Much like the taste of Italian oil from freshly harvested olives, there is something about the quality and purity of the early Italian keyboard repertoire that is hard to put into words. It is simply something to be savored again and again. Having played this repertoire since my childhood, it is a privilege to revisit it for this occasion, bringing my Italian harpsichord built by Graziano Bandini (after Mattia di Gand, 1685).
The program begins with a Recercada by Marc’Antonio Cavazzoni, whose keyboard music was published in 1523 and marks the beginning of independent keyboard music in print.
Another 500-year anniversary to celebrate is William Byrd, whose music was influenced by the Italian style and who combines in this Fantasia both forms of vocal music and Renaissance dances, where you can even hear the cosmos with its planets and their eternal movements.
In Girolamo Frescobaldi’s keyboard music, which is the main course of the evening, the harpsichord speaks a humanlike language. The pieces in this program are based on famous songs of the time, where people believed that the human voice is a substance that, with the help of air and vibrations, affects the body and modifies the liquid balances in the body. Perhaps little known is that he also composed the famous song “We wish you a merry Christmas,” where the audience will be kindly invited to join in singing.
