- GoPro Hero 8 vs GoPro Hero 7 | Worth the upgrade? Is Hypersmooth 2.0 in the GoPro Hero 8 Black actually worth upgrading for over the GoPro Hero 7 Black Hypersmooth 1.0
How about a better mic in the GoPro 8? Or what about Linear mode in 4K resolutions? The GoPro Hero 7 Black could never do that.
Will the fact that the GoPro Hero 8 Black handles highlights a lot better (great example in this video btw) convince you to upgrade from your GoPro 7 Black? Or maybe it's the new high bit rate mode in the GoPro Hero 8 Black
I look at some of the main features in the GoPro Hero 8 Black, including Boost and Hypersmooth 2.0, the amazing 4K Linear mode and struggle with some of the other new features, including the high bit rate mode. The new high bit rate mode allows you to record at 100 Mbps vs the standard 72Mbps. And while the level of detail in this high bit rate mode is slightly, and I mean slightly better in the GoPro Hero 8, everybody is going to struggle to see the difference the Hero 8 high bit rate mode.
This video will show you side by side comparisons between the GoPro Hero 8 Black and the GoPro Hero 7 Black that will help you decide whether or not the Hero 8 is actually worth the upgrade over the Hero 7.
Let me know in the comments what you think of the Hero 8 Black vs the Hero 7 Black footage! Do YOU see the difference?

Great video! From what I’ve seen the high bit rate works best in fast paced, shaky environments, catching more detail in things that are whizzing by at 100kph (Not slow to static movements like most people are testing)
Of course compiling that with the hyper smooth 2.0 you’re bound to have something that looks slightly better but you would be going over your footage with a fine tooth comb at that point!
Hey Steve. Fair point. I’ll go back and re assess. Have you got the 8?
Vic Barry no worries! They just came out yesterday in Australia (and I sell them at my workplace) so I’ll be getting one ASAP!
Steve Welsh epic. Let me know how it works out for you. What are you planning on shooting?
Love your videos. I just got my GoPro 8 for my vlogs while driving around the country. Nice hat!!! Glad to see we’re both NY fans.
Awesome. How are you finding the Hero 8 so far?
Thanks for the review! I’m using the Hero5 now so either is an upgrade for me. The audio seems much better to my ears on the 8.
Have a great day and be safe out there! 👍🏻
Thank you. If you can go for the 8. The 7 is superb, but the 8 is a good step above it, especially on stablization and a slightly better image too
Nice video! I do have to ask, how come you didn’t mention the non-removable lens on the Hero 8? Do you not feel it’s an important feature on an action camera?
Hey David, thanks for the comment. In this video I was more concentrating on the video performance than anything g else. Have you got the 8?
this is one of the most overrated criticisms. A tempered glass sticker will absorb as much shock as an exposed GPH7 lens, so it's actually an upgrade to not have to replace removable lenses, because the stickers are cheaper, easier to replace AND the sealed lens will prevent fogging from water activities. They know what they're doing and this criticism is wayyy overblown.
Doesn't the high bit rate depend on the SD card aswell?
Cheers for the post.
The no case does make it more vulnerable.
The biggy for me is the built in lens. If it scratches, chips or cracks. The whole camera goes back so back to using your old camera or nothing at all till it comes back.
Very true. It’ll have to go in some case at some point.
What problems have you experienced with the 8? I've heard of freezing, crashing and moisture in lens... So far.
Hey there. Had no issues....yet 🤔
@@VicBarry good to hear.
Common gopro issues, though never seen the moisture in lens.
Gopro answers the question for you. Currently they allow you trade any old digital camera (with some terms and conditions) in any condition for €100 off the 8 or €50 off the 7 making the 8 only €329 vs €299 for the 7. Surely a great deal and a no brainier to go for the GoPro Hero 8 Black!
They are really pushing people down the 8 funnel alright.
Unfortunately, it is hard to tell the difference on CZcams, because CZcams compresses videos so much.
Vic, another very informative video. My main fear is still damaging the lens. Have you tried the 8 in a case? Does audio still sound good and is there any distortion if you use the case vs Gopro 7?
