Adding a Choke to a Tactical Shotgun - Professional Gun Smithing Series

- This video took me a couple weeks to edit... I hate it when work gets in the way of life! Anyway, Scott of Scotties Gun Works invited me over to watch him prepare a Remington Tactical Shotgun for a choke... You heard me right! Now I know we have a lot of wild turkeys around here, but a tactical shotgun. There's a few challenges to that... to say the least. And remember folks, if you try this at home... DON'T SHOOT SLUGS!!!

I was impressed with how slow he went and how careful he was.... A++
A true Craftsman at his work. Wonderful Job my hats off to you.
Great job scotty, i love when people go old school with their tooling. Great attention to detail
Great video, excellent work from the gunsmith! Very informative, took out all the mystery from the subject of multichoke cutting/installing, thanks.
Great info, great people, world needs more people like you guys. Thanks for the content!
Watching this vid has given me the confidence to do it myself... Thanks guy's
Most instructional video on you tube concerning this subject...thanks
aracp Quite a compliment! Thank you! I'll let Scott know... Chris
@@poboyspecialI'd say, 9yrs later, it still is. Watched another video of your shop's channel doing 2 barrels. Really thinking about having this done to a 20" Maverick in the future.
Here in 2024, what does it generally run minus shipping & return?
Great video. Gunsmiths and the skills they have are dying out. Glad to see you passing on the knowledge.
Great video, my goodness, that is very informative.
I really appreciate this type of videos, thanks!
+luis alvarez You are most welcome. We have bunches of other videos with Scott covering a LOT of other topics. Check out his playlist. czcams.com/play/PLW31XX5XBJOobU9n-_gbwIgXEUnXCT8Bh.html
Great job!!! I'm gonna try it myself soon.
Excellent video Brownell’s is the only way to go
Great video man. Thanks for sharing.
This guy definitely knows his stuff.
Lovely machining procedures and a great, informative video. Awesome clarity and the audio is absolutely fantastically clear!
Need to sleeve shotgun barrel to turkey hunt
Great video.
Now I know it can be done. Thanks
Thanks for the upload brother keep it 💯
This is so cool.
Fine video sir!
thanks for video, it's excellent
Great video! I am doing some research in regards to a choke that I'm going to use on a SG that is winchoke patterned. I'm actually just using it to lengthen the bbl to keep the darn sling/swivel from getting shot off. My question(s) are; if I don't put a choke tube in it with that damage the threading, and MUST I use a winchoke if not what thread pattern do I need? My research is pointing to a Browning pattern (cheaper). Thanks.
thanks i never would of thought of a drill brace for this but now i will do it myself thanks
Thank you for great video
WHAT DOES HE HAVE INVOLVED IN REAMER +BRASS BUSHINGS AND THREAD TAP I BEEN THINKING ABOUT TRYING IT NOT SURE COST TOOLS IS NEEDED THANKS VARY MUCH 4 VIDEO LEARN ALOT HE MADE IT LOOK TOO EASY IM SURE ILL HAVE MY SHARE ISSUES STARTING OUT
Excellent video
That's exactly what I needed to see and know I recently bought a side by side that is cylinder board and I'm going to put choke tubes in that sucker so I can use it for more than a scatter gun
How much does this job usually cost? I have a 1948 topper 12ga that someone cut down and I'd like to add a choke to it again.
I have an 18 inch barrel for a Smith & Wesson 3000 is the walls too thin to thread for chokes it is straight poly choke
Is it feasible to install screw in chokes on a single shot rossi 20 gauge?
I have a Mossberg SA-20 tactical shotgun that I would like to put a choke on for either rabbit or turkey hunting. It is good to know that it is possible even with just a regular cylinder bore barrel. Thank for the video, very informative. The gun working guy is very handsome too, easy on the eyes
I was wondering why my shotgun didn't have thread and now I know.
