhood dream of owning a big sports bike by buying one of these here in India, it's running on fifteen years but it still looks so contemporary, i bought a new battery, a new chain and tyres and my mechanic restored it beautifully. It's so smooth i love it

@@me2ontube true dat, there's no comparing the roads to Europe, the US, Australia perhaps. The free ways are much improved though, but owning a liter class bike here is really just for the kicks. I do most of my riding early between 6 and 8 in the mornings on the motorway. It's the only time when these bikes can stretch their legs without attracting too much attention and also when there is less traffic. I live in bangalore and head on Sundays primarily
The last cbr Tadao Baba's design. Still looks good and sharp. This bike is ahead of it's time.
The 954 was a great bike, but it did have quirks. The heat off the frame was absolutely INTENSE. When pushed near it's power limit, the front did get twitchy. There was a safety recall issued on the 954 to change the bearings, which helped stabilize it. That said, being twitchy is what also made the bike dive into corners like a 600. It responded to all input because it was twitchy. So that was a good, and a bad thing.
Still loved mine.
The headlights are one of my favorite things about it. Central low beam/running, with the two massive side high beams. Beam pattern was excellent, and just had a beautiful balanced appearance.

Been riding my f4i for a year now and I can not get over how great these early 2000 honda bikes are styled. The 954 is definitely my next purchase. I literally dont want any other bike lol
Right dude I have a silver 01 F4i and I think they look better than the newer models. I am looking to get a 954 I think next. For the money its amazing the value you get with the older one.
My '01 F4i agrees with you! People ask me all the time about if my bike is a '13 or so. Their jaws hit the floor when i tell them it's nearly 20 years old lol.

I have an ‘03 954 and while I don’t imagine ever getting tired of it, I’d like to have an F4i as a stable mate for it.
I have been on multiple fireblades, not only that but 600rr, f4i, multiple 636s (newer and older), zx6rr (600), Ninja 1000, Gsxr 750, (mulitple) S1000RRs, 954s (obviously), R6s, R1s, and even more I'm forgetting...
I come back to the 954 every time, this video is SPOT on!

This makes me all kinds of excited knowing I have a pristine 24k mile White and Blue 954 in my garage! Just got to get her back out on the road after 9 months and I'll be grinning ear to ear. My first Fireblade and certainly not my last.
Agree with your comments; I've been riding for at least 35 years and have had all sorts of bikes (mainly sports) and I would describe my 2003 Blade as the Nirvana of bikes, it feels almost perfect due to its lightness and balance. I've improved it by re-springing the front forks, which are too soft as standard, also had the rear shock re-built and re-valved, added a Power Commander and race can, plus a steering damper, ready to take it on track as soon as this lockdown is over.
I have a 2002 954rr and a same year vfr800. I love them both. My goodness. The vfr is super capable and comfortable. My riding buddy has a z900 and I never have trouble keeping up on the viffer, but the 954 is another beast. Every time I crack the throttle on the 954 and the front lifts, I'm aware I'm on a legend.

I owned 600nrds, 1000'ns ,but the one that remains in my mind it is a 929 that I hade it for 7 years, and was trubble free, not even one fail,and the rest of the characteristics, are exactly as you described the 954. Really amazing bikes !!!
Bought my 954 last week and I’m waiting for the call to pick it up from the dealership, I can’t wait!

I want to tell HeroRR how much I owe you for letting me discover this work of art video. I got one because of you. It's hard to get one in perfect condition in my country but nevertheless I got an 03 CBR954 900RR3 with NH-1, NH1B colour code similar to yours. Just rode it twice with 320km travelled I can say its one hell of a beast at its own. Thanks for blessing me a marvelous engineering piece of art. Planning to beauty her up piece by piece and make memories with my new baby!

Man I wish they would stop trying to “improve” the looks of sport bikes each year or keep trying to keep up with the times. Sport bikes looked the best from around 2003-2008. And yeah about the trunk my 03 r6 has a huge trunk as well. Big enough to fit a couple water bottles or even a wind breaker and my tools. Wish they would go back to simple times of cable throttles and bikes that you had to respect rather than dumbing they down with so many electronics that you’re basically riding a computer
My K1 1000 has a large boot, and I wouldn't change her for anything.

