People say the The Crusader have PTSD, I think that fit more with Man-At-Arms.
The Crusader volunteered to join the war and excel at it. He become so familiar with combat and conflict that he can't go back to having quiet simple life. Equivalent to veterans having difficulty adjusting to the norms, they prolonged their stay in military or find similar profession.
I don't know if that count as PTSD, but that's my perspective of him.

Even more than usual veterans of many modern and conflicts (which I am not downplaying but have different circumstances unless something as terrible as Stalingrad or other utterly inhumane slaughters), the heroes in DD faced horrors of war one cannot imagine and pure carnage, especially in the frenzy of gruesome melee combat and religious zealotry, they are dehumanized by that, and not only have PTSD, especially in MAA's case, but even worse they are forever changed, a shell of their former selves, who can know only war and who probably lost the notions of love and happiness, and in this short the crusader knows he can never return, so he must leave his past behind for everyone's good, and forget his family, for regret is sin
And now the only thing he has left is adventuring and risking his life to defeat the terrible evil that beckoned most if not all the heroes to the Hamlet, in a form of suicidal redemption and seeking for purpose, more or less... or at least this is the feeling I get out of it

    • @pieines7299
      @pieines7299 Před 3 lety +77

There is a sense of shared trauma that only them can understand, having to trust your comrade with your life, and inability to connect with normal people that did not have such traumatic experience, plus the fact that the only marketable skill you have is now killing, that make staying in the military enticing for some, rather than try to adjust again to normal life.
It's a bit like a Stockholm syndrome. the extreme experience of war destroyed you, and made you unable to adjust to anything else than war, everything else feel meaningless next to it, and you can't go back to your old self.

Duty or love? A choice nobody should ever have to make. Yet, make it he did, transformed by a life of war and death, refusing to go back, considering himself unworthy of their love, giving his life to his faith. But, in the darkest of moments, Reynauld the Crusader can't keep the mask up and remembers all too well how much he misses his family, and how much he regrets not coming home.
There are some things you should never let go of, no matter how much you think you are doing the right thing.

It interesting what people do not know about war.
The horrors that people ignore, the things soldiers saw and did that either changed them, or broke them.
Reynauld to me is interesting he is a mixed bag, he wishes to return home but is conflicted by his morals as a crusader. He forgets them so that he will not go back home, he has sinned in a sense of forgetting his flesh and blood family whom loved him and cared for him. He wishes to carry on the work of the Holy Father.
His kleptomania maybe a weird form of copping, he keeps things to remind him of his mission, which became an addiction of sorts, a hard thing to kick away without proper help. Which he denies to take unless forced to.

It's a story that is void of sickness-death-grief (for the protagonist, at least), and still one of the saddest one, I think. A man who lost his way, with no supernatural excuse to blame but the human psyche.

" I remember the day that those men came to my cottage. Gleaming armour and brighter smiles, shining from within with virtuous purpose. 'You will always bear strength in your arm when you swing for the Lord, and you will always find resolve in your heart when you enact his works' they told me, as I set off to March with them that first day.
And as the years passed I came to understand two things; the first, the funny thing, about a heathen and a holy man, is that one bleeds the same as another, cries out for his faith or his family to preserve him... when we lay in the dirt, perhaps it is only the Lord above who can distinguish us, as the crows, the maggots, and the other carrion creatures come to feed, do not.
Yes, I remember, the words of the man who inducted me to the ways of the righteous... with foe in front of me, my arm has been strong, and my heart has borne resolve for so, so long now... But, when you can not bear to hold your wife, for in your zeal that arm might crush her... and you cannot open your heart to your child for fear that you died long ago, and those carrion feeding beasts have already long since been become claimant for your heart... then yes. The second thing. The Lord might provide that which you need in his service... but be wary, when all you can see is sin and the promise of perdition, you will come to learn he has left you with nothing else."

If only the last part of the opera, when we see the family waving away, and the crusader reaction, was slightly deeper or "sader" similarly as how the crusader "feels".
I think that could seal the deal.

I remember first leaving my small farm, my family. I was called to arms by the lord and my beliefs. Soon, I was on the battlefield. Years went by and I saw men die. With my willpower and faith I kept moving forward. Private to Corporal, Corporal to Sergeant, Sergeant to Commander. But not once did I question my faith. Everyday I prayed. And with every battle I survived, my faith grew. I was death on the battlefield. The holy hammer of god.
But even my faith could not lead to our victory. So I returned to my small farm. But I could not rest. There is plenty of evil and heresy out there, and I will bring the torch to it all. So I turn my back on my past and pushed foward. Now I'm here, with this shady thief, mad quack doctor, and a priestess. My last crusade. Accompanied with fools and walking corpses.
    I. Am. The. Light.

What? You see the the family going back to the house instead of wondering why he does not come back.
In my opinion he sacrifices himself to protect his family. He wants to go back but he knows of the dangers out there so he cant allow him to be "weak" and give in to his desires but sty out there to protect what he loves.

Notice the color tone in the background of the paintings. Green represents a more peaceful and familiar life. Gradually, he takes a liking to the war and the background becomes reddish. When he returns home, everything is green while he is still reddish. He no longer belongs to that life, that's why he abandons it. Sad. 🥺
