Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to show how you've adapted these two systems! I have been using Bullet Journals since 2016, mostly in A5 notebooks. For 2019 I want to try the A6 size and have been considering the classic Hobonichi Techo but couldn't see how to accommodate collections, notes, trackers, etc. You have definitely given me something to think about.

This was so helpful! I bought a Hobonichi Cousin for grad school and my assistantship, but then I took the semester off, so I found myself unsure of how I was going to use it. I also don’t use the daily pages on the correct dates-I just go to the next available page. Seeing how you had it all laid out has given me ideas of how to structure my planner. Thank you!

Thank you as I never used my cousin to it's full potential. I have ordered my 2018 and will be using it as bullet journaling mostly for work. I use the Weeks only for my personal ( the size is perfect to carry in my purse). I love to doodle and art Journaling in my Techo. It's the paper and layouts that makes me use the Hobonichi's. This will be start of my 4th year and I grow and change the uses each year🌹
Hi Pamela! You know, the funny thing is... I have heard people who love the hobonichi because of the paper and people who hate the hobonichi because of the paper. Tomoe River paper seems to divide people into two camps! I'm so tempted to get the Weeks, but then because I currently use my Cousin for both personal and work, it doesn't seem to make sense to buy both the Weeks and Cousin. What do you record in your Weeks, if you don't mind telling me? =)
I just switched to an A6 Day Free from the original and even though I knew the yearly index pages could be used as an index for some reason it hadn't actually connected for me that I could use that section that way! Now I won't have to flip around wondering where I put that one note! I really appreciate your functional planning videos. I love deco but seeing how someone uses the planner in a functional way really helps me use it more efficiently.
Lovely to see how you use the Hobonichi. I use it pretty much the same way. I use the daily pages also to make to do lists and I list them in the index. And I use the second 6months on two pages as a tracker pages. I put some masking tape over the monthly headers and put in the current months and added extra days where needed. On top I write the things I want to track. I cross them of in the box of the day when I did.
Hi Martine! That sounds like such a creative way to deal with tracking! I used to use the yearly index pages to track my weight and blood pressure in the Hobo original but I never thought to put masking tape and change the current months... Thanks for sharing that =)

I actually use the Seven Seas as a sketchbook, but I have a Stalogy365 (a Fauxbonichi?) that I'm using as a bullet journal. I LOVE the flexibility of the bullet journal (though having to draw out all my weekly pages can be a bit of a pain because I have to stay on top of it.) So far, though, I really like that I can completely customize it. For example, I have a 4-day work week so I can set up my pages for that in a way that I can't with a pre-dated calendar. Then it gives me the space to also write down all my meetings and tasks. (And I haven't yet run out of room, because I can capture overflow in my future logs.) I do look forward to seeing how you use your Hobonichi, though, because it gives me lots of ideas! (Whoa--sorry for the novel. Clearly I can talk planners for a very long time! LOL)

I love this and I wish this was the first one video I watched! Certainly before falling in love with hobo, spent tooooo much on fancy bulky covers and did not trust my gut to stay with A5 cousin (avec )which I tried 2018 July-Dec. Then half way discovered and wanted to try the simple rapid bojo. Thank you so much for your creative/logical journal journaling.

Yes the Avec is my new best friend! I've been using the daily pages for my work notes and the weekly to keep track of my personal schedule and to-dos as you have in the video. It's really working for me not having to have two different notebooks for my work and personal notes. Haven't figured out how I want to use the index area yet still deciding on that one.
I use the index the same way! In the past I always used to buy old diaries that were on sale after the year was advanced to use them as notebooks with the annual view as index pages. And the Hobonichi cousin offers to combine this with an actual planning tool!
Wow! That is an amazing use of old diaries! Now I feel tempted to buy a bunch of old diaries :D Do you still do this now?
I am a bit more picky with paper I want to write on now, so I would no longer buy super cheap old diaries, but when I come across a good daily diary reduced to a point that is is cheaper than a notebook of the same quality, then I always buy them for this. You can also use them for recipes and then put the title of the dish in the annual view!
Thank you for the tip! I'll be sure to keep a look out for old diaries in the stationery shop. I've been banning myself from stationery shops because I am hoarding more than 60 unused notebooks. But... maybe I'll let myself buy just one...? =p
Awesome video! Some really original and creative ways to use the Hobonichi. I like how it's become almost a hybrid. I love my Hobonichi but I'm also intrigued by bullet journaling so this is a great way to satisfy both! Look forward to more videos and flip through!!

Hi Kimberly! Yeah... I'm glad I started bullet journaling first instead of using a preprinted planner. That allowed me to give myself permission to change things up when things don't work for me! =D I now love the Hobonichi. But I've got the planner itch... I'm thinking if other planners would work out well for me... (No, Yukiko! Stop spending money on planners!!!)

I used an A6 Hobonichi in 2016 and 2017 and decided to try bullet journaling in 2018. I miss the structure of the Hobonichi and I'm planning on using a Hobonichi Cousin Avec in 2019. I enjoyed your video.

