- This video for Elton’s only principally instrumental single was shot on the set of the Australian music television show Countdown and broadcast on December 1978. Elton explains in his autobiography ‘Me’ that the song was named after Guy Burchett, a 17 year-old messenger boy for his company who had died in a motorcycle crash “at virtually the same time I was writing the song.” Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour band member Ray Cooper can be heard playing wind chimes and shakers on the track.

Elton John - Song For Guy
/ eltonjohn
My mum was diagnosed with early onset dementia this year, age 56 . Doesn’t know me anymore, doesn’t recognise me . I used to listen to this song in my early twenties when I was stressed or worried, or scared - gave me comfort . Six weeks ago I found a cassette tape of my mum’s titled ‘relaxation’ - same song, same age - she would have been early 20s too. Listen to it now when I miss my mum, makes me feel she’s still with me in some sense .
Keep playing it for her.
❤😢
May her soul rest in piece
This is not music; it's art
Simmmm😊
Am 65 years old.....and still listing to this song. Beautiful ❤️
me too in 64 i met elton when this came out i was a chef and i cooked for him he signed me the 7" single of this your right beautiful song
This is by far my favorite Elton John track. At almost 65 yrs old, it still gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes.....
Agree

I just listened to this for the first time in many years and the hair on my arms stood up. Exquisite song.
Too many great songs to make a choice for me. I saw him at 16 (first concert) and many more times. The Yellow Brick Road tour was special.
im 53, his best for me to, truely clasic, cheers Mike Morgan
This was played at my Dad's funeral in 1997, he loved it so much.
Elton John is an Icon. This Song is so wonderfuĺl, fantastisch and real Lifestyle ❤❤ Bravour.
Greetings from germany❤
We played it at my dads funeral too, he tried to find the 7inch record of the song about two weeks before he died, he found it at a local record shop, then he was killed by a drunk driver, it breaks my heart every time I hear it but I cannot hear it enough, strange as it may seem.
Cómo supo usted que le encanto?
they will play it at my funeral as well. But they dont know it yet haha
A way to remind of us that "life isn't everything..."
When may grandmother died with 56, i had 8 years old. After the funeral, i entered in the room of my uncle to take a book off his shelf. When i opened the door, i saw him sit in his armachair with eyes closed listenning a piano song. After many years, i started to like Elton John's music. One day, i was running around a big lake in the city where my grandmother once lived and in some new coffee shop this song was playing. I entered, bought a bottle of water and asked the attendant which song was that. Song For a Guy, he said.
I lost my mother a couple of months ago, and this is exactly what I need to hear right now
So sorry for your loss...
Come ti capisco amico mio... Stessa cosa...🙏❤️🌹
My Mom absolutely loved this beautiful piece of music, she would always ask me to play it for her on the piano.
I played it at her funeral service, as I knew the joy it always brought her and to express my appreciation for the loved she shared with me for music. 💕
That must have been very emotional for all who attended, that's a lovely send off for your mum 👍
dd
This is an absolutely beautiful song it was nice that this was played at your mother's service.godbless
Amazing
Beautiful 🙌🏻
58 years old and this masterpiece still moves me and the reason behind why Elton wrote this makes me sadder even more. This song touches my soul❤
Same for me❤😢
I delivered newspapers in my early teens and struck up a friendship with another delivery boy. Our paths used to cross in the mornings when we collected our delivery loads. The other lad also had a motorbike which he cherished. Our friendship was brief as one day when I went to collect my delivery the owner of the newsagent informed that this lad had died the night before in a motor bike crash. Though I was upset it didn't register too deeply at the time but over the years I think of him from time to time and wonder how his life would have panned out if he was still alive and how unfair it was that his life was cut so short. This was 50 odd years ago and I still think of him from time to time.
1978 I was 9 years old, I was sound asleep and in the distance this song woke me up and I felt like floating in the clouds, I still have that feeling every time I hear it
what a lovely description 👌👌
Cool
How beautiful. I am your age and also love this masterpiece
What a lovely memory x
This man is still performing after 60 years. One of the greatest artist ever. This is one of his best numbers😢❤
Where the ebony and ivory do the talking. A masterpiece!
For those who didn’t have time to read the description and wondering who Guy was, he was a motorbike messenger who Elton knew. When Guy was killed in a motorbike accident Elton dedicated this song to him.
Actually "Guy" was a messenger boy from his office "rocket records", he dies in a motorbike accident in the exactly same time elton compose this beautiful melody.
@@Jordan6002 In 1983 I met Peter Powell who was a DJ on the TV show Top of the Pops. He told me about the story behind the song and ironically shortly after that I read in the newspapers that a delivery person in his office had also passed away so to me song has double meaning.
@@Jordan6002 Actually Guy was a motorcycle and exploded after a messenger hit him while holding an Elton John record in his hand.
Elton dedicated the song to Guy because Guy died in the same night, in which Elton wrote this song.
It's obvious listening to the song that Elton loved this guy. Surely?
As a heavy metal fan, I've never bothered to listen to this type of music, but I must admit, Elton John was a genius in his own right. This track is quite moving and a great tribute to the lad who died. Some of his early stuff was really good and I respect the comments of those who have lost loved ones. It's great that a song can do so much to uplift the soul and bring back those memories.
Thanks Elton
Bill
I had a tape with both sides recorded with this number solely. In 1979 or 1980 i was sailing with my yachtclub across waters between Sealand and Lolland, Denmark and the tape was rolling. The music fell in sync with the waves, so it was a pure bliss.
This song was too beautiful and a beautiful tribute he paid to the deceased boy.

