  • Can you walk and chew gum at the same time? Rub your belly whilst patting your head? Triple-tongue three-octave arpeggios while sitting on the shoulders of a unicycle-riding bear in a party hat? Hmm...you're tough......how about: can you be principal trumpet of both the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic at the same time? HA! ...then you're not Chris Martin, our 30th guest on Brass Chats.
Lots of trumpet (slash brass) nuts and bolts in this one. Watch and learn all about how he warms up, what he works on every day, how he develops his sound, and of course---how he navigates the looming minefield of the Monster Round. This one easily gave us about 6 months of stuff to work on in the woodshed. Enjoy! ...and then go practice.

“Life’s too short to worry about other people judging you”. Words we probably all agree with and take for granted. But words that apply to life in general too. Brilliant interview!

Been playing 70 years. Had some amazing teachers and so amazing to hear what has never changed is the great ones knowing how and what to play and get there. No brag but Phil Smith , Mel Broiles, Carmine Caruso, Bob McCoy, Jim Maxwell, Clark Terry were among them. Met Mr. Martin once - what a wonderful person and player. Doc Severinsen used to play on the beach on Long Island and try to bounce it off England lol ! True story. Stamp is great in that he was able to coalesce what had come before ( Max Schlossberg, Rheinhardt, Caruso, and others) . He invented little but it's worth starting there for breathing.

He mentioned playing with reverb. Anyone got any ways as to how to do that exactly? Is it like an app or something else I would need to buy,

If you have an Mac, iPhone or iPad, you can use garage band with a reverb setting. Works pretty good! I bet there are other options out there too.

Practice in a room with open space and bare walls. If possible, no carpet or large furniture that would absorb the sound. High ceilings help as well.
To increase the effect, practice out into the space. For example, sit in a corner and play to the opposite corner.
