RIP to those that lost their lives in this tragedy
No RIP unless they are born again.
Lol
I missed that bus the 6am out of Tampa
Overslept
God Blessed me
My uncle was also supposed to be on that bus!!
An accident similar to this one happened five years earlier. The Tasman Bridge in Tasmania collapsed after it was struck by an ore carrier in 1975. Twelve people were killed. _(5/11/2022)_
I lived in Tampa and Clearwater from 1974-1979 working as an insurance marketing rep. and crossed this bridge daily. After hearing of this disaster, I counted my lucky stars that I left Florida less than one year before this happened. RIP to those who lost their lives.
I live at the south side of the bridge and to this day I have a fear going over even on the new bridge. And I always check the weather because high winds send you all over the place!
This a reminder to not wreck a boat any time soon?
Wow, that accident took a lot of lives.
I was a freshman at USF when this happened remember it vividly, very scary tragedy especially at the time. Incredible how time flies by us.
I remember the Skyway accident and the Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn sinking. Both were tragic accidents.
I was sitting in class , East Bay High , Riverview Florida when this happened , I still remember it . Joel
May All the Victims Rest in Peace
Hurr Dee hur. They're dead. They don't read CZcams comments.
@Adam Barnes so "god" is reading CZcams comments?
I was there in St. Petersburg and that morning we had a crazy rainstorm. I've never experienced such a strong rainstorm like that in my life before.
There was a Greyhound bus that went down and several, including an infant, passed that day.
I remember the day this happened. It was a rainy day, I was in elementary school. The office put news updates over the intercom, for the teachers i'm sure. Walking from classroom to classroom in the rain and hearing the updates was something I did not understand for many years.
Then something even worse happened in 2001
@@starwindamada5313 Apply her sentence to 9/11 and you got my experience of 9/11.
Just seeing that broken bridge just scares me.
The guy who was driving the boat that hit the bridge ultimately passed from what one would presume to be health complications due to the severe depression he went through during the years following the tragedy.
He was drunk.
The captain of the ship. Of multiple sclerosis.
@@patrickgauthier2844that's what I remember having grown up in St Pete. Just found out, he wasn't drunk and was cleared. He ended up teaching others. Now they said it was fog..🤷
May they ALL RIP 😢…this was terrible 😣
I was going across that morning and went to tampa instead. I Lived at the end of that bridge. I was going to sarasota but changed my mine and as i was going across the frankland bridge to tampa i heard the radio broadcast the bridge had falling.
I drove over this bridge with some friends when I was a junior in high school 1961 was a very scary even if the time
For those wondering it was a freak accident. The dock captain wasn't at fault and the courts/investigators both agreed it was an act of god causing the ship to move out of control.
It was a type of wind gust that drifted the boat after the captain had fully applied the rotors to brake well ahead of time. There was a severe storm, with gusts up to 80 mph.
I will never forget this tragedy, where I was or what I was doing that day. I pray for The Families, Friends, and Loved Ones of those who lost someone every year. It's still so haunting to me.
Retired from Greyhound from St. Petersburg, Florida, crossed Skyway Bridge almost daily! My home at time was Ft. Lonesome near Palmetto, Florida!! Knew Mike Curtin, Greyhound Driver, RIP all!
RIP to those lost 🙏
I remember my mom reading this story at the time about one of the deaths was a woman who drove from NYC down to Florida to get a hair cut.
She must of really loved her hair or the barber or both.
I remember this so vividly. My mom called me to make sure I wasn’t on the bridge that morning
I wonder if the person who was driving the boat that hit the bridge went to jail
Captain John Lerro was piloting the empty ship. He had piloted ships under the Bridge over 900 times but because of a major storm and poor visibility he was having a hard time controlling the empty ship and was unable to turn or stop the ship in time once he realized the it was going to hit the bridge. After a trial he was exonerated and his license was reinstated. A short time later he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and spent his time answering crisis hotlines and helping others. He died in 2002
@@georgiaboy1579 praise God he wasn’t at fault. Good thing he wasn’t black or else we know they’d have put his ass under the jail just for good measure.
The weather was bad should of stopped. And waited out storm
Oh my so sad 😞
Not just cars, but a Greyhound bus plunged into the water. The lion’s share of deaths were on that bus.
I didnt know about this , i wasnt alive back then but i mightve been on this bridge 3 or 4 times
my dad lived in miami in 1980, thank god he was there.