"Song For Guy" shows an introspective, thoughtful Elton, obviously reflecting on his own mortality.
Elton didn’t even need to sing in order for a hit song. It was when the lyrics came in that this song became an instant classic. Elton John Is Awesome!
So underplayed, this is a master piece
when just 3 words are enough to say it all... "Life Isn't everything"
This song really hits after losing a friend :(
🙏🙏🙏
For an instrumental track, it packs a hefty emotional punch. I was floored by it when it first came out in 1978, and 45 years later it still brings a lump to my throat every time I hear it. ❤
True, very emotional.
I recently lost a good friend this was played at his funeral - so relevant to him 😊
One of my favourite songs af all and, in my opinion, Elton's best one!
Many thanks to my dad who made me discover it almost 40 years ago.
This is beautiful but listen to ' someone saved my life tonight ' ❤
One of the purest expressions of human's heart. I will always think about my father who's passed away. Probably one of the most beautiful proof of human race. Only a genius could write this song. It's immortal, and will ever touch my soul, a spiritual enchantment.
Gregorian chant?
I agree. It's hard to express but there is a purity and purpose to this piece that speaks straight to the soul.
May be it is spiritually enchanting. In late 70s this tune was released. I've always felt it a melancholy tune with Elton singing 'life isn't everything', which I thought was about someone who had died - didn't know about the story until now. Strange of the few pop records my mum bought, somehow she bought this and I'd play it repeatedly. So it's very special to me. Thanks. ♥️
💔🖤💔
I was nine years old, in the 70s, we were returning from the airport where we had said goodbye to a dear uncle and on the radio this song played that marked me forever. My uncle died a few days later. That sound, for me, has a meaning of farewell, of loss of a dear person.
So sorry for your loss
I'm so thankful I have lived during Elton's lifetime. His music has thrilled me for decades, and seeing him in concert was a joy-filled experience.
Watching The Crown..had to listen to this beautiful song...lyrics are..."Life...isn't everything" Elton was a good friend of Princess Di.
Same. It’s a good song isn’t it
I'm here because of The Crown ... This song is magnificent .... I like it so, so much !!!
Came here after watching the dance scene in The Crown, too! lol
Me too. Makes me cry.
Had no idea it was by Elton John. This season of The Crown is profoundly sad. Poor Diana
A song for guy , a song for everyone.
Elton’s combination and use of rhythm, accenting and dynamics in his music are second to none.
First Elton John Album I bought "Single Man:, in 1997 I met him at his club living in Atlanta GA and played this, how humble to allow ME to play his song...
I’m not Elton john fan, it’s not that I don’t realise how talented he is , it’s not my type of music but this is a masterpiece of music , guaranteed to make me cry somehow. When I learned who guy was , it made sense to me why I cry. I can guess that this music , this track could mean an awful lot to a lot of people. ❤️.
A lot of people don't realize what a genius he is along with his depth of catalogue because he usually plays the "hits" or well known songs that everyone knows which is a travesty really as a lot of his lessor known songs are even better
yes, it does
This was a big hit -- in the UK, at least!
Omg !! My favorite song by Elton John. Just Awesome !! Brazil here. 🇧🇷❤
Hello Brazil. By far one of my favourite tracks by Elton
👍🇦🇺
A long time ago, I was 4 or 5 at the skating ring in France, my big sister was iceskating on this song in competition. A memory of sheer beauty
What a song!!!
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Altough Elton was really going through bad times during late 70s - mid 80s he still made really good songs.
"Life isn't everything"
He got better in the eighties!
So did other greats, like Sergei Rachmaninoff!

