My mum told me the name matatu came from 30 cents coz they used to be charged 30 cents and the touts would shout ( Mang'otore matatú... matatú) to attract customers... meaning 30 cents in kikuyu or mapeni tatu in kiswahili. Hope young generation have learnt too😂😂. On racing cars, just check Safari rally 2022.

Matatus are simply cheap public transportation and not party buses per se. We use them to go to work, school and even on the way to hospital. The creative designs and entertainment are solely to attract customers. They are privately owned and loosely regulated which allows for diversity of design and 'pimping'.

The matatus are endless. There are available on different routes. It is a lucrative business for the owners. We do have shows where the new matatus oth new designs are showcased. This culture is authentic and has provided alot of jobs for young artists, technicians and drivers who would otherwise be unemployed. It is a culture something we appreciate and are very proud of as kenyans. As an investor, to purchase a fully decked out matatu, you can end up spending close to $100k or more. If you come to Kenya, you have to experience travelling in a decked out matatu. It's awesome. You would love it.

1:34 it's not a party bus in kenya, the reason why is most people prefer these decked out busses for the service and the reason why they are out at night is cause the other common buses end service before most late nighters are out of the city CBD so if you're heading home, it might be the only means of transport home.

We have different routes/hoods here the owner registers his nganya under a Saccos (a body regulates the matatus operations in one route. Also the matatu can not operate on another route except the one it has been registered to operate. You find that we have over 200 Saccos each Saccos unleashing their beasts/nganyas/matatus. You can find a route having more than 5 Saccos under which the matatus operate. Also 1 Sacco can have 200 matatus doesn't have to be a specific number. We also have matatus that are very simple and quiet without the loud music depending on one's preference. All these operating under one Sacco.
