Local man shares how Flight 255 crash still impacts him, his family 35 years later

On August 16, 1987, Northwest flight 255 crashed moments after takeoff onto Middlebelt Road. Every year on this date, family members gather in Romulus to remember the lives lost instantly.

I lived on the south side of the airport. Watched the smoke and glow from my bedroom window. I knew it wasn't tires burning this time. Such an awful feeling knowing so many weren't likely to survive that. When news saidCecilia lived I remember being so happy and sad for her all at once. So glad she's doing well❤️

I saw it when I was 13 grew up next to Metro airport and was cruising up Wick Rd. On my Honda Spree when it happened, saw the crash site and didn't understand what happened. I was there before most emergency crew and was quickly made to leave once more officials got there.

Damn. 36 years ago. My family lived down the street from the Murdy’s. My family didn’t know them personally but I remember always wanting to tell them how sorry I was but I never wanted to bother them. I can’t even imagine their pain.

My mothers anniversary of her death i was at the cemetery and later on that day this happened and i always remembered this day prayers for the family who lost love ones so sad