Hey Bob. Totally agree on the lens. Haven’t tried it in a case I’m afraid. Although if you’re doing anything actiony as it were it’ll need one. Looking at the mic position I don’t think the case/cage will have any impact on the audio compared to the last GoPro. If that makes sense
@@VicBarry Thanks for the quick reply Vic. I'm going from a Gopro 3 and deciding on a 7 or 8. So I will be starting from scratch as far as cases and add ons go. I just posted a video on my channel and if you look at that video shot with a 3 you'll see how far the Gopros stabilization have evolved.
@@bob2787 Hey Bob, no worries. Absolutely, the difference and improvements on the stabilization is insane!!! What are you planning on shooting?
@@VicBarry Mostly Windsurfing , mountain biking and Diving. What's your thoughts Vic....still on the fence..Looking for the best at raw footage, don't have the time or desire for lots of editing , I like simple..help me make up my mind !!! lol
Heck. Go with the 8. Go for it. Send it back if you think it’s junk 😂👍👍
Go pro hero 8 definitely better but the hero 7 is not a bad camera it's still good
This time last year, the 7 was amazing. Now, it still is 👍👍👍
I could post video from my 7 on youtube and tell everyone its footage from the 8....the masses will believe anything
Cheers Vic, great video. Here is my 2 cents. If you have any gopro older than 6, go for an 8 or settle on a cheaper 7 black. If you have a 7 black......keep it. I just purchased another hero 7 black on sale so I have two 7's now. The 8 really didn't offer anything significantly better than the 7. The fact the 8 wont allow for lens change really concerned me as an action camera. Yes you can buy housings for it, but that just bulks up the camera and adds more layers in front of the lens to lower image quality. Scratch or crack your 8 lens on holidays or a job.......the fun stops there along with any chances of filming with a cracked lens. Hero 8 owners will hate me saying it, but prospective owners are better of getting a cheaper hero 7 black. Save the money for accessories. Gopro hopefully will get their act together for Hero 9.
Totally understandable. Personally I do find the boost mode on the 8 fantastic.
I wonder though are they moving to a new case from here on in. Can’t see them going back to the old case with the lens given they’ve made substantial changes this time round. But it’s too early to call I guess
@@VicBarry Great reply. On the flipside...I am holding in anticipation for a Osmo Pocket 2. I would of purhcased the OP 1 instead of second GPH7B but the focus pump really bugs me.
Yeah. I would have expected “something” about the Osmo pocket 2 at this stage. Majority of my vids are shot with the Osmo pocket and if you stick it into FPV mode you can do manual focus. That said the auto focus has improved pretty well with firmware upgrades
Awesome video!!! Thanks. Do you know if there is a gimbal that is compatible with the 8? Otherwise I might just go with the 7.
Not off the top of my head. To be honest I’m not sure it even needs a gimbal
thats why i got another hero 7 black for use with my g6 gimbal. No 8 has not compatibility.
Subbed,I got the 7 black for Xmas , but there’s a deal on the dual battery charger and spare battery free with every 8 black, I might just have to get one after seeing this review , thanks 👍🏻😄
Awesome. You’re welcome. Thanks for taking some time to watch and comment
The linear versus wide was an interesting observation. The distortion is one of the reasons I've never purchased a GP; I just don't like the look of it so I never bothered.
Hey Ryan, totally agree. I hate the GoPro “look” but now it looks great. Granted, why people buy a GoPro is probably specific enough. Compared to a more linear look from standard cameras if that makes sense?
Super review Vic! And no, I've thought it thru, erred to the iPhone 11 Pro instead. Now off to watch your video on that 😁👍
The 11 Pro is insane for video. Insane. Suffers in low light as to be expected. Let me know what you think Cat
The difference in bitrate is probably going into colour and exposure information. Probably be most different when pushing the footage during colour grading
Can’t say I’ve noticed to be honest. Have you?
Haven’t tried colour grading yet, but I will be testing it.
Same here. How’s the weather up there. It’s kinda hard to grade misery down here right now
Grim. Damp and cold. must be nice and warm down there in the Southern Hemisphere🤣
@@StephenJReid Totally! I didn't need a boat to get to the office this morning and the fact that I didn't have to wear 2 coats!! It's awesome!! I'll have a savage color by Xmas day😆😆😆😆
Thank you for the review Vic! Cheers
No problem! Which do you think is better? 7 or 8?
@@VicBarry Well, I don't think there is any doubt the 8 is better. If those lenses dont get broken or scratched it is a better camera. I think the speed ramp in timewarp is a very interesting feature and hyperlapse is better so... Hero 8 wins it. I also personally like the colors a bit more.