@@badgerman23 yeah because all those little electronics work well, until they break, put some of these new riders on a old bike, you see the skill set straight away, they rely way too much on electronics, no thanks, I prefer the older generation, that any mechanical mind person can read up on and work on with basic tools and skills without relying heavily on computers to set up the bike or fix a simple problem.
No they'd be riding motorcycles without electronics and abs, actually learning how to ride a motorcycle without all those riding aids, most real riders, want the ability to turn abs off because it's a pain in the arse. And if you can't pull away without anti wheelie, then you really do need to learn some riding craft
Lol we'll agree to disagree, I was brought up on bikes from the 80s and 90s, I have abs on street triple and hate it on the road, my first big bike was a 954 and loved it, and I'd have a brand new one over any modern bike, easy to work on yourself without having to take it to the garage, and big enough that you weren't squashed on it like the new fireblade and every other superbike that's been released in the last 8 years
the first Sport Bike I rode was the 954, my buddy got his M1 License so naturally after riding his bike I got my license and bought a 929RR. The 929 and 954 are very similar but different bikes when you ride them, the 954 is lighter and more powerful not by much on paper, but it made a big difference. These 900's are awesome. HeroRR if you plan on keeping the bike get some sort of crash cage for the left side of the bike, the engine case sticks out and will crack on a low speed drop, even with long frame sliders.

I have had a lot of bikes. I will have to agree...954 is by far my favorite. Only bike I regretted selling and I had to go buy another 1.
I sold one in 2018, as I watched it being ridden away I asked myself why? I missed it so much that I bought another in 2019 in that gorgeous red. Superb Motorbike.
My first racing bike is a 954 RR. Absolutely love it. It along with my Harley Davidson V Rod are my stress relief tools.
I had an 02 954RR with the Red and Black color scheme. Best bike I've ever rode. A must on the bike was the Ohlins Steering Dampener. The short wheel base and blunt power could get you tank slapping on hard high speed acceleration. After the steering dampener that bike handled like it was on rails. The other benefit was the lightness of a 600/750 with the low end torque of a 1000. You never had to downshift to get instant power if you didn't want to. Amazing bike
Great video, thank you. I have a 2003 954 with 11k miles. Just waiting for winter to pass by in UK, so I can enjoy it again. I had a 1995 Urban Tiger for 5 years and I rode it throughout our winters and loved it. It seemed either lighter, or smaller than the 954. (or perhaps I am getting older !!). The only other bikes I found to be equally enjoyable were two Blackbirds, a 1997 and a 2005.
I'm a proud 954 owner as it's my first bike. It's such an animal i dont think i can ever get bored and sell it.

I am looking at a beautiful blue 2003 954 with 38,000 miles. The owner is asking $3,200 for it. But the bike looks immaculate.
@@Kryptik33 of course. I paid $3300 for it. 2003, 21k miles. Good condition. I'm located in New England so the price may fluctuate with location. In this case yours seems a bit expensive but if everything feels great on the test ride then it might be a good buy.

The 954 was the pinnacle, I’m on my second one. First was the white/blue 2002, sold it three years ago and always missed it so bought a 2003 blue/black one yesterday. Jumped on and immediately felt at home. So easy to ride fast, so light and you can throw them into corners. I had 2x 2006 cbr 1000rr and 1x 2009 repsol cbr 1000rr and although the power of the 2009 was great it just didn’t have the same handling of the 954. The 2006 model was too boring and predictable. The 954 is just a really good bike and it doesn’t look out of place standing next to the newer litre bikes. Great bike.

