  • We finally install our rain water catchment system and are able to gravity water our gardens.

    If would have them underground you could keep them from freezing easier. Plus, you wouldn't have those tanks so visible...

    algae growth is a thing..might consider paint the totes or covering them with contractor's black plastic

      Nitrifying bacteria also work! I put them in my pond to prevent algae growth and they work great. I use the stuff by Brightwell Aquatics. But they do work best when there are rocks in the container to give them a lot of surface area to grow on. They will eat algae and fix the nitrogen, but if no other plants are in the container, the amount of added nitrogen will be quite low.

    I've tried to catch rain water, I get tired and the neighbors think something is wrong with me

    Actually, collecting water off of a shingle roof is no good because of the chemicals in shingles, I've seen drip lines eat through bushes...
