She was a Victim of "One of Us" that gave her this safe hippie image that she couldn't escape and most fans couldn't get past her BIG hit song, she was actually a blues singer.
@@IanlorenZlistActor "One Of Us" is a fine song, but it really feels like it's from a completely different album. It does sound much more 90s than the rest of the track list too.
I was 14 in 8th grade and I had a horrible flu! All I could listen to was this album and I wrote all the lyrics so I could memorize them… it was a cassette tape… Changed my life!😉
Like when I had to transcribe the Smoking Man's "Life is like a box of chocolates" speech from a DVR recording of X-Files. Now, you can look it up here.
I remember hearing an interview at the time where Joan said she was attempting to create the female version of a raunchy, bluesy Rolling Stones song. Mission accomplished!
Agreed! This is such a great song! She also does an incredible version of Slim Harpo's Shake Your Hips which the Stones made famous on Exile On Main Street. The Live version from a Peak Performance has her and her band just flat out rocking it. The energy is just "Pure Magic"! Here's the link if its not in the cue already... czcams.com/video/3Wd2DveN0R0/video.html
I didn't even realize until today, listening to this again after 25 plus years, that SHE was one of the very first that introduced me to the blues that i love so much today.
@@kevgamble I didn't know that.. I had the cassette way back in the day of this. and the liner notes weren't even there so I didn't know who played bass before he did a great job stepping out from fussion.
In my opinion, based on 80 yeas of listening to music, she owns any song she sings. She does them all better than the original artist. She is number one.
I heard Right Hand Man today on WXPN and could not believe my ears. Joan's voice is something special. It is sort of a mix of Bonnie Raitt with Janis Joplin helping out. The bass player is unbelievable. Sometimes when I listen to a song I listen to certain parts and I like to listen to the bass notes on this song because it gives it soul. Big time. Lenny Tatara
This woman has some killer vocals! I bought this album when it came out and after listening to it, I've been a fan since! Her Early Recordings album was my next obsession and so on lol. She never went mainstream which is a bummer because there are so many people missing out on an amazing artist!
I love it, and I bet most people don't even realize how clever the rhythm of this song is. The way the bass & drums pull this off is fantastic. Probably not since "Turn it On Again" by Genesis have the masses been subjected to such a subversive rhythm in a pop song.
It’s a remix of a Cptn beefheart riff. My uncle Gary Lucas played guitar on the record on Spider Web. He was in beefheart so it was fitting this riff was featured on this song. Only beefheart could compose a riff like that so ahead of its time. Check my fretboard invention 🎸
Saw Joan at the Grafitti Club in Pittburgh in 1996 with this band and it was one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen..Joan and the band were remarkable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lucky to see Joan sing this live, Right Hand Man was the knock out punch of the show. A powerhouse talent and one of the most impressive debut albums of all time. Period.
Sixth Street, SXSW, she had fallen roughed up her face pretty bad. Then her and that awesome band made us not notice! I'll never forget that show as long as I live.
Don’t think Joni needed her right hand man looking and sounding this good. Relish was one of those good from start to finish albums. With much thanks to Mr Bazilian and Rick Chertoff.
I saw this tour and the set up was just like this in the club on Saratoga Springs. Its one of the beat sets I have seen in my life. I also thought she was incredibly beautiful. I didn't age quite as gracefully as Joan. She is a frequent performer in my area but this was EXEPTIONAl.
The Rolling Stones would be proud of this sound ! And the way the rhythm point/counter point changes back and forth the entire song smoothly as silk ... I'm calling it 'sonic aphrodisiac' lol
Joan Osborne KILLS soul music in this absolutely musically astounding video creation of an original song. Joan's presentation of Right Hand Man literally 'hits the cover off the proverbial musical ball'.. Luv ya Joan- Doug
Joan Osborne is like a sibling in my mind. Imagine growing up with her and surrounded by her talent and her band of talented musicians. I can learn so much from her and being musically influenced all my life that I can use as models to my own music artistry as a singer. She’s fantastic! Phenomenal!
The Intro is just so cacthy I cannot get this song out of my head :)this comment is just made from something i see with human eyes,I also see a luminous being of amber familiar light .
Dear Ms. Osborne, Without a doubt - your artistry is so under-rated and its a real shame. I simply love this tune because its so raw, pure and honest. I wish you all the best and keep that talent flowing !
I love that this song is in 7/4. It flows much more smoothly than a lot of odd-meter songs (the smooth bass line helps). Oh yeah, and Joan is hot and a great singer. ;)
I used to DJ at an expat bar in Seoul on Friday nights and I played this song early in the evening to get people primed and ready to dance the night away.
She is such an underrated artist. This has been a favorite of mine since the 90’s. She deserves a whole lot more recognition than she’s revived.
i like you❤
She certainly is.
I can't understand why Joan Osborne never got more attention than she did. She has such a powerful, bluesy voice and she knows how to use it.
Também não sei porquê!
This didn't get enough love back in the day. The very definition of a banger.