Always loved it yrs ago, but forgot about it, so beautiful
Got to admire and give the man praise for his gift of song. One of the best without a shadow of doubt.
I found this song same time, when doctors said my husband he has cancer. I listened this song very often because it made in my soul feeling all will be OK. I felt big hope from this song. Unfortunately my husband died. When i held him hand and i saw him last breath a I heard last beat him heart. This song was in my head.
I love this just as much now as I did when it came out...still get goose pimples....reminds me of my parents and family at Xmas in 79...
Synrhesiser break in this track is beautiful. Hits the sweet spot in your emotions. Gorgeous track.
Last year, back in April, me and the family made the sad decision to say goodbye to our springer spaniel called Oscar. Later that evening I listened to this song; I can’t ever listen to this song again without thinking of him.
A masterpiece.
This was a song I used to waltz to with my man 45 years ago.And still to this day when I hear it play I stop and think of Danny.💖💖💖💖
That’s beautiful..💙
Dear friend Danny died recently. Loved him dearly
His widow and I reminisced about him tonight. Sad but cathartic. All the best from 🇦🇺
This guy has a very sad life ...wird parents....I love him❤😢
What a beautiful song, the words, "Life, isn't everything" speaks volumes. It tells us that as much as we cherish life, even with our personal pain, there is something greater, to hope for, to believe in. Sometimes a song with its simple message is meant to touch us the most.
I’m reading his autobiography and was just reading the part where he talks about this song. This is my first time hearing it. Elton is so talented. I hope I’m able to finally see him next year!
I'm doing the same thing!
Just........ Beautiful.......,...... No words to express.....
One of the best Elton John songs. I'm really happy that they uploaded videoclip for it.
This song brings me peace of mind. It is one of my favorites and like some other users I am almost 60 but it still touches me in a special way.
Elton John, even at the hardest times, he overcomes ! Born to win. Sir Elton John, the soundtrack of my entire life since 1972. Blessings to him!
This is for me his best song, i love it, says so much yet it say nothing in words, takes me back Class song Class person
The best Elton's instrumetal song. Another great hit from "single man" was "part time love".
I loved "shooting star" ☺️
A truly warm guy, gifted beyond measure. To hear his work is living forever in Springtime
1978... great, i was 20 years old, I was listening to this melody on repeat. Thanks Elton..
All kindred spirits here after the Crown, searching for this incredible almost forgotten masterpiece. I did not know Elton John did this one, I was 7 years old at that time and heard it often on the radio. Nostalgia at its best. Being part of the Commonwealth, most UK pop culture and this song was big In South Africa, and then sanctions came along several years later..The Crown did a magnificent job showing that story.
I thought it was Roxy Music to be
honest until I shazzamed it 😱
Shocked to realise this haunting but eloquent masterpiece was Elton 😱
Love it but personally don’t think it needed any vocals on it at all.
But still an inspiring piece 💯
i thought it was Jean-Michel Jarre until i saw it on The Crown.
Beautiful song and the older it gets the more beautiful it becomes.
couldn't agree more

I wish he would do more instrumentals. I love them especially when they are this beautiful. The three that are on The Diving Board are beautiful too. Elton is the best 🎵🎼🎹❤️
On the album Ice on Fire there's a song called "The Man Who Never Died", it has the same feeling to this song.
Really does showcase that's he's more than just a great pop artist: he's a brilliant composer and player.
Blue Moves has 3 instrumentals I believe, "Your Starter For...", "Out Of The Blue" and "Theme From A Non-Existent TV Series".
Fantastic and touching song by far in my humble opinion Eltons best song😢
Such a Great and TIMELESS MUSIC from the Genius, Mr Elton John
Since I was young, I really love the song melody contrast between the calm, down to earth sequence and the then ethereal, heavenly and magic part. It just really drive our state of mind into putting our entire life memories into perspective.
Eltons best piece of work❤
Such a sad song brings me to tears every time, the swirling synth is both beautiful and surreal, a 70s time capsule masterpiece
Well said 👍
☺️❤️ “life isn’t everything”
This song brings back some memories. Such a beautiful tune! ❤
It's never coming back, but it was beautiful at the time.
A wonderful song for life.....awesome

I have recently got into buying vinyls as I was gifted with a turntable for my birthday, and a few weeks ago, while on the hunt for something new to buy, I came across Elton's album A Single Man, and immediately bought it. Listened to it during the evening and this song stood out to me the most, and has become probably one of my favourite Elton songs of all time, this album is really a gem and I am really glad I found it.
My mum wanted this to be played at her funeral. It's forever her song now.
So sorry for your loss.....

Lindíssima!
SONG FOR GUY 💜
My favourite Elton John song. Awesome, hair standing on end type tune. X
Never heard this until The Crown. Read it was a big hit outside of the U.S. but the record company didn't think an instrumental would be a hit in the states! Love it!
So much incredible music never made it to "the radio". Never understood their logic. Music lovers were cheated.
Sadly we in the USA were robbed, incredibly beautiful music is appreciated universally.
We listened to this song in Canada. Canadians were and still are huge fans of Elton. We were also big fans of Kate Bush - another amazing British artist that did far better here than in the US.
@@singtweetypie Elton did ok in the us with 9 no 1s and 27 top 10 hits
@@gregclarke7130 Of course he did. I was not inferring whatsoever that he was not a huge star in the US. The original comment was that many were hearing this song for the first time through a TV series. That was not the case here in Canada.
Given our connection as a Commonwealth country with a Queen, we have always tended to adopt all things British, including musical artists. However, Elton John has also spent an exceptional amount of time in Canada - both living and performing. Having a Canadian husband, he has also has family here.
Triple good, people who won't leave the soul have to be there, one twice way or another, beautiful this is...
nao me canso de ouvir essa música, ela me faz sonhar, viajar, me acalma, me deixa um pouco nostálgica mais amo. Nao se faz mais músicas como antigamente.❤❤❤❤❤