I have a Remington 11-87 Special Purpose with 21” barrel I’d like to have this done to so I can run different choke tubes. On the side of my barrel it states that it’s an improved cylinder, does that make a difference on reamer/tap size?
Quick question.. I have a 1959 Remington 11-48 12g.. I'm wondering if I can do this to my barrel... and if I can add chokes, would that allow me to shoot steel shot through that old barrel
I would like to know if my win 1300 defender can be made to do this but i dont have the tools to know.
Please tap what did you use? How many threads per inch
I have a 32in shotgun barrel that I'm cutting down to 20 1/2. It had a fixed MOD choke. Do I need to take it into the gunsmith and tell them to add screw in chokes? Or would it be fine if I shot it that way? Thanks
Cool video 👍🇺🇸
Hello there nice video , I have a Winchester 1300 which barrels are no longer available for a 12 gauge and the lottery system online is what it is, I do have a rifled barrel for it and was wondering if I could get that bored down to a smooth barrel to save the shotgun it is a heavier barrel ?
How much should it Generally cost to get this done?
very interesting, couple of questions, once the choke tubes are added, ya cant shoot anything from it unless theres a choke tube of some kind in it right? how much does something like this cost to have done? and finally, what if, i didnt want this exact thing done, is there a way to take an extra barrel and simply have it rechoked? what i have is a hak 982 with a cylinder bore and i sure would like to have an extra barrel with the tightest choke possible
you have to run a choke/cylinder or you will trash the threads, IDK on cost. and you could probably find a spare barrel for this on ebay or gunbroker to have this done.
Can you thread any barrel for a rem choke? Or is there a minimum? I have a stock 18 inch and was wanting to add a rem choke to it.
Would it be possible to machine and thread a side by side double with modified and improved modified fixed chokes in the gun now? It's a Savage Fox B made around 1974.
So Scottie what are those readers called? I have a couple barrels I want to drill and tap for breech plugs and want a cutter and tap with pilots so I can keep it concentric.
Where can someone purchase the thread cutter? For the choke tube
Is there a vid that shows how to do the measurments. Looks like i will need to do this myself. Cant find a gunsmith here that is willing to do this.
Always thought a nickle was the correct tool for tube wrench.
You can shoot slugs through chokes tubes all day long without any problems. Unless its an ancient gun or you're running some crazy super full turkey chokes.
Can I do that to a Maverick 88 18-in barrel
I`m late to this party by I`m wondering..I could be wrong but it looked as though he was about 0.020" off to the right(left as viewing the video)of center. Would that make much of a difference ? I was going to do this by hand as he did to my tactical Benelli Supernova(slug choke) or should I chuck it up in my lathe and try it that way ?
Can anybody tell me a price of all these tools???
Hey if I sent you a Mossberg 20 gauge tactical barrel could you do the same thing for me putting a choke tube system in so I can put a Carlson's rifled choke tube in and how much would it cost to do that I could mail you the barrel.
So after this process is done will any type of choke screw into the end of the barrel?
STLNYYDET43 From Scott: It will take any choke as far as it fits the fully modified criteria. It just has to be threaded for Remington or Winchester. They won't interchange. Chris
What does it cost to have this done?
Would like to get that done on my Mossburg 500 ZMB. I feel the spread is way to wide
I want to do this on my Mossberg SA-20 for the same reason. But I'm not sure if the barrel is thick enough... I hope so because the spread is way to big for rabbit/turkey hunting effectively past 15 yards.
Can you thread a mossberg shockwave 14" barrel? Nice job man.
I'm going to assume it's possible but why would you put chokes on something you can't even shoulder?
You did not discuss the fit of the choke tube once installed. The reamer/tap insures the I.D. and thread is correct for the choke tube to screw in. However the original barrel I.D. determines if there is a "step" where the choke tube ends. Your counting on the barrel being the exact ID. And it should be. But they can vary at this far down the barrel, And certainly should be examined. If there would be a step there it could be dangerous when fired...JMO...
I assumed that was one of the measurements the smith performed before they started filming, I would certainly hope so anyway.