That is always what I thought. This could have been on Sticky Fingers no problem
I saw that same interview and I agree feel in love with the song

Omg, I miss the 90's and the fashion. This video rules. I probably haven't seen it since '96. I was obsessed with this album.
I’m still obsessed
@@Mika_glover Joan is incredible and still making great music. I will always love her.
The c.d. paper had a funky smell to it each c.d that I bought of hers the relish one. Love her music 🎶
This song has one of the best bass lines ever
@Charles Peterson The bass player is killing it!
Played by the stellar Mark Egan, who has mostly played in jazz fusion but really delivered the goods on this album

i just saw joan with trigger hippy this past weekend. she still got it folks.
That voice... so smooth, yet raunchy. Yeah, she has what it takes.
I've always loved this song. It reminds me of late 60s Stones.
Damn...she was/is freaking great. What a voice.
Scott Waszak she's old now
Those vocals have been overlooked for way too long. She is right up there with Janis Joplin and Gladys Knight.
she better, yo.
I have to agree. Wicked.
Absolutely

THIS is the tune that compelled me to buy the Relish cd.
Me also.
4/4 drumming behind a 7/4 beat. Genius.
Who is he?Looks a bit like Jim Keltner.
I think it's Rick Chertoff, who produced the album. Andy Kravitz drummed on the song with additional percussion by Chertoff.
That's the late, great, Charlie Quintana (R.I.P.) playing the drums in this video.

Way better than "If God was one of us" in my humble opinion.
That VOICE! - always LOVED this song!
Still have the Relish CD in my car
Love this woman’s vocals
Janis Joplin, Joss Stone, Joan Osborne ~ My Three J’s ✌🏻😎☮️
She is so damn gorgeous here!!!
The last line should be "If he can't fix it gonna find a Real man". IMHO. I LOVE her!!

still, after all these years.. my theme song.
Long live Joan!
It just can't get any hotter than Joan in this video.
And her band rocks!
Relish is a masterpiece of an album
Gorgeous full figured woman rocking down,,DAMN
My girl....! You're my past,my present and my future.
My vote for best singer and song of the nineties. Love Joan's voice, this song and that saxophone too
This video & this tune is DRIPPIING!!
Whose here in 2021! Still as great as it was in high highschool❤
April 2 2022 no idea why I'm here though.
Now THAT is Joan Osborne. Hell yeah.
Don’t think Joni needed her right hand man looking and sounding this good. Relish was one of those good from start to finish albums. With much thanks to Mr Bazilian and Rick Chertoff.
Found my old cd and have been listening to fit or the past 2 weeks. She is so great.
Relish is such a great album. Not a bad song on it and One of Us a classic song.
She knows exactly what she's doing to me.
The song is genius, her voice is genius. SHE is genius!!
I re-winded just to comment. I fucking love this song.

All the years later, and this track still kicks me right in the ass.

Good band.But Joan,oh my.What a singer ,what a girl.
Sings the way its supposed to feel!...
What a voice!
Few of the female artists can hold a candle to Joan. Have you heard her soul albums....oh man...
Lordy, lordy the way she moves her hips - It's mesmerizing. Should have a warning lable.
I fully agree! Oh my! So sexy!
You two don't get out much do you? Check out the girl in the old video hang on sloopy
I get plenty sir!
the bass was the best when I used to smoke weed I would blast this song and chill playing it over and over.
The Rolling Stones would be proud of this sound ! And the way the rhythm point/counter point changes back and forth the entire song smoothly as silk ... I'm calling it 'sonic aphrodisiac' lol
I love Joan Osborne. I especially love her hair. I want to make myself real small and jump in.
+Ron Kelley LOL
yyyup!
This song takes me back to 8th grade memories.
I remember jamming to this on the way to school in the 90’s she so deserved a bigger career than being a 1 hit wonder
this is still the sexiest thing ever.
+Ronald Sperrazza i know right?!
Only competition or companion (IMO) is the contemporary song by Paula Cole - "Feelin' Love."

I have to agree.
I am lookin' for MY Right Hand Man!
this song takes me back to when I moved to Columbus, Ohio.......some crazy times. love the song.
something about that voice in this song.

It's been generally accepted that plumbers are the best lovers.

They don't create songs even in the same zip code as songs like this anymore.
Her vocal performance on this song = one of rock music's finest moments.
24 yrs. ago. Man, does time fly. I bought Relish because of One of Us, but, this was the gem of the album.
This is the sexiest song/video ever!!
Scott, you are still my right hand man. Miss you everyday, 12/20/09. Love, the wife
What a voice! What a woman! Never heard anything better in my life!

Simply , One of the greatest Rock and Roll Songs and Video , of all time ! H.
So underrated. Top 5 song of the 1990s (if not top 3).
Such a beautiful lady isn’t she?

And the drums stay in 4/4 so the beat turns around every measure. Takes an amazing band to keep that from falling apart.
Still a great tune and so so beautiful in 2020....
Man I used to dash my lungs out to this yeeeeeeears ago
Holy shit what a voice!
Love the alter affects!!! Love you Joan Osborne!!!
