-30C Extreme Cold Cabin Overnight

- I went to my off grid cabin despite the extreme cold weather.Hakf the chore is getting out there. Everything is more difficult and exhausting in these frigid conditions. I only have a few free days to visit my cabin before I go back to work and we just happen to be in a cold snap. I brought the last of my supplies on a Homemade sled and began to cut firewood. In these extreme conditions firewood is a must. I made a few improvements to my cabin such as hanging curtains over the door to keep the draft out. I also cooked a delicious dinner, played free cell, read my book and smoked a pipe with a whiskey drink. I always feed my chickadee friends and leave a bit of leftovers for the rest of the forest creatures.

They have some small saws 6/8 inch Amazon. Came with 2 little charges. They work good and the charge stays pretty darn good. Just not sure with that freezing cold. 🥶 I have 26 dwarf bottlebrush with shears it could take 20 + minutes each to prune. With the little saw 5 minutes each at the most. Just thought I run it past you. Of course, you sawing branches warms you up good.
@@Lalunabreeze Thanks! Yes I have thought about an 8" cordless chainsaw. Maybe one day when I can afford it. The battery might not last long in the cold possibly 🙂
Tip: a metal pail filled with rocks set on your stove can be a great source of continued heat long after the fire goes out , on cold nights can be placed under the bed to warm it .. ( heat outside the first few times as heated rocks can explode do not use river or creek rocks )
Thanks Bill! There are only creek rocks around and usually frozen or buried in the snow. Having "extreme " in the title helps attract more views. I know several people from northern Ontario and it sounds like a rough place but they are tough folk.
Thanks for watching 🙏👍💛✌
@@Thelonelyscavenger you can use the creek rocks inside eventually course gravels can also be used something to plan for over warmer months .. I would use them around an outdoor fire a fair number of times before utilizing for indoors. I like the tip mentioned about utilizing old fire hose as weather strips 👍
Keep up the good work and enjoy your outdoors .. 👍
Hey bud , not one to dive into your business , noticed you bearing down on your bow saw , a no-no from experience . Saw one handed and let the weight move your saw down the log . Putting weight on your saw will not only dull it quicker but will also warp your saw blade rendering it pretty much useless . Grew up using a bow saw to saw all our wood ( up to 8 cords a winter ) and if we were careful we could cut 2 cords of wood per saw blade . Just saying ....
I have no problem taking advice from someone who has experience like yourself. Normally I don't push down on a saw that hard, I guess I was getting cold. Thank you for your feedback 🍻👍💛✌🙏