Vegan Organizer was the reason I fell in love with Hobonichi. She is my favorite utilitarian user/productive planner of the Hobonichi (though her pages of the Hobonichi Cousin are beautifully simplistic) on CZcams.
Humblechan is one of my favorites for a decorated Hobonichi (though I never decorate I still love watching her videos on her process and handwriting).
Year Long Life doesn't make as many videos as she use to but I love her videos and got some great ideas which I still use for tracking my time in a very minimalist way.
Studyign (purpose spelling error as she is student with a sense of humor) is a Bujo user who used the Hobonichi back in 2016 and use to do plan with me videos and I enjoyed watching them.
I think out of all the communities on CZcams, the planner community is the most kind. Some of CZcams is so negative but the planner people are generally so supportive so you found a good group of people to be amongst. Good luck with your channel and I'm looking forward to your future videos.
I adore the Vegan Organizer. She's also the reason I picked up the Hobonichi. I've watched every single Hobonichi video she's got (and others as well). Yukiko Sakamura, I did consider the Mega Weeks, but decided against it because although I have a few collections in there, I have not used a large enough percentage to require the Mega. But a silver glitter is on its way to me!
A silver glitter! Very professional looking. I am personally torn between the Coral Pink Mega Weeks and the Merry Everyday to You Normal Weeks. I've been told I come across as too "masculine" and "aggressive". HAHAHA. Maybe using a cutesy planner will soften my image? =P

I'm glad I saw this video. I've been using a Hobonichi cousin for two months and while I love it I've been considering changing to Bullet Journaling instead, maybe because I like the size better. I had a cheap notebook and got as far as setting it up and then gave up. Now after seeing your video I'm back to loving my Hobonichi again and will start implementing some of your ideas such as the index, and tasks portions. I now will keep my fingers crossed that someday the actual book may be smaller... thanks again.
Yeah, the size can be intimidating! I have an AVEC instead of the full Cousin because it can be quite heavy to carry around. I'm not sure I'd want a B6 size though--that might be too small... But I can't tell until Hobonichi comes up with it! =D

Yay! =) I also don't use the pages once a day, but when I want to work a personal problem out, I usually take 10 pages at a time. It all works out in the end =)

Thank you for watching, Paige! Hm, not everyone likes the Hobonichi... The biggest complaint people have about the Hobonichi is the paper--the ghosting and the dry time. So, if you think that might be an issue, you might want to try getting a sample of tomoe river paper from Nanami Paper (USD$3, free shipping) before you commit to a Hobonichi. =)

Wow!!! Okay, this is going to be kinda long. First, I love your video! Useful and practical and straight to the point, yet still so nice to watch. So thank you! Your layouts are really really inspiring! I've recently bought a planner similar to the Hobonichi and I was still lost until I watched your video. The way you use it, the dailies, monthlies, the index... Everything is so brilliant! Truly genius. It's getting late here, but I'll definitely try out some of your layout in my planner first thing in the morning! You are so organized it's incredible. I'm fascinated. I just found your Instagram account, then came here, and... Goals. That's the word. You're everything I aspire to be!!! And then I found out you're a Psychology researcher! SPSS, ANOVA, analysis... I was reading about those in your Hobonichi and in your posts and I was getting more and more excited! I'm honestly so happy right now, so glad I found your accounts!!! I want to be a researcher too!!! I'm a Psychology undergraduate now, still have two more years to go until I graduate. I became part of a research lab in my university last year and since then I realized this is what I want to do with my life, with my future. I don't want to bother you, and don't want to sound too invasive but.. What do you study? In my lab I've helped Doctorate students with their researchs, mostly on resilience in same sex families. We also study about other things there! It's a lab focused on the systemic view. But I'm also very interested in other Psychological areas. I'm sorry this got too long, I'm just so excited right now! Hi! Yes, there is a great deal of ghosting and smearing which can be annoying. There is no bleedthrough if you use water-based inks. Here is a series I made about factors to think about when getting a Hobonichi that you might find helpful: czcams.com/video/0_dhwRp0Xfk/video.html

Exactly what I used to do in my hobonichi. Now in a Leuchturm doing te bullet journal there but I miss my hobo soooo much. I'm sure I will return eventually. I have 2018 set up in an Enigma because I missed Tomoe River Paper so much. We shall see. Loved your set up.
Haha, I went from bullet journaling to Hobonichi and I don't think I'd ever return to drawing my own layouts from scratch. It just takes too much time! How do you like your Engima? I have an A6 enigma that I cannot bear to use because the paper is so nice!
I enjoyed this video, Yukiko! I have a question, and I asked this of Kara, too. I would like to hear both perspectives:What is the best way to obtain translations for the writings in the notebooks, to understand what is written in Japanese on the different pages?
Hi Liliana! I would suggest buying the English Hobonichi techo. That has the official translation. Unfortunately, the English planner only comes in A6 size, and the layout looks slightly different from the Japanese version. But if you're okay with that, then that's the best way to go =)
Happy New Year 2018! I went with the A5 size, I may somehow have to copy and paste to translate! I know the phrases are supposed to be inspirational and encouraging.

