- Capricorn Records is known as the birthplace of southern rock. The studio, where the Allman Brothers, Joe Cocker, and Lynyrd Skynyrd all recorded, was once forgotten. Now, it's opening its doors again. Dana Jacobson visited the resurrected studio in Macon, Georgia.
That studio is a magical place.
It was a truly magical time. My teen years in Georgia with Soul and Southern Rock, the times of MLK, peaceful protests for Civil Rights and High School. The music was from the heart & soul❣️
There is a field of energy in Macon that makes music happen.
So little has changed in the studio since I worked there with Terry Kane's crew, and the Middleton Brothers Construction Company, in 1972. You just can't get any better than the acoustics of that room.
The Control Room saw some changes over the years, but I recognize much of the original details.
Gonna go back and see the place again soon.
When we were in Macon in September 2015, the building was ready for demolition. And now... just wonderful that it has been rebuilt! Hopefully "Southern Rock" will blossom again with new bands like in the 70s!!!
Excellent story. It's wonderful that Mercer U President Underwood understood the value of the studio and it's legacy to helping develop future musicians and worked to preserve it.
