A very good episode of "Stories of the Century" with Jim Davis as railroad detective Matt Clark.
The best musical score for a Begging. Nostalgic too😍
Thank you for the upload.
Watching + enjoying from Australia.
1) I read a book about the Benders. Their house was no where that nice. It was just one room cabin with a curtain across the middle. Then they tossed the victim into a hole in the floor.
2) The stagecoach driver was Slim Pickins!
To Jim Brown.
Yes the stage coach driver appeared to be a younger and more thin Jim Pickens with the same voice.
Watching and enjoying from European Union, Lithuania.
The Hays Code (although dressed up in much more fancy language) simply did not allow the bad guys to get away. The HAD to be imprisoned or dead at the end of a movie. Hence the 'death' of Kate Bender.
This is very inaccurate.
The garden plot held 8 bodies, one of a 7-8 yr old girl. Others were buried in the orchard and some in the surrounding prairie. There may still be bodies that were not found. About a year after the Benders moved in there bodies began to be found in Drum Creek. Showing a blow to the head and a slit throat, as was common to the bodies found on the Benders homestead. As reports of missing people began to rise, people began to avoid going past that way. It is estimated that there were 12-21 people murdered there.
The Benders ran a sort of general store and inn where travelers could stop for food and rest or provisions. The Benders didn't kill all who stayed there. They looked for some indication of money or possessions worth doing in their patrons. The family consisted of a man ( John Bender) and wife(Kate Bender) and their 2 adult children( John Jr and Kate.) They moved into the area in 1870 and built a cabin approximately 16 x 24 feet. The one room cabin was divided by a canvas type curtain "old wagon sheet". Directly behind the curtain, on the floor was a trap door that opened into the basement. It is believed that John Jr stood behind the curtain while Kate distracted the person and then John Jr hit them with a hammer then cut their throat and dropped them into the basement. After dark they could go through the persons possessions for anything worth keeping and then bury them.
A sign outside the house said groceries. They also pretended to offer lunch and entertainment. Kate was a spiritualist. After several people began to come and go on the road past looking for their lost relatives and a lost Doctor the family packed up and moved on leaving everything except some bedding and their clothing. Even though there were rewards offered and people searched for them they were not found. It is still a mystery what happened to them. People came and took boards from the house and stones from the well as souvenirs. The museum at Cherryvale Ks has 3 hammers and a few other things that came from the house.
This is just a short version, if you want more details look online for "The Benders", or "The Bloody Benders."
This show's series is exciting to watch and it's great for entertainment purposes, but to say that they are "based on official Newspaper files and records" is a little misleading. I thought I'd give enough of the story to help people know what really happened.
BTW same thing on the Dalton Gang's raid on Coffeyville Kansas.
moviemakerwannabe Wasn't the 7 year old a Dr.'s daughter?
moviemakerwannabe Thanks - very interesting. The newspaper reports these shows are "based on..." were probably local 'Bugles', 'Stars' and 'Clarions'. All you have to do is compare their drawings of the criminals with their actual photographs to see how wildly inaccurate they were.
Even today the History Channel and NOVA seem to base their laughable 'Documentaries' on myth and heresay which, ironically, makes these shows just as valid. As John Ford said "If you have to choose between the truth and the legend - print the legend"
moviemakerwannabe Hey it;s TV...doesn't have to be factual, just entertaining. lol
The reason for my commenting was that they make the claim of taking their story from the official newspaper clippings and records of the time. I said toward the end that it was fine for entertainment but they shouldn't imply they are giving an accurate portrayal of the people and events when really it's just entertainment. Loosely based on true events would be more accurate. However, if you took the time to read that long long post I made you deserve a gold star. :)
moviemakerwannabe this is what should have happened
Couldn't imagine how long it would take to rebuild that bridge back then.slim pickens got some acting jobs cause he was the only one who could handle a team of horses. He was a real life cowboy before acting.
This is a very poor and inaccurate portrayal of The Bloody Bender family. One of my GGG Uncles and his daughter were killed by this family. They were found buried together with her body underneath her fathers in the garden. She wasn't slayed like the rest of the family. They didn't die. The Benders actually packed up and moved.
+Jennifer Parsons I have done a bit of research on the Benders and you are correct. There is so much more to the story than presented here.
I actually have articles regarding the murder investigation along with pictures up on Ancestry.com. It was sad to learn that my GGG-Uncle had just lost his wife and son, was moving out west with his remaining child, his daughter, to live with family and only stopped over for refreshments and a meal with this psycho family.
This is also the area from where the Ingalls based on the Little House on the Praire lived. They had already moved when the Benders moved into the territory.
George Newton Longcor and his daughter Mary Ann are my relatives.
So where did the Benders move to, and when did they finally die? Did they have crazy psycho family that are still alive today?
Ann,
When my ancestor George Newton Longcor and his infant daughter, Mary Ann, were never heard from again his former neighbor, Dr. William Henry York, went looking for them. Dr. York then himself went missing. Dr. York had some very well known brothers. Colonel Ed York and Alexander M. York, a member of the Kansas State Senate. When their brother went missing, they got involved first hand.
Oct 31, 1889 is when Ma bender and Kate Bender were arrested in Michigan for larceny. I do not know exactly if they were put to death or if they stayed in prison for their remaining days. John Bender Jr., is said to have died from apoplexy. John Sr., is said to have been arrested for murdering another man in the same fashion as all of the others, but while he was being held, he cut off his own foot to try to escape and he bled to death. By the time the Marshall's came to make an identification, his body was to decomposed to do so. Ma and Kate Bender were identified by a tintype photograph. Also affidavits from Ma Benders other daughter confirmed their identity.
Ma Bender's real name was Almira Hill. She married a Simon Mark (Meik) and claimed to have 12 children. It is also said that she murdered her own daughter-in-law Emily Mark.
I have not done their ancestry because they are not of course related to my tree. I have only gathered this information from the internet and from relatives passing along the story over the years.
The smell in that little cabin had to be horrific..
Excellent
Okay, so we know it is definitely inaccurate...but still I enjoyed it..as a fictional story BASED on actual events.
It's hammer time!
@Jenni Smith, this film shows at the end... Veda Ann Borg played Kate Bender.
I love wild west n old America
The beautiful mountains of Independence, KS. Lol.....
They've worn down a bit since the olden days... now we take em in at night and only set em out all day for special occasions...to avoid further damage...😘
differs greatly from historical accounts. and the pictures of the actual bender place are nothing like this. The victim that caused people to suspect the Benders was Dr. York . and there were four Benders. and the person instigating the investigation was Col York , the brother of Dr. York. And anyone who knows that part of the country knows that the there is not any bridge that tall. because the land is so flat.
+MadisonLady Madison and no bender was caught or killed. the only known accomplices are the individuals who fenced the properties of the victims. this is so far from the truth.
based on actual people and event. We know hollywood likes to add in and change alot from historical facts. But I think these films are exciting enough to get peoples attention and encourage more to read up on it.
Someone should make New tv show episode
seen a version of this, I think on Cheyenne.
A more full account of the Benders in comments below, in the replys to Jennifer Parsons
Why doesn't Jonesy carry a gun?
sry, Kate Bender, and btw I liked it
who played KATE BENDER?
Veda Ann Borg
Lively entertainment. Slim Pickens does his usual good job, this time as the stage driver. But the half wit brother upstages all of them and steals the show.
