Arena shooters were wild. I remember in the early 00s the local internet cafe was divided in 2 categories: those who played Counter-Strike and those who played Unreal Tournament. It was always fun to argue about these games.

A great map. Played it a lot back then. I have to LOL at you saying "facing worlds as a teenager". I was in a UT99 team back in 1999. I was 40 years old then on a DSL modem.. Fragged a bunch. Defended our flag. Ratings ranked me at 65 out of 100 back then. I've lost that skill. I've become too old. It happens. I'm ok with it.

The late 90s/early 2000s era just had that cool ass freaking vibe. The graphics, designs, music, atmosphere, just everything in general. I was born in 2000 but I always looked back and damm y’all 90s kid had it good. I was to little to comprehend the good stuff until later on around 2009. I love this type of sound In music.

When I was seven (in 1997) I used to sneak downstairs early af in the morning and play Mechwarrior on my dad's chunky MacOS, then played Quake around 10-11 years old. But around 14 years old I found Unreal Tournament 2004 and my entire life was changed forever. It's crazy how music can be so deeply influential at that age. Now I live in Denver and chose here out all of the East Coast largely because of the jungle scene. Pure vibes.
What a beautiful story and memories, my man! I have a lot of similarities with that because I also gradually discovered the best games, it was such great experience living in those days. I didn't know the jungle scene was so present in Denver, huge!

Getting into pc gaming in 99 was awesome, we were getting the new wave of tech and the graphics for games started to come into their own. The music and overall attitude of everything was pretty on par to our liking. Everyone was still anxious and dreaming about what could be in the near future. Im glad i was just becoming a teenager in 99.
I think this era truly encapsulates and embodies the organic and creative growth of the internet and gaming. It was a time of discovery and enthusiasm. Sadly, today, everything boils down to profit, microtransactions, and the next release. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Nothing takes me back to the turn of the millennium, like early FPS music. This is nostalgia in its purest form. Even though I never played Unreal, the sound feels dear to me and I'm in love with every soundtrack. My ex was an Unreal level designer, so I know the game through her. I love every goddamn second of these videos. Every last pixel and soundwave. It is where my mind wants to be.

I remember not having internet access to play UT ‘99 growing up but my Dad got it for me anyway. Whenever I got bored headshotting with the sniper, I would just spam the Monster Kills with the Redeemer lol.
There were some endless nights back then. Man...the good memories.

UT2k4 was my favorite. The custom maps and modifications was a game changer and the community was strongly connected as a result of that.
The single player/story mode was also ahead of its time.

Crazy, I've listened to Foregone Destruction for 25 years and haven't noticed until now that the cymbal sound that start at 0:22 moves from the left to the right and back in a constant manner. I guess you can only notice it with headphones on.

Man, sometimes I forget songs can actually make someone happy or have an emotion. I never played Unreal tournament, nor do I hear a lot of drum and bass songs. But after studying for an exam, and realizing how....Idk, lonely or boring? My life is, these songs have such a nostalgic feeling to the point where I'm actually being a bit emotional over these. Honestly, I kinda wish I was or atleast experienced the past, my parents or some old fps games I play like Quake, duke nukem or half life gave me this possibility, although I think that's a fraction of it. I honestly thought there long texts were bs back then, but here I am making one. Thanks for making this playlist tho, love the atmospheric tone

I wonder if kids in year 2099 will feel 90s dnb sound being hopelessly outdated and retro and grandpalike, bit like we feel whenever we hear 1920's jazz recordings made with era-specific microphones
I had never thought about it that way, wow. Retro definitely, until then the sound quality will be insane but I think dnB will be a precursor to a lot of things, just like jazz was and still is

I mean they grew up listening to it
Jazz is stylistically infused into your favorite mechanized genres from that era...house, acid house, techno, drum n bass, hardcore, freestyle, eurodance etc
Jazz was the music of choice for Soviet scientists and engineers who wanted to experience the future...much the same way we listen to drum n bass when thinking about outer space and sci fi

man seeing facing worlds. i remember setting up my first LAN match with it. and me and my sis being so happy. i told my clan mates i was only like 12 ish. they where so happy and proud. one even gave me his copy of diablo1. and playing tons of gods strangelove and darkmagic :(
i must of sunk 10.000 hours into this damn game. because it was near all i had really i was poor. so all i could play was diablo unreal99 and doom1/2 and playing tons of doom wads i found off the web. and gaming with friends over msn chat trying to get better at unreal each night to compete in my clans tournaments.