Amanda (Amanda's Favourites) recommended you to ask the following question: I am really impressed by the paper quality of Hobonichi Techo Cousin. It tremendously benefits my handwritting, I believe. I know that they use tomeo river paper- so I ordered plain notebooks from MD who use this sort of paper, but none of them uses this thin and smooth one like the Hobonichi Techo Cousin. Do you know where I can get plain notebooks with ecaxt the same paper?

Hi Janette, there are three places I know that sell tomoe river paper. One is Taroko Shop on etsy (www.etsy.com/sg-en/shop/TarokoShop), which uses slightly thicker tomoe river paper than what Hobonichi uses. This means that there is less ghosting than Hobonichi. The tomoe river paper are the enigma books. The mystique books are not tomoe river paper. If in doubt, email the shop owner, Steven. The other place I have ordered from is Nanami Seven Seas (www.nanamipaper.com/categories/seven-seas-tomoe-river-paper.html). The shipping cost is crazy, though, so I don't really recommend it for people outside of the US. Finally, there is Hippo Noto (hipponoto.com/collections/frontpage) which also uses thicker tomoe river paper. However, I have never used Hippo Noto, so I cannot say anything about the quality. Good luck getting the notebooks!

Love your ways of using hobo!! It is excatly what l want to write todos and keep tracking my daily life, though it's difficult for me to sqeeze my writing between these lines...... I've been using hobo for more than 4 years, but l'm still optimizing my notebook combinations. Thank you for your reply. The following is my notebook combinations this year, but I want to change the uses next year.
- I use A6 to write to do lists and track my time by using the timetable on the corresponding day.
I use monthly page to remind me of exams and assignments/projects' due date.
Because A6 is small and convenient to carry with.
However, with more and more stuffs to do, sometimes there's no space for me to write in a single daily page.
Besides, it's difficult for me to keep tracking the process of the project. For example, I need to do my homework. I need to take steps to finish it in a week, and I also need to discuss my homework with my tutor as a part of the homework marking in the next week( I need to prepare for the discussion ). After a few days, I need to check the feedback from my tutor......
- I use A5 basically as a diary.
I use monthly page to remind me of some life routines, such as wash clothes and clean the house.
However, I waste the weekly pages and the excellent timetables.
Next year, I also want to record my daily spending and recipes......

Is it necessary to record life and study/work separately? Will your choose different notebooks for different aspects, why or why not?
How do you keep tracking the process of the project?

What pen do you use with your Hobo Cousin?
I currently use a pilot metropolitan (white tiger), but I swapped out the nib for a pilot kakuno fine nib (because the kakuno fine nib is finer than the pilot metropolitan fine nib, my inks dry faster). I use Noodler's Heart of Darkness ink with my pilot metropolitan. If you don't want to use a fountain pen, fineliners work well in the Hobonichi (although the tip gets blunt over time). Other people also use ballpoint pens or pencil on the Hobonichi, but I don't like the effect. Finally, in my opinion, gel pens do the worst (not counting oil based markers). It takes like 30-50seconds for some of my gels to dry, even then, they don't dry very well leading to a great deal of smudging. Hope that helps!

Hello! Like so many others have commented, I have had a light bulb go on for me after seeing your video; and my HOBONICHI Cousin is on the way! I have been Bullet Journaling for nearly 2 years now. But like you have had enough of drawing calendars. As you are Bullet Journaler too, I understand that you simply use the next available daily page for your collections and use the "date" as a page numbering system in the Calendex. (Brilliant!) QUESTION for you: I noticed that in the 2018 Cousin, there is a lined page before each month of daily pages, titled "Remember This". This page is stumping me because it is formatted differently than the Daily pages. In addition, it does not have a "date" I can use to reference the collection. Can you please tell me how do you use the 12 "Remember This" pages?
Hello! I'm very glad that you found the video helpful. I don't actually use the 12 Remember This pages. However, here are three recommendations: 1) as index pages. If you don't want to flip all the way to the front to use the yearly index or you've used those for other things, you can use these as index pages to index important monthly pages. 2) as dashboards. Use washi tape to decorate these pages and write down a quote to remember for that month (e.g., "SMILE! TODAY IS AN AWESOME DAY!" (or something similar).. 3. Write down big projects for the month or monthly tasks so you know what projects you're focused on for that month. I think you can even use that space to do some sort of monthly tracking if you want =) Hope this helps!

To be honest, I have thought of how to use these pages before, which is why I can offer them on the spot =D Hm, I don't know if I'm treasured by my students, but I do my best to teach them the things they need to learn... Hi Kellerine! I use a variety of pens. Currently, I am using a Pilot Metropolitan with a Pilot Kakuno fine nib, inked with Noodler's Heart of Darkness. I used to use a Staedtler triplus fineliner and at some point, the uniball jetstream pen that came with the Hobonichi purchase. =)
