That fence, with the 'bars on top', back in that corner, was the motorpool where I worked when I was there, 1981-1983, when I was with the 42nd Engineers BBDE, back then😊I honestly love and miss the place.
Wow, great memories. I was stationed in Berlin from February 1984-February 1987 with A Co. US Army Field Station Berlin. I've walked through those front gates many times after a night at Al Mulino's, The Speakeasy, Tony's imbiss stand or the Turkish Doner Kebab restaurant on the corner next to A Mulino's. I PCS'd to Filed Station Kunia after my tour on Berlin but I always consider Berlin my favorite duty station.
I was in the Air Force stationed at RAF Chicksands and I went TDY to Field Station Berlin for a month and they gave me a room at Andrews Kaserne. Thank you, this brings back memories.
I was stationed at Andrews from 1-1-70- to 3-6-72 with Co B, USASA FS Berlin. I moved out onto the economy at 39 Drakestrasse with a couple of my fellow spooks. ASA was a law unto itself, more or less, but getting out of the barrack cut the Mickey Mouse to almost zero. I worked out in Rudow, so our guys didn't get involved with most of the troops from T'berg - two very different worlds. I've never been back to Berlin for the reason that most of the places I was familiar with or worked at are completely gone. It was a good time in my life, since I got to see a bit of Europe and met some of the best people I've had the pleasure to know. I'm still in touch with some of them to this day. Thanks for these videos, which bring back some memories of the "good old days."
I was stationed on Andrew Kaserne 1992- 1996. Yes I remember the Doner Kebab stand & the delicious Italian restaurant right across the strasse. 😂. Had lots of friends on McNair & taking the Uban to party downtown on Kaiser Platz. I like all the old Uban stations turned clubs & the Eierschale. Yes. Good times. Great times.
Thank you for sharing this. I was stationed in Berlin during the time you were there. I lived in the hospital barracks but have many fond memories of The Friendship & The Speak Easy. I also used to come to Andrew's to practice for the female volleyball team. And I loved swimming in the pool there. I even used the tanning beds that were in the locker room. So many great memories of Berlin as a whole. When I came back from Desert Shield/Storm the East & West Loop busses no longer ran twice an hour. And everything had drastically changed. I am looking forward to going back to Berlin someday soon.
Enjoyed traveling down Memory Lane with you. I was a German 98G there in Berlin between 1977 and 1979, working at T-Berg and living off post near Grunewald. I’m glad that you too have fond memories of your military service in Berlin.
I also went in and out the main gate at Andrews. The years were 1974 and 1975. I worked in the big brick building facing front where the SS troops had been. It was the USO club on the bottom floor right side facing the parade field (parking lot). It was wide open at the time. No guard shack blocking the view. My friends got married in the chapel on Andrews. There was a movie theatre behind the main brick building. The swimming pool from 1936 was there to the right of the entrance. Outside the entrance was the best curry wurst stand ever. Fries too with mayonnaise. My husband was in H&S company. His barracks was the white (tan) building that is no longer there. There was also a baseball field behind the barracks. I’m sure things were different between 1974 and 1991. We had to deal with the Wall, getting flag orders to go anywhere outside West Berlin. We took the duty train overnight several times to West Germany and drove it once. The PX and commissary were downtown across from BB on Clayallee if my memory is right. We rode the U-baun. S ban would go into East Berlin. I did take a tour to East Berlin through Checkpoint Charlie one time. Thank you for the video. It brought back many memories.

Andrews Barracks has changed drastically. I was with the Support Battalion for Berlin Brigade 1-34th Infantry in 1965. I remember a Arms repair depot and a projectionist school there.
And oh yeah, I had some good times up them stairs at the Speak Easy back then too. AND the Home Bar, AND Al Mulinos pizza place. The Home Bar was actually right next to that Turkish imbiss stand back then

A fellow MP here. I was there from Jun74 to Jan77 and have so many fond memories of that time. That Imbiss stand was visitied many times. Our go to bars were The Speakeasy and What Cheer. Goody(former 287th) and Shelagh owned the Speakeasy and Shelagh's brothers owned What Cheer. That whole Kaserne had so many neat features. We had an awesome Bicentennial party over in the grassy area behind the tennis dome and the Provost Marshall's building. Good times for sure!