The new bridge is beautiful ❤️
That is terrible and frightening and the nightmare for family and friends God bless you all
Wow
That is so horrible
I was on the shore when this happened, it was horrible.
My Marine Corps buddy, Bob Raiola was one of the first DOT divers to start removing bodies from the submerged vehicles.
RIP 🪦
I remember it!
😞
I miss Tampa
Me too!!
Do anyone know the details on the deceased on the bus? I'm hearing that many Tuskegee University students were on that bus as well and I'm trying to figure exactly how many, were they new or returning students, etc. Anyone from that era has info?
and NOW baltimore key bridge crash ,,,,, history repeats itself...
I remember that day… Just a terrible tragedy..
Wow.... A lot of lives lost...
What year did this take place?
''Over 41 years ago, on May 9, 1980'' was very easy to use google, you should try it sometime.
Report was on May 9 2022 the lady says 42 years ago so if we subtract 42 from 2022 we get 1980. Also the accident was obviously Trump's fault.
Is anyone here from the Baltimore collapse today (2024-03-26)?
Now Baltimore has had the same issue… and no one does nothing about unsafe infrastructure before a disaster happen
I helped build that new bridge. I won't go on that bridge. I was crew on a tugboat and spoke regularely with the engineers and inspectors. All sections are tied together. If any one section goes down, it will go down from shore to shore all 7 miles.
Yikes, not a pleasant thought. Fortunately I don't live anywhere near there.
That's scarey!
Bullshit
You say you helped build the bridge, but yet you don’t know the accurate length of the bridge nor does anyone believe you. Each, individual structure holds a portion of the bridge. I know this cause if you are telling the truth, you probably spoke to Jimmy Lairscey who’s my great grandfather. He was head of FLDOT at the time. And fwi, the bridge is 4 miles long.
@@loristewart800 And it’s spelt Scary, the bridge is actually very peaceful.
Watched it as it happened from Port Manatee.
I don’t like long bridges that’s why I fly high speed across
So if a bridge collapse doesn't kill you, a high speed accident might! You are trading one type of death over another. 🤔
I remember this it was awful
Isn't it amazing same incent as Baltimore wow
42 means in 1980 rite
Jesus. 32 people
35 people died in 1980when that bridge got hit.
My day went over the bridge 15 minutes before it collapsed.. He was hauling a load of Watermelon
Invest in science not war
New safety = new false sense of security.
God they can’t just let the man talk. He says 2 words & they quick cut. Then 2 more and cut again. This is why I hate the news
I don't trust bridges period!!!! I hate going across them and if I had to I try to move fast across them quick as possible!!!!!!!
Never knew this happened but I wasn't alive then and I'm not from Florida but I stay in Jax now.
hoffa?
Fun fact: You live by this bridge
It was a Greyhound Bus.
They said it was a freighter not a bus a greyhound bus went over when it happened but a freighter caused it to collapse.
@@Mark-nu5vg That is what I was saying.
*Greyhound*
@@jayskicksnfits9372 Thank You.
@@robertphillips6296 You're welcome.
Nothing about this is funny, Stay alert! History has a way of repeating itself!!!
i like how everything on her body is wrinkle except her face look like bruce jenner
We see a disaster politicians see money those hand railing are $75 dollars a foot, the tax man get charged $250 dollars afoot. thing is people don't care about your grief, to your face yes. A new bridge is to be built, my brothering laws company won the bid what do you know. If you saw what went on behind the scenes here/anywhere you'd be sickened. The bottom line is that a lot of money is made from disasters.. Look at the actions of a human being after something like this happens and it will tell you all you need to know. Look at the vultures lining up to get the work, thats all it is to the ones that didnt lose anyone.
Ask your brother-in-law if he knew a Jimmy B Lairscey
Yeesh, read much?

These news stories are annoying af that they dont even pay attention to the details. First said 32 people, then said 35 people..its all a circus of media attention for news companies smh they dont ACTUALLY care.
I cook gortons fishsticks in the oven than take them with me to Supermarket and sneakly place 1 with note on it by the Cashier and watch them from distance. The note say DO NOT GET AN ABORTIN!!!
I leave the notes in cartoons of eggs.... 'eating this baby bird is avian abortion...'
The world we live in, where is the empathy you know????
I leave notes on boxes of green tea that say don't drown baby tea leaves it's arbor abortion.
To the PhDs leaving comments, as your medical advisor I would advise you strongly to lay off the meth for a few weeks. You’re welcome.