Whenever I'd complain about the cold my Pop would tell me that the heat is in the work, and he'd send me out to cut and split wood. Cut enough wood until you think you have enough and then cut as much as you did the first go around. Then keep quiet about being cold again. Ha, Ha, Ha. Thanks for bringing back fond memories from my good old days.
Thank you for sharing your story Freddie! I really enjoyed hearing it.🙂👍🍻🙏✌💛
Sounds like something my dad would have said. Can't feel your hands and feet? You're not working hard enough! Go build up some warmth.
I don't enjoy camping enough to get out in-30 I did enough of that on the farm and working construction 57 years I don't consider it fun now
I find these type of videos so cozy and comforting ☺️
Awww thanks Cecilia that is so sweet 🙂✌🙏🍻
Not me. I'll do my camping on Miami Beach thank you.
@@trainmaster0217 I’l wish, but I’m too far away for that, over here on the chilly east coast of Canada 🥶
After watching these videos for a long time, I actually feel as if I'm really THERE!! 🥰
The picture for Mom was the perfect touch. How sweet
Thank you very much. Sadly my mom passed away on the morning of her birthday.
Thank you for inviting us over for supper, Ken. It looks a bit cold out to me. Stay safe and stay warm
Thanks Sean. Its been quite cold lately 💛🙏
So relaxing to watch. Lovely cabin life
Thank you💛🙏👍✌
BRRRR! A guy has to really love his cabin and nature to be out there during those temps.
I would never get to enjoy my cabin if I waited for milder weather. It is very cold here during the winter and tons of mosquitoes during the summer. Thank you for watching, I really appreciate that. 👍🙏💛✌
@@Thelonelyscavenger Im always trying to find a channel here I can enjoy without some woman being in a bikini or the topic is end of the world stuff. Too many will do anything for a view.
Loved the painting for your mom brother.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much Mark. Take care my friend 💛🙏
Thank you for sharing. You have a sweet little place there. Blessed. Beautiful touch of your mother’s painting.
Thank you very much!🙏✌👍💛🙂🍻
The painting you made for your mother is beautiful... she would have loved it I'm sure, you did good. 😊
Thank you very much. I appreciate that 🙏 ✌🍻
Agree
This is one of the most peaceful videos i've ever seen. Keep it up amigo.
Thank you very much 😊 🙏
What a beautiful place 🤩. The peace, solitude, clear skies and clean air, what more could you need to unwind from the stresses, strains and anxieties of everyday life. I am a sociable person but I do like my own company and never feel lonely, this would be an ideal vacation for me. With plenty of wood, hot tea and a good book of course. Best wishes from Northern Ireland.
Cheer Kerry!🍻 Thanks for watching!🙏✌👍💛
Same here. I could easily stay away in that cabin on my own for a while. But you’ve got too enjoy your own company which I do. Probably why I’m a truck driver. Nothing better after a long day settling down too bed in my cab, just me my dog and radio or TV on, chilling🙂
That fire looked so good when you were walking back in the dark. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching Michael. I'm sure burning through that firewood though🙏💛
I never tire of watching your videos. When I watch them, I imagine that I'm there and that is my cabin in the woods :) God Bless. PS - Your Momma would love her painting...
Thanks Mark. I'm glad you enjoy my videos🙏💛
Just as you said.
@@Finlanderfive
Hello fellow Finlander, are you in Finland 🇫🇮 ? I’m in the States.
I would have a dog there with me to keep me company. They are great companions
A husky would be awesome to bring along 🙏👍✌💛🍻🙂
Отличное видео. Настоящий, мужской отдых.
Красивый и суровый лес Канады и Сибирская тайга очень похожи.👍

If you ever want a “Gourmet” beverage to warm you up in the cold.
Brew 1 liter of strong black tea with a cinnamon stick,a couple whole cloves and 2 spoons of honey.
Once it’s brewed add 3 shots of rum(preferably Stroh 80 proof).
I'm going to write that down. It sounds really good, thanks!🍻🍻🍻
That's a splendid day out in the woods! Well, definitely you're to reconstruct the fireplace for a stone or brick one to have long warm sleep
Thanks for watching Michael 🍻💛✌🙏
Thank you for talking to us most of the time
No problem. Thank you for watching my video🙂
Just loved it .Thank you
Thank you for the positive comment 😊 🙏 ✌🍻
The picture you did for your mom having it out there was really nice it's like having her there with you in a way. I totally understand that feeling I got my mom a few things and made her a little something for mother's Day only way to wake up to find out she had past. I think you really like it what I made for my mom I haven't so I can look at it everyday cuz you know a day goes by that you wish you was here.
I'm very sorry to hear about your Mom. That is a really sad story🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for sharing your awesome video.
Thank you for watching Lessi 👍✌🍻💛🙏
I like the weasel house idea. I'll have to do that.
I would love this! My wife, not so much! lol! Great little cabin!!
Thank you very much Matt! I have many more cabin videos to watch. I'm also looking forward to more adventures this winter ✌🙏🍻👍

