This is one of the most heartbreaking and real portraits of suicide I have seen on film.
When someone who is depressed, especially if suffering a significant loss- suddenly seems "okay" or even better than normal, that is actually factually a serious warning sign for suicide
I would NEVER spoil the series by revealing that Athena becomes the Dark Lord of the Sith or that Ellen is the Kwisatz Haderach. And when you discover that Baltar is Luke Skywalker's father? MIND BLOWN!
This makes the most sense.

It was incredibly shocking and painful for sure. But still completely believable.
Interesting that you were wondering if they “re-jigged” anything after the writers strike, Chris. Ron Moore has gone on record saying that, while they stayed mostly on track with what they planned, Ron and David did use the time to rethink a few plot elements and character arcs. And in fact, they did make some changes going forward. While they’ve never come out and said what those changes were (to my knowledge), I personally think everything worked out well. The back half of season 4 is some of the best television I’ve ever watched! Hope you end up thinking so too!
Poor Dee…lost without the dream. I was so shocked when I watched back in the day, and still am despite knowing it was coming. I believe I cried for her too.
I've been where Dee is in this episode and as an adult having been there some numerous times it's unreal how accurate her portrayal of feigned 'Okay' and happiness is displayed as this is exactly how I acted when I attempted S-cide.
I remember as SOON as she turned to smiling I was like "oh, she's gone.". 😢 Amazing storytelling
When despair overwhelms, it sometimes wins. I was stunned when it aired, I mean, it was obvious she was hit hard by the truth about earth, but when she checked out, far too close to real life, yes Ive had that shock of someone leaving like that, so it hit hard. Great writing
I think the moment Dee decided was on the Raptor journey back up to the Galatica, " Just don't give up, just don't give up, Just don't...... give......"
I think you're right her expression went blank right when she stopped talking

This is my favorite episode of BSG. It's like someone took the most challenging parts of 3 1/2 seasons and concentrated them into a single serving. One of the most bleak hours of TV I've ever seen. It legit affected my mood for the rest of the week after it aired.
It's funny that you mentioned the possibility that the writers might pivot after returning from the strike: in an interview back in the day, Ron Moore admitted they did just that. There were some elements of the last season that they felt weren't working as well as they would have liked, so they made some adjustments. He was vague as to what they were, but I have my guesses.
I also liked that you mentioned that you were gonna try to pinpoint the moment when Dee made her decision, because I think they definitely made an effort to depict that, and Kandyse McClure nailed it. For me, I think it was two moments: in the raptor at the beginning of the episode, and then just after Gaeta leaves their quarters. They also tip their hand a bit when she's talking to Lee before he asks her to get a drink. The way she's talking subtly makes it sound like she's not gonna be around for the stuff she's telling Lee to do.
I love the Adama/Tigh scene, too. Apparently EJO ad-libbed the "she smelled so good" line. And the "fox in the river" story was a reference to the book/movie this episode is named after, as well as the real-life memories of one of the writers (David Weddle).
I actually was supposed to record more content after this one, but I couldn't. I had to stop for the day 😅

There have been some amazing television shows and episodes in the last few decades in particular. This is one of my favourite episodes of any show all time. It's a rollercoaster, it's a sci-fi setting but a human experience so impactful.
Everything is coming together, everything is moving towards the goal, all the strands will soon be connected...

We've lost a LOT of souls on Galacticas journey..... but I don't think any were as gut-wrenching and shocking as the loss of Dee: and hats off to Kandyse McClure for an absolutely beautiful portrayal.
As far as the acting credits go, I have to give this episode to her and to Michael Hogan - Tigh being the calming, logical voice of reason as all around him falter is perfect!

Thanks Chris for bring me to tears with your reaction. Powerful episode. How is it possible to love something so sad? Dee's suicide was so unexpected and haunting. In a way it was necessary to point out just how shattering it would be to flee extinction, have a dream of redemption only to have it crushed in the worst way possible. I loved the flash back scene knocking Chief flat on his a**. When you look back on the series, you are going to appreciate so many small things in 'slower' episodes that set up powerful scenes through out season 4.5.
This is about the happiest I've been seeing you react to something. Thank you.

