  • Let's take apart more random crap laying around my house! This time it's a Japanese handheld rip-off of Pac-Man from Bandai, who ironically would later merge with Namco.

VFD displays are notorious for getting dimmer with age, one reason is the heater filaments get a build up of junk on them that reduces emission. The heaters can be somewhat rejuvenated by driving them hard enough to burn this off (just like a CRT rejuvenator) but this may be a little risky with an irreplaceable VFD.

At first I thought he wouldn't make that kind of mistake or he'd fix it.
However even at the end the mistake is still there when he said it was dim even with fresh batteries, well a reversed battery would explain that.
Also some old electronics had weird battery orientations but at the start of the vid you can see them alternating pretty normally on the socket indicating the battery direction.
Looks like the first battery needs flipping.

Yeah, I remember playing this in the arcades back in the day, totally not Pac-Man!

SO glad by the time I was a kid games were a bit more advanced! We had things like the game and watch and before I was 10, the Gameboy.
