I don’t know about mormonism but
The Bible emphasizes the equality of all humans, regardless of race or skin color. For instance, Galatians 3:28 states, "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." This underscores the biblical teaching that all people are equal in the eyes of God.

I understand you want to make it all sound reasonable to a modern audience, but there is an overwhelming deluge of evidence that yes it did indeed mean black skin. The whole book was designed to justify the ransacking of the 'Lamanites' (aka the Native Americans) land and culture by labelling them as wicked. If you would like I can provide many more quotes but I think this one says it all. It's from 'Children of Promise' an LDS-made kids cartoon from 1980, and I'd love you to explain how little kids are meant to interpret this... ‘Look what heavenly father has done, see my skin, isn’t it pretty and white. Blackness is a metaphor for sin, like saying: a "dark soul." It has nothing to do with actual skin color as throughout the book of Alma, the Nephites and Lamanites were only distinguished by a red mark of paint on the chin, or forehead, of the Lamanites. Nephites and Lamanites were all Native Americans with slightly darker skin.

If you are referring to Matthew 15, biblical scholars agree that Jesus did not focus his ministry on people outside of the Judaism, who were considered the only members of the covenant community. However, after sincere demonstrations of faith, Jesus does bless this Canaanite woman’s daughter. For another example of Jesus blessing someone outside of the Jewish community because of their faith, see Matthew 8:5-13. These stories have nothing to do with skin color, but being a member of the Jewish covenant community and both stories are ultimately a message about faith. Peter and the apostles would later be called to preach Jesus Christ to all people, regardless any classification (Acts 10).

If you are referring to the Book of Mormon, the text does not say that skin color is a curse. The Lamanites are cursed because of their disobedience and rebellion against God. The curse is described in 2 Nephi 5:20-21 as being “cut off from the presence of the Lord.” As a sign of this, “the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them." Most scholars agree that the skin color was given as a sign of being cut off from the presence of the Lord so that the Nephites would know not to intermarry with anyone who was not keeping the commandments of God. This is similar to a prohibition in the Old Testament when the Israelites were forbidden to marry the Canaanites in Deuteronomy 7:3-4. The Book of Mormon also states that God welcomes all who repent of their sins “black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile.” (2 Nephi 26:33) Thanks for watching!