@@aleisterbroley900 yes certainly. He knows what hes doing..I just wonder about the step being an increase rather than getting smaller. Does that hurt anything ?
Hi Scotty I was wondering if you could do my barrel an 18 and a half inch Stevens pump security in 20 gauge for Carlson extended range choke and what you charge to do the job.i was tempted to do it myself but I wouldn't know where to buy all the reamers involved.
He only has 12g, if you want to do it yourself they have them at Brownells
Hi ! Great vid, but why do not use a lathe for that ? Thanks
1337BlueBird because everyone can’t afford a lathe for one barrel I believe he was trying to demonstrate that this job can be done by anybody with basic hand tools besides it’s a shotgun not a Percision rifle designed to shoot out to 1000+ yards
Is she shooting with steele or lead?
Need that conversionndone! Can you send me your information and cost + timeframe? Thanks!
Cool
i want to do this to the shockwave 590
I’m debating if I should do this to my mossberg M590a1 20” I was considering picking up a rifle choke so I can start shooting Sabo’s out of it
What would be the point? Just use foster slugs.
Ryan Cameron you can shrink your group size even with using foster slugs. But the main reason is for more capability out of my 590a1. You have to remember the 590a1 is a smooth bore with full choke.
@@Johnny-jr2lq yea can't use foster slugs with a full choke.
Ryan Cameron the rifled chokes aren’t choked they just have like 4” of rifling in them. But let’s say I wanna run some bird shot out of my 590 I can swap out the rifled choke for a full Modified or improved. Thus making my 20” 590 capable of more then a riot shotgun
@@Johnny-jr2lq I think it's 18" needed to get significant muzzle velocity. And it's only 15 fps per inch after 18. Most velocities on boxes are tested on 30" barrels. So unless you're using a 28" you're gonna get about 150 fps more than a 20" barrel. I like your I idea. When are you going to tap it?
At 11:07, same thing. Hole is not centered to the bore. Hope this guy has good insurance.
Something went wrong here, there is a prominent step where the bottom of the choke tube seats on the barrel, never seen that before.
he used a thin wall choke for the demonstration to show how it screws in but i'm sure he replaced it later with whatever thick walled choke the customer wanted
good video thanks, where can I get those tools?
He said brownells
great job guys, what are the tools used in the process? please let me know. greeting from far far away, Belize Central America.
I will call Scotty and ask him.... then tell you when I find out.
Thanks for watching.
thanks, and if you can get the size of the tools. it would be great. thanks for your quick response.
Scotty said everything came from Brownell's catalogue # 68 page 513 You can find it at www.brownells.com
thanks bro, i really appreciate your time... say hi to scotty...
I have a mossberg 835 12ga. barrel that is overbored. Can I have it reamed and threaded to use my choke tubes?
Just get mossberg 835 chokes
@@hunters.6894 The question was if i could get it reamed and threaded. I should have said, does anybody have a reamer and tap for a mossberg 835? I've looked everywhere and nobody knows. I guess the factory is the only place to get these tools.
That step (the barrel inside diameter beyond where you cut) is already a smaller diameter than the choke. So then, how is the choke going to make any difference? The choke isn't reducing the diameter so it's worthless.
Ted Bates I looked at two mossbergs, 4 remingtons, and a stoeger and noticed they all have that "seat" below the choke tube. I also noticed i have a few too many 12 gauges.😁
If your gonna keep uploading these awesome videos, please get a HD camera. Great stuff Yall!
The camera is HD, we just chose to upload in lower resolution so people can load it faster on portable devices.... thanks for the comment and watching.
Who am I to say this but, they do make a tool to remove the “C” clamp that won’t mess up your expensive die with a pare of cheap pliers. 🤔
1- that die is probably way harder than the pliers
2- there's nothing on that side of the die that could be messed up besides scuffing up the finish and if you're worried about that you shouldn't be in the business of using tools lol
they're gonna get scuffed up
Gun smith badass
Im assuming you get no second chances at thinning and threading the barrel?