That being said I have a hero 7 and will not be upgrading. It is still good enough for me and, for my use, the main problem it has is still not fixed on the hero 8: Low light is still poor.
Another reason is the fact that in the end, it feels the hero 8 is not much more than a firmware update to the hero 7. Maybe I am being unfair since I know nothing about the hardware of the camera, but it seems it is all about software... and a battery... but then again I could just buy the battery for my hero 7.
I think the only way I would get a Hero 8 is if my hero 7 would brake or be stolen. OR... if some accomplished youtuber with an extra hero 8 on hand would be willing to give it ot me. LOL. I promise if I ever become a famous youtuber I will do the same thing to a new youtuber. EHEHEH.
High bitrate can only really be seen with fast-moving scenes because the compression has to work much harder to compress the video to a lower bitrate. With slow/stationary objects, the compression does not have to work very hard so the 78mbps is plenty
Yeah. Fair point. I’ll go back and reassess. But it should still show a significant difference even without movement. .
What's really funny is when you have the stabilization on it looks like you walk when you're actually running. I did a test with the 7 when it came out an it was the same way lol.
Great comp and review for a prospective buyer . 7 black on any deals up and coming soon would do me as I'd just be doing motorbike vlogs on handlebars and occasional indoor gear reviews , could also mount the 7 elsewhere on the bobber for more views etc .. not gonna use 4k either . So 7nis food for me . One decided . There we are 😀🤞
7 is amazing. Well wear with it dude. Enjoy 👍👍
I have the 8 and not sure if I’m sending it back yet. I have a test for it this weekend and I’ll see after that. I’ll have my 7 blk as backup though during the test lol. The 100 bit is not bad. You just need speed to really see its Benefit.
Hey there, I'm not saying it's bad, it just doesn't make much of a difference. High detailed scenes should be better with the high bit rate option, movement or not movement, but I'll take a look at that over the next few days. What's going to be the deciding factor for you, if you keep the 8 or not?
Vic Barry how well it does a whole day out. I’ll be using the one battery and the other 4 will be from my 7 blk. It’s my sons birthday and we’re doing an event for him. I’ll use the 100 bit rate on some small coasters and see if it’s better in a big enough way. Also want to see if boost is helpful in a significant way over the 7.
I've noticed a big difference in quality the video, both in detail and how it handles exposure.
Hey Stephen, hope you’re well? Yeah. The highlights are handled significantly better than before alright. I’ve noticed a big difference there to be fair
Doing well, thanks Vic!
Having issues with GoPro hero 9 uploading SloMo too movie studio platinum 13 The problem is I filmed in slow mode. It comes with it up with an error render issue, and I don’t know the steps to fix it.
I bought a used go pro 7 black for less than 200 euro with three batteries, monopod stick, twin battery charger and two cases.Great value to be had on the 7 as it's still retailing at 335 euro. Will wait for the 9 to come out,not big on the 8.
Wow. Great deal. Enjoy the 7. It’s a great camera. What’s your plan for the 7?
@@VicBarry F.P.V. drone videos from the race quad...when I get to grip's with it.
I liked the 7 Black I got a couple weeks ago so much I went and bought the 8 too.
Epic stuff. Enjoy your cameras
Vic, have you experienced any freezing or lock ups with the 7 or 8?
Hey Bob, the occasional issue with the 7 where the light wouldn't go off and it froze maybe twice in a 12 month period. So far, no issues with the 8.
@@VicBarry How did you get it to work again? Did you lose all footage ?
Hey Bob. I had to take the battery out and then put it back in. No footage lost. Granted I wasn’t recording at the time so that probably helped
Does the GoPro Hero 8 record stereo audio, or is it now mono? Because, it doesn't seem like the mics are positioned in such a way as to get stereo.
GoPro Hero 8 Black audio is better, but I probably will invest in the media mod.
High bitrate wont make a difference in a static environment.
I have a question if the gopro 7 has the same chip set as the hero 6 and the hero 8 has the same chip set as the 7 them that means the hero 8 has the same chip set as the hero 6.
I am still deciding on what to get hero 7 or the hero 8 what do you recommend for vlogging? Does the hero 8 shake around on the go pro tripod? I am worried that the hero 8 tripod mounts might break off or be too shakey
Either will be good. But the inbuilt mic and stablization is better in the 8. The legs seem solid enough from my experience
@@VicBarry thank you dude I am planning on getting the 8. Do you know how I can plug a mini hdmi into the hero 8? Go pro dont seem to sell the media mod anymore...