Wonderful!
Thanks Denise 🙂✌️
You can use old pieces of fire hose on the edges of your door and door frame. It works awesome. And is a great insulator.
Thanks! I like that idea👍💛🙏✌!
Great idea 👍
I like the conversation in the video!
Thanks for watching Charlie 🙂
Down to the earth !
This video was a MASTERPIECE!! The shots, the editing, the imagery, the lighting, the ASMR…. Everything about it was fascinating!! There should be CZcams talent awards in different categories!
Thank you very much Linda 👍🍻✌🙏💛
LOL
Agree, Ken's winter episodes are hard to beat!
Are you watching the same one I'm watching ??
Pass the blunt
Liked the ulu! A bit more genuine than the souvenir ulu my folks brought back from Alaska 25 years ago. My mom still uses it though as it is a very effective knife for dicing chicken and shredding lettuce, etc. Thanks for posting. Love the great outdoors!
Thank you! I made the ulu myself from a skillsaw blade. Hope you enjoyed the video 🙏✌🍻
Awesome little cabin. I have a similar one just at the beginning of my forest, although as a comfortable person i have electricity from the grid up in there and it's very well insulated :D At -30c i could sit comfortably in there at constant 20c all night using oil radiator.
Nice. Sounds very good, thanks for sharing your story 🍻✌🙏👍💛
Living in northern Ontario we don’t consider it extreme until it hits -40 lol
I’ve winter camped under a lean to many times at -25 c it’s just what you’re acclimated and used to … 👍
When my grandparent came to the USA from Finland the 1st thing they built was the sauna.

On gosh,. I've learned the hard way the colder it is, the harder it is to get a fire going.
Oh wow 😮
Thank you for watching 🙂👍🙏
@@Thelonelyscavenger no problem 😊
Wow amazing bro
Thanks for watching ✌🙏🍻
Nice video, but I must say that stove has seen better days ! Time for a new one !
Thanks Charles. I built that stove 11 years ago from a filing cabinet and some metal shelves.
@@Thelonelyscavenger Yeah, I seen it was home made. 11 yrs., I would be looking for another cabinet of the same gage metal, and get a new one built. This time you can do, what you may have wished to do, after you put it in and used it a few times. If there was any !
Great Job...Great Lighting...next time more sound of the Wind and Weather...!

A slice of heaven.
That's for sure. Thanks for watching 🙂✌️
Buy an insulated curtain panel to help keep the air out - looks so peaceful and restful
Thanks Dora👍🍻✌🙏💛
I like your sawbuck idea, but as an improvement, maybe bore out the hole to 1” and replace the bolt with a hardwood dowel. Pin the dowel in place with a screw from the bottom of the center leg,and you will never hit a piece of metal with your sawblade ever.
Thanks Stan! There is always room for improvement 🙏✌👍💛
When using a wood stove I've found that a vent from outside to the stove's draft reduces the amount of cold air sucked in through cracks etc and the room heats evenly.
Thanks again for the advice, I appreciate that. I have a bigger homemade stove now which heats the cabin very well.✌️🙂
A $5 damper in your stove pipe will help warm the cabin quicker, retain heat and conserve wood.
Thanks John. I built a new stove with a homemade damper and it's set up in the cabin

👍🤤 43 celcius in the greenhouse damned I love the cold
This video will hopefully cool you off

Damn !!! Another cooking show .
Some people really enjoy the cooking part. Is there something else you would like to see from these type of videos? Thanks for your feedback Mike! ✌🙏🍻
I like that knife used to cut the onion. Cheers.
Thanks! I made it myself 🍻🙏✌
Hello Ken, great video, I could see your breath showing it was still very cold despite having the stove fire going, i am curious if it ever warm the entire cabin ?