I'm glad Dee was the spoiler you knew, honestly. If you were going to know one of them from here on out, I would have possibly preferred that one? It sucks you knew beforehand, but honestly there were other things I was worried you knew. So I kinda had a sigh of relief when you said what was spoiled. Whew! Poor Dee though. :( And the person who spoiled that for you is awful. Don't know how that bit of info would just "accidentally" slip out.
This was the most devastating episode for me. Still brings me to tears.
"Other words that start with D...." Devoid-of-hope, it's one word. The breakdowns, this is what happens when a civilization ends. Civilization is hope, hope for the future both of your line and your culture. Civilizations end when everyone gives up and stops believing. Some people insist all will be fine as the world tears apart, others just give up on tommorrow, and some turn into beasts driven only to survive one more day and do that again. Only it happens slowly in most cases; here, in a matter of hours. Bill's breakdown is great acting and Saul dragging him out of the despair by the scruff of his emotional neck is ever bit as solid.
And it didn't surprise me. Kandyse McClure was probably vexxed about being bound to a contract when she wasn't getting screen time. You can count the seconds prior to this episode where Dee was onscreen, and the retained vs on screen pay is very different, but she had to be available rather than looking for a gig that was paying better. Or so I've always thought. So, one more good day and out. And honestly, if the idiots in charge ever make the choice to push the button, expect a lot of those that survive the final temper tantrum to do this. The people who just want and candy bar and bottle and one more roll in the hay before they give up. Don't give up.
(20:49) Oh man, I didn't realize THAT was the spoiler you knew. It's very unfortunate you knew, but it's good, at least, that it still caught you off guard when it happened as it did the rest of us. Because you mentioned you knew a spoiler while Starbuck was finding Viper parts, I thought the bizarre result of THAT (the burned body) was the spoiler you knew.
Yea, I was devastated when I found out, mostly because I knew what a big spoiler it was. I always assumed it would be some arc that culminated in that so it was a good (and devastating) surprise to have unfold the way it did.
The editing got a little weird for a moment because I was super thrown by the interruption 😅 I sadly pretty much talked completely through Starbuck realizing the numbers were her ship before I was able to actually refocus. Thankfully, I still caught the gist of it.
Every time I've seen this episode it's been simply devastating.
This was in fact the final episode before the writer's strike, so it definitely would've been something to end here. And I will also say, what we get from the finale, is different than what Ronald D. Moore initially intended.
That was an obnoxious door knock if I ever heard one.
We can't possibly answer your question about Ellen without a spoiler. So you will have to watch on to find out. All I can say is that you got hints that the final 5 you know about have a direct connection to Earth (the Flashbacks).

The loss of hope, of dreams, of desires.
All the sacrifices for nothing.
The bleakest episode of the entire series, every scene is like a gut punch.
Earth? Nuked
Dee? Resigned
Adama? Killing himself to hold it all together
Roslin? Done
Kara? Literally finds charred corpse, existence comes into question
Deanna? Decided to stay and rot
Tigh? Finds out he murdered his own partner of 1000+ years
Lee? Moment of happiness and then absolute loss
Leoben? Finds out he's entirely wrong about literally everything
Tyrol? Sits next to the silhouette of his own ashes imprinted on a wall
Bleakest maybe. Darkest....
Gutted that you're coming to the end of BSG; you've been a great watch...
...Fortunately, you've started DW already, and BTVS (another of my favourites back in the day), so I'll still be around for more Nerd.
Next? I've seen "The Haunting of Hill House" all the way through and THOROUGHLY recommend it. ;)
"Black Mirror": I've seen the first few seasons and should probably get round to watching the rest. Definite "Tales of the Unexpected"/"Inside No9" vibes...
..."Supernatural": I've seen the first few episodes... Going to give it another go. Was more of a timing issue that I didn't see it more. ("It's not you, it's me" is sometimes true! ;) )
"Breaking Bad": I couldn't get into. "The Expanse": I haven't tried... Should I?
Well, it looks like the expanse will win the poll so I'll let ya know lol! I am probably gonna add Hill House leading up to Halloween so that should be fun!