ANCARS you can’t plug it in. It needs the media mod for the 8. That’s bizarre that they’re not selling it? Try amazon maybe
@@VicBarry couldn't find it on the go pro website. Amazon arent selling it aswell... the hdmi is a really important feature for me because i would be using it as a webcam sometimes. I prefer the quality and stabilization on the hero 8 but idk what can I do about the hdmi...
Hmmm. That’s strange. Might be worth sending a tweet to GoPro. Alternatively try b&h or adorama
hello Sir, my daughter has a Radio shack camera, the same as a gopro. when she is finished recording her videos and transfers them to her laptop, they wont open. so she has to do all the editing on her phone. do you know what the problem is or how do i fix it? thank you for your help.
Hi there, sorry, I have no idea. It can be a million things, most likely a codec issue from what you've said though.
I was going to buy a Hero 7 Black but got cold feet...
Same chipset so I think mostly firmware updates
Sadly, I agree
I got 8 Yesterday waiting for postman, coming from hero 5 and 4 silver so for me is a huge upgrade 😎
😎😎😎awesome. You’re gonna love your new camera. What are you planning on doing with it?
Vic Barry I have a CZcams channel actually 2 one in Spanish and one in English sharing my experience of living in Europe mainly Germany, reviews and MTB rides.
Awesome. Let me know how you get on with the 8 when it arrives.
Vic Barry Sure will, hows yours doing? Any issues?
So what you said here if I want Linear I should say thank you DJI you made a great Linear 4K camera that replicates a hero 8 . Wait for the Hero 9 with horizontal lock built in ha ha ha .
give me back my hat Vic you ran off with itt great job there.
I'll wait for the 10, which will really be the 9.5 :)
@@VicBarry well this was a hero 7.5 Lol glad you are enjoying the camera. bottom line is you are.
Dji came later than hero 7 so its kinda unfair
It's absolutely fantastic how rich the Hero 7 sound is. The Hero 8 has a horrible sound with no high frequencies. Hypersmooth is better but put your Hero 7 on a gimbal for much less money than buying a crappy Hero 8 with all its flaws and no one will beat that combination. Just not worth upgrading !!!
I’d disagree. The audio on the 8 has a bit more presence. The boost mode is crazy good to be fair. While it’s probably not worth an upgrade for most people, it’s still a phenomenal camera Far from crappy
I'm fpv pilot and the non removable lens is definitively the weakess point of this Hero 8. To scratch the lens and it is game over....or to pay their insurance and pay 100$ in extra to change the camera in case of a len scratch ? It is crazy. It looks like GoPro makes always its best to not propose the best camera for users : before was bad audio quality and to need their extra audio module and now they decided to add a non removable lens....Why they did it ? To obligebuyer to suscribe their insurance. Is it a action cam or a vlogging cam ?? If it is an action cam, the non removable lens is not a mistake, it is a HUGE mistake and will never buy it because of it.
Hey there. Yeah. It’s a very fair point. Wonder would the screen protectors be of much use?
@@VicBarry Good question...for small scratches maybe, for crashs of course not. 2mm or 1.3mm will never prohibit glass to break it when serious crash will occur. Definitively, it's worth upgrade depending on me, they left the action cam world.
8 blacks looks awesome, audio and stabilization….High bitrate - Hero 6 in PT mode have cca 50 000 max
Thanks Pavel. Are you getting it?
@@VicBarry I will buy hero 8 at Christmas maybe :-)
Thank you.

Hey AJ. I don’t think they failed to be honest. I’d still take a GoPro over the DJI Action to be honest. Thanks for watching.
You are getting a Jump Like and Sub xD U need to do more Jump test, i love it !!!!
Thanks so much Andreas

What do you want to film Ashiq?
@@VicBarry i want to start a vloging channel.

It's a $400 software update
Hey Mike, 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 you’re not too far wrong I feel

Hero 7 sounds better. Hero 8 sounds muffled and there's too much low end
Fair point on the sound. I think the 8 has slightly more presence to my ears though.
@@VicBarry I guess. In that case I wouldn't call it an upgrade by any means if its that slight.
Colors and audio better on hero 8