Great 👌😃

I lost my mom too ken, I know how much it still hurts and it always will hurt. But it will become more bearable at times of peace and joy. I pray for you and your loved ones joy, peace, strength, and salvation eternal in Jesus name amen . God bless you.
Thank you very much, I appreciate that 🙏🙏🙂
Hi Ken, let us know if you get an established weasel as a co-resident there, very cool.
Thanks Mike, I will ✌💛🙏🍻👍
I was thinking an established weasel would wear a top hat and tails ..?
I found that keeping a damp rag and cleaning the blade periodically allows the saw to cut easier.
Thanks for the advice. I will try that in milder weather. I normally use transmission fluid✌️
Nice video. One thing- although you had a great fire going in the stove. Most of the heat must be going up the pipe as you could always see you steamy breatb
Sometimes it takes a while to heat up the cabin but usually it can get to be 15-20 degrees Celcius. Thanks for watching David 👍💛🙏✌
Harbor freight has a double 55gallon drum kit for bett heat extraction
Appreciate the video. Best wishes for your surgery. I believe your cabin would feel warmer if your stove wasn’t so high off the floor. This is why it’s so cold when you are sitting on the floor chopping wood. Probably your feet stay very cold.
Thank Kevin! During the day iam in and out of the cabin quite a bit which cools it off. At night when all the work is done its actually quite toasty. 🍻🙏✌🙂👍
Next time you build a sled use old skis for runners, I built one and put a 2ft by 6ft box on it. was very easy to pull.
Thanks James! I like that. It was mostly difficult due to all the dead fall and brush.✌️
Great content, I gotta say you need a Silky saw my friend. They cut through trees like a hot knife through butter
Thanks for the advice. I have a four foot crosscut saw and a chainsaw but can't use it because of my back🙏✌🍻
I love watching your videos.
Watching from Philippines
Thank you very much Resly!💛🙏👍✌
I personally prefer longer slower thrusts but with power behind it if you know what I mean? Feel like that doesn’t absorb energy as much n u can cut for longer time?
Thanks for sharing and watching 💛🍻🙏👍✌
@@Thelonelyscavenger I was just messing around brother I don’t know the first thing about camping but I really love watching
I noticed the smoke coming out the fireplace door, try extending your chimney about 2 feet, 60 cms in height
Thanks for the advice. I think the stovepipe needs a cleaning too
✌🙏💛👍
Cinnamon cloves and orange peel which is dried will keep away mice. I use it in my camper. Put in mesh bags then around the house
Thanks Lydia, I will give that a try 🙂
@@Thelonelyscavenger use cinnamon sticks whole cloves. Works for me
Good video
Thank you Tahira 😊
Loved the video. My question, is why are you wearing a reflective crossover, In addition to the reflective striping on your snowsuit. Is that a requirement in the woods where your camping?
Thank you very much. Good question- I wear extra reflective gear to make sure I'm seen. Hunters or poachers will sometimes shoot at anything big and dark moving through the forest. 🙏👍✌🍻
Silly question but if you split the log's in the cabin would the noise not drive off a weasel if he takes up residence underneath it?
That's a good question. I don't normally split wood inside except when it's really cold. But yes it probably would annoy the weasel. Thanks for the question 🙂✌️
Feeding Jays , chickadee and a raven or two makes the trip. Worst thing with a weasel is the smell like ten cats took a leak .
Thats very true George ✌🙏👍💛
Turn the wood cutting stand around so you don’t hit the bolt with your saw.
How warm does it get inside? Is it somewhat insulated in certain areas such as the floor?
There is no insulation, but the snow banked around the cabin helps keep the cold out. If I keep the door closed it can get about +23 Celcius inside. Thank you so much for watching Bianca 👍💛✌🙏
Saw blade seems very blunt, half the work if sharp my friend 👍🏽
This was only a temporary saw, in the video following I brought my 4 foot one man crosscut saw
Mint keeps mice away too along with raccoons. Plant mint , mint oil , water and spray bottle.
Thanks Wesley! The Mint plant is highly invasive, but I do use toothpaste as a deterrent. I have the cabin sealed up good in my last video
When I was a kid we called that a fort.
It's like a fort but for adults. It's made from free scrap wood so I cant complain. I'm just happy to have a warm place to stay. Thanks for watching 🙂✌️
How long does it take before the cabin gets up to 'normal" temperature?
About a half hour maybe. If I keep the door closed. Thanks for watching 🍻🙂💛👍
You need a out building and in the summer fill it with split firewood.
Thanks Wesley! As soon as the snow melts i will make a tarp shelter for storage and firewood 🍻💛✌🙏