Where is she? We saw just one of her in the fleet, and Saul sacrificed her. So there are 0 Ellens currently in the fleet.

The 4th season is in fact head spinning. It is full of plot lines and twists and trines. It is great!
Obviously the fifth cylon resurrected after it died and is somewhere out there. perhaps having not the best time with his/her fellow cylons.
You must watch the “Portlandia” episode “one more episode” (some of this cast are in it). It might make you smile, too
Utterly brilliant episode - the descent of the couple into fan obsession was brilliant, to say nothing of "Ronald Moore." 😂 But the funniest part for me was that friends had tried to get me to watch the show for ages, and this was the first time they got me to sit down to for it. And the BSG stuff was great, but even though they knew that Sleater Kinney is my favorite band, it never occurred to them that all they had to do was tell me that Carrie freaking Brownstein was in it. Buncha dopes. 🤣

My response is just being baffled. I can be sometimes be stubborn and inflexible. When Ellen died I completely accepted I was wrong about her being a cylon so it took me a few days to process the information this episode gave us.
When Dualla kills herself, it’s so shocking….

Indeed! The idea of her being a Cylon was driven so completely out of my mind when she died that it took me a minute to even start accepting the reality.
one suggestion for your channel. please dont put commercial breaks right at the crescendo of an emotional moment. we are rewatching the show with you to re-experience it and the commercial break ruins it for us. a commercial happened right when Dee pulled the trigger and it just takes you right out of it to have a commercial interrupt everything

Yep, we were Cylons. So, on Kobol they created their own Cylons. The twelve colonies were founded by humans, the thirteenth was founded by the Cylons that fled Kobol.
The humans on the colonies forgot about those Cylons, and centuries later, created their own.
The Final Five Cylons apparently come from Earth. The Significant Seven Cylons evolved from the robotic Cylons on the colonies.
Ellen is a Cylon.
Why didn't the Fifth Cylon activate with the Final Four? Why didn't the song wake them up? Because they weren't with the fleet. Why weren't they with the fleet? Because they were dead.
Firstly, I hoped it was Billy. But I knew they killed him off because of the actor, but I loved him and Dualla, so I hoped for a little while. But then it became obvious.
In Ellen's first episode, Gaius tests her to see if she is a Cylon, and he then indicates to Head Six after he clears her, that he might not have been telling the truth. Baltar has known since Season 1 that Ellen is a Cylon. Hers is also a pretty major death. Ellen Tigh is a Cylon. She was always the obvious suspect.
The Final Five have been revealed.
Also RIP Dualla and Kara. This episode reveals Kara Thrace really did die last season.
And goodbye Three. She's staying on Earth to die. So, that's another character essentially dead too.

There are later revelations I am specifically not mentioning. I don't spoil.
The episode tells you Earth was founded by Cylons from Kobol. We know the origins of the Cylons from the Colonies.
The episode specifically tells you the final Cylon will be revealed, and it is, it's Ellen.
Dualla and Kara are both established as dead. Three is staying behind to die.
I also mention an episode from Season 1, again, not a spoiler.
If you missed any of this information in the episode, you weren't paying attention.
Keep in mind that when Baltar tested Ellen in season 1, we had no idea that there were two different types of human-looking Cylons. As they explained in "Revelations", the final five age, the other seven do not.
We saw Baltar's test identity Boomer as a Cylon, but would it identify one of the final five? Given that we don't actually know what the test said about Ellen (and later Galen Tyrol in "Resistance"), we will apparently never know. Either the Cylon detector works on the final five and Baltar knew at least two of them, or it doesn't and he was always as clueless as the rest of us.
