  • This is in my knowledge the first Live video images of Steve Gadd playing a DRUMSOLO on his famous 6 piece drumset Pearl Fiberglass Drumkit!
Got this special treat from a good friend of mine.
Watch him playing my favorite drumkit his Pearl Fiberglass drumkit with the Gretsch Nitron Bass Drum.
I think it is in Mikkel's New York 1976 during a concert of L'images, the band of Mike Mainieri.
    Very rare!

I saw him just a couple days after this show, at the Cellar Door in Washington DC. The outside temperature was in the Mid-teens, and it had been raining. About 40 minutes earlier, I had seen them doing last minute gear checks, before heading outside for a safety meeting. When they came back inside, Gadd headed to the bar and slammed a highball glass of Courvasier before climbing on stage. Within seconds, they had heated up a rather cold (literally) room to the boiling point and proceeded to "blow da' roof offa' da' joint." To this day, it is one of the most intense shows I've ever seen...

I’d love to somehow get that thumbnail cover photo of Steve Gadd at his old white drum set.

I'm not denying he didn't use the pearl fiber glass kit, That year. but I went to his actual website And he said that he signed w/ Yamaha in 75 - 76. He actually used Evans heads in the 70s. Before he got an endorsement with Remo In the late 70s, early 80s.. And he uses pinstripe for some situations, but he mainly uses remo coated heads. But he was One of the first people to start using an actual 10 inch. Tom, that wasn't a concert, tom tom. I know hes been using that Yamaha recording custom for a long time and those beautiful Dry Zildjian K series. But I think that's killer That he used that pearl fiberglass kit for a time. But I can't imagine Yamaha being too happy about that. Unless what's written in his website, Is a typo. That's all i've ever played is pearl drums i've always used their blended kits, Their session drums. Love that birch and mahogany/ kapur sound. SSC & SSS

Still so nutty to see Mr. Gadd on that kit (not to mention the Gretsch bop kit in that other vid).
Who’d have known that 10 years later, there’d wind up being tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of drummers worldwide who wanted to play just like him, myself included. Lol
Thanks very much for posting this.

There's a video of Steve Gadd playing a solo when he was still in the army (search Steve Gadd army). That video is older. This vid is still great though because you can see the evolution of his solo ideas.

He got better at trimming the fat from his solos later on. In the late 80’s this solo would have been 1/4 the length but still just as impactful.

Amazing, and this was the same year that he played on Asia I believe. Here he’s playing in a little club up in Rochester New York with an incredible band of now legendary players including Tony Levin on bass.