I hate the fact that I now "need" a 954. I have always wanted a 2001 CBR600F4i in my stable. But, now after lots of researching and now your video. I believe I'm going to be making the right decision and getting the bigger cc bike.
Got the F4i first, then 954rr
F4i is more reliable and much more stable in corners plus parts are more available

I had the 929 for a number of years and I had to pick up the 954 for a friend. The difference was noticeable even though there aren't huge changes between the two. The 954 was certainly a pleasure to ride. Excellent bike

Come back to this video 3 years after my original comment and it's funny what is said at the end of the video. The 954 is now a very desirable bike and is very difficult to find at the prices they were a few years back. I'm actually hoping to purchase one, can't find them less than £3,500 even with 40k on the clock. Just goes to show how amazing these still are!
I’ve owned my 954 for just over 10years now. It’s def one of, if not the best looking bike I’ve ever seen. Maybe only second to an MV Augusta F4, which is way out of my price range.

Awesome review as always. However, the original Fireblade must be at the top of the list. It was sooo ground breaking! I had basically a brand new GSXR-750 at the time when the Fireblade 900 came out. A mate purchased one. We were side by side and about to overtake a bus and the Blade pulled away from me even though I went down two gears to keep up with it. He was still in top gear! Needless to say my next bike was a brand new Blade. Just wish I kept it. The younger riders of today just don’t realise how easy they have it with all the electronics!
Honda really makes the most bulletproof bikes, and they still don't have to sacrifice comfort and fun to achieve that. Soichiro Honda really set the bar for motorcycles as a whole!
So true man, the 954 was the bike for me the moment I throttled out from 1st to 2nd gear. My bike is still running strong with 80362 original miles nothing changed. I bought it at 11360 miles. I doubt anything was changed besides oil changes.

I'm at almost 50k, nothing but oil changes and tires... and I've rebuilt the forks a couple times...

I actually feel more comfortable & confident on the 954.
I use my bike every day to work and back and recently did a 1400km trip on it... and did not battle, which says a lot for someone that is 6'2
It is an amazing bike and can most definitely hold its own for such an"old" bike.

@@andrestrydom292 Yes, as long as I have the storage to put my bikes I will never sell the NC23, IF I would sell it, it needs to go to someone who realises the gem and takes proper care of it. I put to much hours fixing polishing etc. into it hehe. Drive safe.
Had a ‘99 VTR for a while and I loved it. The sound of the gear driven cam was sublime.
I agree with HeroRR, I've owned many many different motorcycles.... 2strokes / 4 strokes... singles, twins, triples, 4 bangers but this is one of my favorite bikes to ride. Plenty of power throughout the powerband, light weight, great brakes/suspension etc.
I brought 2002 Blk/Gry model out from display in my "man cave", ridden it around a bit and it now has 622 miles on it! Yes, only 622 original miles and still has the original tires on it! I guess now I have to do the 600 mile "break in" maintenance!!

I bought my 954 about 6 years ago. Bought one of the cleanest and low mileage ones I could find for about the same price as an averaged priced 1000rr. Just because I liked riding the 954rr more when I compared both of them. The only downside I could when comparing them is the shorter wheelbase on the 954, which makes it easy to accidentally wheely and tank slap out of corners on the throttle. A steering damper solved that for me. I really like the possibility of storing my chain lock in the luggage compartment in stead of in my backpack when I'm planning on parking it in a more sketchy area. The downside is that it is a bit low on power, but when I ported my cylinder head that already increased by 9 horsepower on the rear wheel and torque also increased over the whole range.
In the Unlimited Speed Cup (aka 200mph+ cup) the Eiron Racing used the 954 as a basis for the naturally aspirated bikes that won it areound 2003/2004 - there is much potential within the cases of motor with a knowledgable Honda tuner & some cash for quality parts.
Freek Jacobs will your 954 wheelie in 3rd? Mine won’t I’m not sure if it’s me or the bike... I can blow the back tire off jumping off the clutch in third but never has it pulled the wheel up enough to ride a wheelie... just wondering
Bought one of these babies(03) brand new in 04. Still have it. Though I haven't touched it in a few years (I think the thrill is finally gone). My first bike was a Yamaha YZF 600. different guys in my crew had different bikes, and I tried them all from ZX10, Gixxa1000s, R1s, to Bussas. Nothing compared to my 954. The handling on that bike is superb.
I own two of these babies now. I really love how it just does what I think.
I bought one brand new in 2003 (a blue model) and it's the best ride I've ever had. More than enough power for the street, easy to ride, comfortable and well balanced, and high quality engineering. A great all-rounder sportsbike for the real world.

