I live here in the Rio Grand Valley in the area where it was the direct landfall . It was horrible last night, my kids had never experienced a hurricane they cried and worried all night . I was just thinking about my aunt who’s in critical condition in ICU fighting for her life because she’s ill from covid 19. All night long i prayed for all the covid 19 patients in hospitals hoping no outages for them my heart felt for them . My house had some minimal damage but we are okay . Thousands of people sustained damage & still are with out power and told it could be days before it is restored . Keep Us RGV in your positive thoughts tonight we really need it .. ❤️

That's good to hear! As someone who listens to weekly calls with FEMA since COVID started, I know the biggest concern wasn't that the storm would be unmanageable. The concern was that flooding and downed electrical grids could require disaster sheltering, which could be dangerous for the virus spreading. I'm glad to hear that Texas officials were prepared and managing so well!

My husband is a power lineman. It costs a lot more to go underground, and in North America the lines have to go many miles, not like in those pocket sized countries in Europe! And they DO have power outages when the underground’s get humid or the substations get shorted or the wires fail, transformers leak etc. My nephew does underground and it is dirty crappy backbreaking work. Overheads are clean work, and accessible to bucket trucks. If overheads are well maintained, there are fewer outages. Someday we will have green powered generators on every roof... hopefully.

@@granmabern5283 Not sure if you really understand the subject...
You use underground powerlines in cities and towns and I'm pretty sure that houses are approximately the same distances apart from another in US cities as in Europe. Nobody would use underground wires to cross several miles of land, there you use high voltage overland cables - which are built in a way to withstand strong winds and also have no transistors attached to blow up in lightning storms.
The underground cables are actually not much more difficult to install then overland lines. You dig a trench with an excavator and drop the cables into it - pretty easy and not at all back breaking. It's probably easier then to install a pole every couple of meters and have them climbers install all the cables.
The underground cables are installed at a depth where they aren't affected by temperature change and they obviously don't cause any issues with moisture - it's not bare wires.
But I understand that in the USA you rather do things like you always did and aren't fond of "innovation". It's just ridiculous to see reports of poweroutages after each storm. I lived in Texas for 2 years and we had powerloss after every thunderstorm, which was approx. 20 times a year at least. That's just ridiculous if you aren't living in a 3rd world country.

Driving at night for an hour and a half through this was terrifying. The rain and winds were so strong they looked like waves on the road. Trees were falling and flying around. Green lightning and small pebbles of hail fell. People are suffering from the damage today after their roofs caved in and homes flooded. Idk why this hurricane affected us worse than the ones from past years. In the outskirts where people have wooden homes it was especially bad. It was so scary I can't imagine what people with high category hurricanes have been through.
