Why do Christian evangelicals have faith in Trump? - UpFront

  • The majority of evangelical Christians cast their ballot for Donald Trump, with more than 80 percent of white Evangelicals voting him into office.
What is it about Trump’s promise that evangelicals found so appealing?
“Hillary Clinton was so frightening to so many people,” says Eric Metaxas, author of the best-selling book, If You Can Keep It: The Forgotten Promise of American Liberty. “The Christian faith is about grace and forgiveness more than it is about moralism.”
“There has never been a racial divide like this in the churches,” says Jim Wallis, the president of Sojourners, a Christian social justice organisation. “Black evangelicals, Hispanic evangelicals ... did not vote for Donald Trump, so white evangelicals did - I think because they’re more white than evangelical.”
In this week’s Arena, former Barack Obama and George W Bush spiritual adviser Jim Wallis debates with Christian radio host and Trump supporter Eric Metaxas on the reasons behind evangelical faith in Trump.

"The Christian faith is about grace and forgiveness." But, forgiveness only comes with confession of sin, and contrition. When has Donald Trump ever confessed to his sins?

The Donald said "He doesn't ask for forgiveness because he didn't do anything wrong" but you can't blames him for not understanding or knowing the fundamental/central message of the Bible ie. all are born sinners in need of forgiveness. Because Mr. TWO Corinthians has probably never seen an open bible up close.

I live in Africa where most western evangelicals come to do most of their work, crusades, and send their ministers to preach the gospel.. Some do this to expand their empires, others genuinely want to do God's work... now when it comes to their Politics and political views it's a new game... I recall during Obama Administration all white evangelicals I spoke to were ashamed to be led by a black man and most of them would express it in private conversations, diner tables and so forth... Now am not saying that I have met all evangelicals that have come to Africa but most of those I have met were now worried that a woman was representing the Democratic Party. Most of them would say to me and I quote: " First a black guy now a woman...!!? America isn't ready for that..." Others would openly say that at this point they would vote for the devil himself if he ran against Hillary. Personally I think this is just about racism, feminism, and in some cases hypocrisy for these white evangelical Trump supporters.

"The conclusions of this brief but
      intense investigation may be comforting
      to scientists but disturbing to
      policymakers. If carbon dioxide
continues to increase, the study group
finds no reason to doubt that climate
changes will result and no reason to
believe that these changes will be
      negligible. The conclusions of prior
      studies have been generally reaffirmed.
However, the global climate system, may
be expected to slow the course of
      observable climate change. A wait-and-

When I searched for clarity on why being Evangelical was considered supporting Trump (as a recently turned Evangelical Christian, I don't want to invest myself in a faith whose political beliefs I completely disagree with), I was disappointed to see what people like the guy on the TV was saying. When someone does a crime to you, you forgive but don't forget what he has done. Would you forget that a rapist has raped and leave him alone with your child? You may forgive him but forgiveness is for yourself and God, not absolving the other person of having done the crime. If that were so, we wouldn't have a justice system and God at all. You can't just forgive when it's convenient to you. There's nothing for you to forgive when some of the inexcusable things Trump have done did not happen to you, like his racial & sexist comments and actions. Let those who were actually affected by that respond to that. The Jesus I came to know when I got into this faith is not the Jesus I'm seeing represented here. I don't know what evangelicism this is but I'm firm in that this is not what I believe in and that Trump would never have been my first choice in an electoral battle.

I am a Christian, but the way I've seen the church behave in this country during the last 4 years has been very questionable, disappointing and down right shameful. This year, I realized that the church I loved so much and where I faithfully participated and volunteered and served for the past 12 years has completed gone mad over heels with the current president. When I confronted my pastors about preaching politics from the pulpit not taking in consideration the fact that "we" were a multicultural church with a white pastor, he didn't even try to understand, rather he went on the defensive assuming we (my husband and I) were accusing him of being a racist. And when asked about why he believes this president is sent from God to do "some" things for Him in this country, he answered with, "oh, I know he's a jerk and I don't agree with a lot of his rhetoric but I believe God chose him to be president for this times" (this was back in Feb 2020--way before George Floyd). I was brokenhearted and disappointed that my pastor was becoming a political speaker for the potus. Needless to say, not only we confronted him, but other minorities who also felt the same way as we did, also had a talk with him, and also left the church. To this day, because of all I've seen taking place in this country in 2020 (covid-19, racial and social unrest, division within the church, family, long time relationships and so much disrespect and non stop lies from the current administration--just to name a few), I haven't set foot in my church since June. I pray daily in my house for the current president to have a change of heart and that God would really reveal Himself to him and I worship in my house, but I'm too disappointed to go back and try to look them in the eye. Church is home now and I don't know for how long. I've seen the church go through a transformation and it's not a good one. They have gotten caught and lost between popularity, the lights, camera and smoke, and all you really can do is choose your dance floor: the church nightclub or the world's nightclub---cleaner or smokier? The church needs repentance and to realize where they've fallen from and remember what is the true Gospel of Christ, the Good News we were entrusted to deliver to the poor and the hungry. Not to be politicians. Jesus is not coming back for a democratic or republican church or party. Stop acting with hypocrisy and like the Pharisees. You've made a den of thieves out of the house of God.