I could've bought some modern superbike, but ever since I took a ride on a 94-95 Fireblade, I knew this one (1996) was what I was going to get, no matter what anyone said.
And once I had it...that deeep exhaust sound when it starts, that unassisted riding experience, the rolling thunder sound of decel pop it produces...I just love it.
As an owner of a UK spec 918 FireBlade with less than 3,500 miles, I approve this video!

Love mine, did a similar thing and picked mine up for 900 bucks and rode it around for a few months. Sadly it was taken without permission and the gearbox was blown up, but a couple of slow months and she lives again. Fantastic bike, I hope to clean it up and put fairings back on it at some stage

my brother had one a few years back and it feels more beastly than the 08 1000RR that I have now. at the time I had a CBR600 F4i and was shocked at how close in weight they were.
Its like the 600 f 1998 cbr. When riding this bike the feeling is like it's been designed specifically for you. Its amazing.
The way you describe the 954 is exactly how I would describe my '06 CBR1000-RR. I was looking to get a 954, but they were hard to find and I ended up buying my '06, seven years ago. The '06 fits me to a T and makes me feel like I am part of the machine, it's light and very quick. It's even comfortable for me on long rides.

Agreed!!! I loved my 929 it was the perfect bike. Sold my Wrangler & rode that bike for 10 years everywhere I needed to go. From the grocery store to the Mts Va from Sc only stopping for gas. Many many times. Video was on point. Since then I’ve owned two more CBRs 1000s an 07 & 2012. In my opinion they’re just not the same. Great vid 👍🏼
I just got one yesterday, have had lots of bikes last one was busa, this 954rr would run it down all day. I love this bike so much. Also frame has been fully polished it looks sick.
I rode my brother's 954, I was shocked, comfortable, grunty engine, and the handling was superb.
Felt like my bum was 2-3 inches lower, and my hands 2 inches up and 3 inches back compared to a modern superbike, but still handled better.
My first bike was a 929...I fell in love with it but I do like the 954 too I just couldn't find one at the time and got the 929..I went through 2 of them and I preferred them over my friends bikes.. they were just so much fun to ride.

Hi! May I ask how many liters/km does it cosume on average? And is there any known issues with this exact model? I'm getting a 954rr next month and I'm trying to know as much as possible about it. I'd appreciate your answer. Thank you.

The 954, I have is my angel and no other bike will do. i am happy enough to keep running around on my blade forever. Ye that`s how much I like my bike. I look after it and it looks after me.
As for possible faults? I replaced the rectifier on several occasions (All okay at first ) as it would either start giving out to much voltage or not enough. So I fixed this by re-positioning it to an area with better air flow. Never replaced it since. Passed.
DIY: Maintenance:
Change oil/filter every year without fail.
All I can say is the bike you are thinking about purchasing is most likely been looked after and had regular oil changes.

I'm looking at a 954rr with 70k kms (around 43k miles) on it and it looks to be in a very good shape. I will hopefully be getting it by next month. I will br sure to inform you if I did :)

Everything you said about the 954 is how I describe my (former) RC-51. It was just an incredible bike that does not have a replacement. I've had my CBR1100xx for 5 years now and will only replace it with a new version from Honda. My wife has a new CB1000R and it is frightening how sensitive and challenging it is to ride, even for someone as experienced as myself.
I recently purchased a 2003 Honda Blackbird XX - I thought the first time I got on it that I made a huge mistake (literally - 600 pounds wet!). But when I got on a straight, empty road with new pavement, I realized the machine is a masterpiece. Incredible engineering. But I've noticed it's imperative to have the right tires with the right PSI on the BB - without 'em, you have a crocodile on your hands....

