I've watched a lot of Sixers teams since 98. Ben Simmons was a quintessential Philly athlete. He would've fit on that 2001 squad. One of the best players the Sixers had.

Hopefully JJ in this interview let's Ben know that we didn't expect him to be the next curry. Fans wanted you in the gym because your game looked like you ain’t been in one since your rookie season. Offensive growth is what fans wanted to see. What made fans the most irked was that in the off-season he shoots 3s and mids like it's nothing, but yet doesn't do that in the game. If you show heart and growth, Philly fans will embrace you. Embiid says this constantly, a lot of Philly Eagles players say the same thing.

As a Philly fan, I've always supported this man no matter what. Didn't care about his shooting and appreciated his defense and playmaking. I remember when we were vouching for this man to win the dpoy and when the media tried to say his style of play would never fit with Embiid's but we always defended him. The only thing that gets to me is how everything happened after the hawks series. Yes we don't know his side of the story but from any outsider's perspective it seemed like he was trying to screw the team over. I was one of the few that actually wanted Ben to come back and play but I knew it seemed impossible. I just hope we can get his perspective because I feel like fans who actually supported him through the years deserve to know what happened. I feel like I speak for most sixers fans minus the ones that are hell-bent on his shooting. Most of us aren't mad because he didn't shoot or because he passed up the ball, we are just disappointed and angry that he left us with this feeling like all the years we spent supporting him were worthless.
It really isn't rocket science, honestly. The team threw Simmons under the bus. It is that simple. They fucked him over on the court, and off the court. Remember how dominant the team was in the regular season (on offense and defense), and how they faltered in the post season.. That had nothing to do with Simmons perceived weaknesses or poor playoff performances. The team had a 3 - 1 record in the playoffs during the Embiid/Simmons era when Embiid missed the game, while they were 0 - 4 when Simmons missed the game. In fact, Simmons dominated when he was called upon - and actually lead the team to wins (in the playoffs). Embiid didnt.
If you want to know why the 76ers failed in the post season, it is entirely down to bad coaching. They flipped the script every year, and the result was the same. The deeper the Sixers went in the playoffs, the less Simmons had the ball in his hands. They did this to 'fix' his weakness and prevent the HackaSimmons strategy. Ofcourse this didn't actually fix anything, and just created other, much more serious problems. When you take the ball out of your best play makers hands (who happens to be the best 3 point shot creator in the league and arguably the best passer in the league), everybody on the team suffers. Now they have to create for themselves, the spacing is terrible (because Simmons is clogging up the paint), and every body becomes less efficient because of it. Remember how good guys like Marco Belinelli, Dario Saric and Robert Covington looked in the regular season, and then how badly they stunk in the playoffs? Well that was because Simmons was no longer running the offense...
Simmons is not blameless of course. He could've solved this issue had he swollowed his pride, and shot the ball more. I believe it is true that he is a perfectionist, and refused to take these shots because he views them as inefficient... But almost every player in the league has weakeneseses in their game that will get exploited in the playoffs - and those that don't took years to develop into that player. Anyway, both Philly and Simmons appear to have benefitted from the split, so with some luck we will see both succeed in the future.

@@awdrpepper the "they threw him under the bus" narrative is downplaying the real issue. i dont think he refused to take the shot bc he was a "perfectionist". the moment got too big for him and he got scared. plain and simple. ben's defense was always good but big issue was he never really showed improvement on his offense over the years. embiid's game improved. Doc has always been bad, and ben couldve solved this issue by acknowledging where he failed and pulled out of the team without antics and fighting over grievance money..... philly losing wasnt entirely his fault, but he had huge responsibility as a player on max contract and simply didn't deliver.

I think simmons will ball out next season, due to the pressure being mostly on his teammates. People honestly forgot that he is an elite playmaker, will mercilessly bully any other PG 1v1, is a top notch defender...watch out!
