Also changing the color of carpet requires spending thousands of dollars on new carpet. People get very upset about money being spent in ways in ways they don't agree with.

for me, the best nugget of this was "you're not a consultant". it can be so easy to go into a new church and think you have all the answers but I've recently learned the value of honour and appreciating the particular context and setup of a new church over changing everything to fit your vision. even for those with leadership roles, doing church is a team activity and vision should be collaborative. I started a new church for the first time last year and it really revealed to me how much of my vision was more about my ego than serving the community.

This Easter I’m playing my last service at my church of almost 19 years (and 7 years on the praise team)...because I’m getting married in October. It’s going to be a bittersweet moment for me.

    Very timely!
I was just out for coffee this evening with a seasoned elder from my new church who used to be a sound tech (that's my particular gifting and an area I really enjoy serving). Right now I'm working through the process of getting to know people (your number one tip).
This elder had similar ideas to yours, but in no particular order:
    1. Get to know the current practices and the reasons for them. If needed, elevate or adjust some practices on your own time for improvement. Mix as best you know how when it's your turn to run the console.
    2. Don't create a mix that you personally like to hear. A dance club version of "Kumbaya, My Lord" likely won't go over well.
    3. Most others are not as passionate about audio as you. Don't push your knowledge and experience and expect others to follow.
    4. Keep learning even when not serving yet.
    5. Re-purpose the carpet for sound absorption panels to save money. (nah, that's a freebie ;) ;) )

Wow this was so helpful thanks so much. I just started going to a new church and the first Sunday I went there through conversation word got out that I was a worship leader at my old church. Before you know it at the end of the service the Pastor came up to me to ask me to lead worship the next Sunday. I was taking back because they have a worship leader. She had been gone for about 6 months due to having a baby and her first week back was the Sunday that I came. Long story short the Pastor complained to me how she's not committed to doing worship every week and how she doesn't practice or communicate with him. So I lead worship the next Sunday and things went well I could really feel God moving in the church and people enjoyed the worship. Then I get a call from the Pastor that he wants to make me full time worship leader. Once again I'm taking back not only because she was the worship leader but because she also has family on the board and her husband is the assistant pastor. I mean I've only been at this church for 2 weeks. So I told the Pastor that I don't mind leading every other week. I don't think that's what he wants but I feel uncomfortable just jumping in the full time position just like that. What do you think Brian I would really appreciate your opinion

Idk how to say this...its abit sad see your go to CZcams worship song "mentor" "teacher" slowly age over the years 👴🏻 and get chubbier 🤭 but i really gotta thank you man i never thought i would play at church i started because the church i attend was a pretty small church with not much people who has a musical background when i started i had 0 guitar background i mainly played wind instruments before but due to my fren the guitarist in youth leaving town for college i had to step up, pick up guitar and learn as quick as possible currently im still playing in the youth worship you really motivated me to keep practicing harder and push for service worship 💪 THANK YOU my friend/teacher 🤣

Thank you for doing this! I was hired 2 months ago and have been observing, no changes or new songs. It's good to be assured that was a right move.
When would you say you start step 3? I know some might have a hard answer like "exactly 6 months" or another way to answer might be "when you're comfortable enough to have your worship team over for dinner" so what's your take?

Think about making changes in a new church in the same way that you changes within your team that already trusts you. Communicate, cast vision, take feedback, pray and think about how it affects others around you, not just yourself.