I served in Berlin and Mannheim. I remember putting up the flags. A couple of times we put the German flag upside down. Black band goes on top, not the yellow. The swimming and diving events during the 1936 Olympics were held in a building on the Andrews site. I took down the American flag at a ceremony at Berlin Brigade Headquarters, along with French and English troops. General Shachnow (November 23, 1934 - September 27, 2018) gave a very short speech. I remember it was a Friday afternoon. The general mentioned he wanted to keep things brief and wished us all a nice weekend. Schone Wochenende.I got a coin for that.
Does anybody remember a sergeant named Philip Hall? He was based at McNair from appr. 1986 until just after the wall came down in 1989. He was just a few years later than I and we became friends (visiting East Berlin in 1989 several times before the Wall came down). I lost contact with him after he returned to the US, left the army and went to college.
I was stationed at Andrews in 1969 - 105 self-propelled Howitzer Artillery battery. Then we were moved to McNair barracks which were the former SS barracks the Germans occupied in WWII. My next stop was Vietnam, 1970-71 - Quad 50s machine guns. I did and saw a lot in two years.
McNair was the factory of the Telefunken electronics company until it got confiscated by the US Army. Andrews was the SS Barracks. Roosevelt barracks was the old barracks of my great-grandfather, who served there with the Prussian Gardeschützen Regiment prior to WW1. I cycled past it every day to high school.
We really did! Berlin was the best military assignment I ever had! And we could travel all around the city on the buses, S-Bahns, and U-Bahns for free by showing our military ID cards.
As a teenager I used to live about 500 m down the road leading directly to the main gate (Kadettenweg). Halfway to our home there used to be a bar /brothel named "Nashville Saloon". Apparently their phone number was very similar to our's and we often received calls from drunk American soldiers, who wanted to speak to one or another of the prostitutes. My mother was first annoyed, but then decided to prank the GIs by pretending to be the Madame..
I was stationed there 18 months 1982 HQ Co.worked FSB MPs.German labor service Guards worked the gate then.We had one at teflesburg he had been a Hitler youth and got captured.said the Americans treated him well and gave him cigarettes
Those two "towers" you mention have concrete soldiers encased in them. They were not square originally. If you chipped off the new cement the soldiers would emerge.
I was stationed at Hahn AB 1988-1990. I never went to Berlin but saw some of West Germany. I always wondered what it was like in Berlin during those days.
I was stationed at Hahn AB 1983-1985. Assigned to the 6911 ESS and worked at Metro Tango about 8 miles north of the base on the Hunsrückhöhenstraße (B-327) just north of the village of Kappel. I wanted to go back and visit while I was stationed in Berlin, but never got that far. Now Hahn has changed so much, I doubt I would even recognize it. I haven't been there in 37 years!
@@tpartain Hi, that's really interesting you were at the same base at Hahn. I'm pretty sure they tore-down the old base though. You can check on utube or google etc. It sounds like you had a lot of interesting experiences. But I was at Hahn from 1988-1990. I enlisted in 1986 so my 4 years were up at that time. So i left the service (honorable discharge) and went home to the States to go to college. I had no idea (of course) a new war was going to start about 6 months after i got out though. They sent me a letter to report to some base and gave me about 3 weeks or so to get ready. But the war was over so fast they sent me another letter saying to disregard the first letter. I was a POL jet refueler at Hahn. It was a fun time and I really enjoyed it. But in 1990 it seemed like the old world was going away...the Wall was going to come down etc...so it was time for me to move on. I had visited Paris, Frankfurt, Koblenz, a castle, and some winefests..oh and a trip to Dachua (pretty creepy). Anyways, I always wanted to visit Berlin but i never got the chance. Well, just before I was to return home they did have a bus trip to Berlin for one day. But the Wall was basically down by then...so I wasn't able to see it the way it was. I was ready to ship back home by then in any case so I left. You had a good chance to see history and live right where it was happening. That was an excellent opportunity. For me it wasn't meant to be....but I'm happy for my time at Hahn. It was a good time in my life. West Germany was a nice place. Maybe someday I'll go visit Berlin.
Today my employer has his HQ at former Hahn AB. Our hangars stand where the quick reaction flight with the nuclear weapons was parked (50th Tactical Fighter Wing, IIRC). The pilot's ready room building today houses our QA and our training department. I live about 20 km away from Hahn.

It was a fun time back then and I was mostly glad to be there. Sometimes the Sergeants could be a pain you know...but that's how it goes I guess. I had a friend who had an apartment off base in Peterswald...and I went to visit him a few times. I also went to some winefests...which were fun...and sometimes we would hang-out in the Moselle towns. It was a very beautiful area. @@jankrusat2150
Yes. There 69-72. Before "What Cheer" it was called "Kramer's" - then name change after Heidi & her male friend were running it. Of the 2 places within a couple blocks (the other being Frank's Pig Pen) it was the nicest, good ambience and good pizza. Thanks to the contributor for sharing this. At about 17:00 in the video you're standing right outside the pedestrian gate & there was always a little Imbiss in a trailer there with currywurst, pommes frites, etc. Great stuff & priced right. Cold-war "county fair" food.
Was Al Mulinos gone when you were there? It was run by Italians and closer to the main gate. It was on the same block as the Speakeasy, I think. Thanks for my own tour down memory lane (‘82-‘84).
Yes, Al Mulino’s was there. I loved their Spaghetti Carbonara! It was in between the Imbiss on the corner and the Speakeasy on the same side of the street. I think I have a video inside, but haven’t uploaded it to CZcams yet.