That's really cool, do you know how much he charges? Does he accept mail in services?
Just call or email Scottie with all your questions...
Was curious if this would work on a Rem tac 14 or mossberg shockwave
Brian Finke - you might want to check with the manufacturer about it.
Brian Finke - Scotty said it should work, you must measure it to be sure. Check manufacturer for warranty disclaimer.
Why does it take two weeks for mine to b done
Why would u install a screw in choke on a tactical shotgun. They come cylinder choke which is recommende for home defense.
can the beretta 1301 be done?
Call Scotty and ask him...
How much does it cost to have a gunsmith to cut down a barrel and thread it?
Call Scott and ask him
That was awesome and if Scotty ever check this we would like your number!!?
why are you saying dont shoot slugs ?? can you not get a choke tube set up for slugs.. not that you have it threaded you can change it out for what ever you like right.
A choke is designed for shot to have tighter patterns. It was not designed or intended for slugs. Do people shoot slugs with chokes...? Yes, I personally do NOT. If your barrel is threaded you have a variety of choices.
mattmann22 In this case, for slugs, you can screw in a cylinder tube (which has no choke and maintains the interior diameter); or for some types of slugs, you can screw in a rifled choke. IIRC, F & S, did an informative article on cylinder bores with threaded rifled chokes. The shooter measured an increased accuracy with 3" magnum slugs at 100 yards. I don't remember the groupings but I do remember that the rifled choked didn't greatly improve distance or accuracy. Just a lil.
Sorry to say but I can see a huge wobble using that old speed wrench. WATCH the video again everyone. That speed wrench is too heavy of a tool to turn the cutter.
Can you send your number and your address please ho much is a mosberg barrell to put in a chock i suppose it doesn't matter as long as the barrell wall is thick enough thank you
why do you say not to shoot slugs?
great question.... many gunsmiths and shooters will not shoot slugs through a choke for fear of ruining the barrel, choke, etc. it was mainly designed for shot not slug.
+poboyspecial Remington makes a slug choke. It came stock in my 11/87. I wouldn't run a slug threw a mod, full or a improved choke.
Does this gunsmith do mail order jobs? I'd love to mail him my barrel and choke and have him thread it for me.
No gunsmiths seem to be in my area and I don't want to invest in the tooling at this time.
would have been nice to know min thickness
how much? can I mail my barrel to him?
Just call or email Scottie with all your questions...
“choke rings” ?????
A guy below mentioned it so I am as well. The step between the barrel and the tube. This is a good video and thank you for it but step isn't correct.. Sure the choke goes in but it will never perform the way it should. Shot coming down the barrel is already smaller than the choke. Look at it again!! The choke wont do a thing
I noticed that step/ridge too. Seems odd to me.
Looked like the choke was larger than the barrel bore. Oooops
That’s because the choke he screwed in the barrel is just to protect the threads when your not trying to restrict the shot now if you decide you want a tighter shot pattern you screw in a different choke or even better say you want to start shooting Sabo’s you can screw in a 5” pice of rifled choke to impart spin on the sabo
Every 870 i own has the same "step". Choke tubes are actually tapered on the i.d. from end to end for pattern constriction. Wider in the rear and form a cone-ish shape at the muzzle. A step in the opposite direction would tear off wadding and cause all sorts of fun things to happen.
Algorithm fighter
At 8:39 in the video, the hole is NOT centered to the bore. Stop the video and look. Danger danger!!!!!!
Chokes are for hunting, not defensive shotguns.
1:46 into the video, do you even know anything about shotguns? Asking dumb questions.
Thats not the point of a tactical shotgun lol
Wtf you hacker. Always use spray foam to add choke. Low expansion foam works best, and cuts must be made with popsicle stick.....step up your game man stop using metal and use some heavy duty household spray foam.....god dammit
lol 150 dollars of gun smithing on a 120 dollar barrel...
Now it's worth a million bucks