We do live in a time whereas the foundation of things spiritually and naturally are being challenged. Leaders can only preach and declare from their deep rooted foundation. The day we live in is revealing what’s really in people’s hearts. Thing it not strange. The foundation of Gods standeth sure. Will we follow the standards of the Living Christ or a new personality. The foundation of Christ is revealed in John 3:16, Acts 2:38, Hebrews 6:1-2. The Name we carry or defend is to be Christ not a cultural norm. He alone has the words of eternal life and not a politician. We look for an eternal kingdom of righteousness!!

Interesting argument from a few years ago. As a Canadian, I’m always amazed how Americans are blinded by the Republicans lower taxes, less government involvement, and so called “Christian” values. In Canada the average family net worth is $678,800 while the median family net worth is $259,700. The difference is because of the number of ultra rich which skew the average higher. In the US, the average family net worth is $692,100 while the median family net worth is $97, 300. The US has more money, but way, way less people ever see that. If you are black in the US, your median family net worth is about $13,000. Your country could eliminate poverty...but chooses over and over to feed the rich.

Didnt he create miscarriage, stillborns and death at chilbirth? When an unwanted, negleted child is born, is god going to feed and clothe him and provide for him? Why is it ok for god to kill? Oh right, because he is an powerful god who should not be questioned, not some scared young girl who can cant provide for her child. @Bret 1959 Thank-you for reading my comment. I am perfectly aware of what the Bible says. As for Paul. He states he was chosen. Sounds narcissistic to me. His doctrine contradicts Jesus and his disciples. I believe Jesus' brothers and his disciples knew him better than Paul. Jesus would of taught sacrifice while he was alive if that was God's desire. He did not teach it. Christianity, of which I was raised, to me is a religion much like the Pharisees practiced. Thank-you

@Bret 1959 Thank-you for your reply. Again I ask, why did Jesus not participate in temple animal sacrifice? Also, the Israelites wrote a book saying they are the chosen people. My opinion of God is massively higher than that. He doesn"t choose favorites. That is not nice. God is perfect in all ways. Also, just throwing something out there for you. I think the covenant talk is nonsense. Who cares what God said to the Israelites. God is alive. I care what He says to me. He talks to you. He is beautiful. If you really want to know God do what I did and say Hello. He will answer. You and God will have your own story and your own covenant. I wish you well and God Bless.

    • @pennyyeomans4115
      @pennyyeomans4115 Před 5 lety +1

@Bret 1959 Thank-you for your comment. My question is why didn't Jesus verbally teach blood is needed for the forgiveness of sins? The tribe of Judah were sinners. His disciples were sinners. Howcome only the Pharisees and Sadduccees were blood obsessed? Jesus was not temple obsessed either. He never lived in Jerusalem. He taught anywhere, inside and out. He never gave money to the Temple. He never told his disciples to give money to the temple. You have a lot of Biblical knowledge. You have a very close relationship with that book and with Christianity. How is your relationship with God? God is not a Christian. Jesus was not a Christian. Paul was a Pharisee. God is not blood thirsty. Jesus nwver laid down his life for anyone. That beautiful man was murdered alongside many others during those days. The Roman Empire was evil. I am no longer a Christian. Something happened in my lufe and I cried out to my Father. He responded because He is alive. No blood. No covenant. No Bible. Just a child and her Father. Thank-you

The poor in spirit shall experience God. I too had nightmares and woke up screaming. I speak in tongues. I do not believe God makes disposable people. Non Christians are not disposable. I don't believe in demons. Our ego is all anyone needs to go down the wrong path. I am glad you know God. When I began to look around I found most religions know Him. What we call the Holy Spirit the Hindu religion calls Kundalini. We are all one, no matter what name we call something. Thank-you.