Had an 02 954 was such a good all round road bike with a few track days too. I'm no expert rider though.
Upgraded to the 08 blade was disappointed.

Biggest difference is that the current 1000's are "race replicas" literally, whereas this bike was a liter bike made for the streets...purpose built to be awesome on the street...

After 03, bikes went full on motoGP evolution ...better for track, not as good for the road.

My CBR919RR is the pinnacle of Honda’s carbureted technology. My motorcycle is all analog and fast AF. It also happens to be the 90’s version of your color scheme, HeroRR ;)
I was planning to buy a 954 for my last bike, but ended up with an 05 Fireblade instead. Found on in showroom condition. I think it's the upgraded design on the 2005 1000RR that did it for me. Never regreted. It's simply beautifull, and the little extra tourqe is a nice bonus for every day riding.
954 is awesome for sure. They were great from 900 to 1000 you just can’t go wrong.
All Japanese sportbikes from that era were awesome in their own way. From a time when the manufacturers did not need to bother with catalytic converters, ABS systems and noise management. All bikes were easily 5 - 10 kg lighter than the following generations and felt much more refined and pure. And it makes them easier to work on and more reliable. I am still on the lookout for a 954 RR. Was trying to get one last year but could not afford one, so I went for a GSX-R600 k1, which was a lot of fun for that little money, cant wait for the snow to melt, so I can ride it again.
European magazines I have read also praise the 954 for many of the reasons you mention. They think the 954 still has the ethos of the original 900RR, and the 1000, although fast and a good bike, does not ride like a fireblade.
I found the 2017+ 1000rr to do an excellent job of putting 600 weight and size back into the Fireblade. This is after owning 2000, 2003, 2008 blades with combines mileage of about 50,000 miles. After riding my brothers 2003 back to back with my 2017, there is no comparison. The 2003 feels antiquated in every way except it looks really good at a distance.

I'm gonna throw my two cents in here! I agree with everything you say. I've had a couple of experienced riders say that this is the best Fireblade they ever made. I've had two 929's and an 06 and 07 Fireblade. As well as an BMtroubleU S1000R and a 06 ZedX10R, or ZeeX10R as you guys call 'em in the states, and a 2010 Ducati 1198S. From light to light the S1000R needed everything to keep up with the 929. Considering there's a 60 odd horse power difference, that says a lot about the bike. I sold the duke and bought the used 07 Fireblade. Immediately it felt longer, heavier and "where did the power go"? Ok I'm getting of a large displacement Vtwin onto an inline four, fair cop. But the 06/07 blades were known for their midrange power so this is testament to the duke I guess, but I digress! The 929, "and I can only guess cause stock the 954 is two kilios lighter", feels closer to the Ducati in compactness, lack of weight, weight centralisation, power delivery, flickability. The S1000R was no more fun to ride than the 929, and the 06/07 Fireblades were leaving wanting more despite tarting them up with all the go fast bits. (Full exhaust, power commander, 42/15 sprocket kit, K&N air filter, dynotuned etc). U am actively hunting an 05 ZX10R as these also were 170KG when they came out but had 175 BHP which is phenomenal not to mention the fact that they have the dimensions of a 600 as I have had a short ride on one. I'm sold! But if I can't get one then the other choice is a 954 if I can get one in schmick condition. Shorter, lighter, flckable beats outright horsepower anyday!

My S1000R is little clinical. I may have to go back to a fireblade.
@@EEEBA1 the 08 fire blade is a more tame bike than the 04-05 zx10r. However I also believe the 08 cbr is better than the 954. It's probably 10% less road friendly but it's a better overall package. Also look at k5/6 gsxrs.

hahahah just started my 2003 954RR after 3 years sitting.. started RIGHT up. going to put a license on it tomorrow.. This bike was my dream bike when I bought it.. it is my 4th.. and best ever. Love it.

In 2005 I put a 954 engine in my Quad. I beat on that motor for 10years shredding dunes . And never had one issue. Always started right up. And had me grinning ear to ear every time I road my quad. Best conversion I ever did. My friend did conversion with R1. And I would out run him every time.
