People say the The Crusader have PTSD, I think that fit more with Man-At-Arms. The Crusader volunteered to join the war and excel at it. He become so familiar with combat and conflict that he can't go back to having quiet simple life. Equivalent to veterans having difficulty adjusting to the norms, they prolonged their stay in military or find similar profession. I don't know if that count as PTSD, but that's my perspective of him. You keep stealing those tresure, Reynauld!
I could be missing something here so take it with a grain of salt but one of the crusader's tickets is conscription papers. He may have gone willingly but he did not volunteer for it.
Even more than usual veterans of many modern and conflicts (which I am not downplaying but have different circumstances unless something as terrible as Stalingrad or other utterly inhumane slaughters), the heroes in DD faced horrors of war one cannot imagine and pure carnage, especially in the frenzy of gruesome melee combat and religious zealotry, they are dehumanized by that, and not only have PTSD, especially in MAA's case, but even worse they are forever changed, a shell of their former selves, who can know only war and who probably lost the notions of love and happiness, and in this short the crusader knows he can never return, so he must leave his past behind for everyone's good, and forget his family, for regret is sin And now the only thing he has left is adventuring and risking his life to defeat the terrible evil that beckoned most if not all the heroes to the Hamlet, in a form of suicidal redemption and seeking for purpose, more or less... or at least this is the feeling I get out of it
There is a sense of shared trauma that only them can understand, having to trust your comrade with your life, and inability to connect with normal people that did not have such traumatic experience, plus the fact that the only marketable skill you have is now killing, that make staying in the military enticing for some, rather than try to adjust again to normal life. It's a bit like a Stockholm syndrome. the extreme experience of war destroyed you, and made you unable to adjust to anything else than war, everything else feel meaningless next to it, and you can't go back to your old self.
"As a soldier of war fighting for a just cause, destruction follows me wherever I go and hopeless desolation is the only thing that remains on my path for righteousness. I will not allow myself to bring this faith to the one place I know is undeserving of it."
I read in a Q & A once that the reason why the characters eyes are always blacked out is because it shows they are all missing something or hold something that no longer makes them entirely human. Reynauld- His family Dismas- His regret Paracelsus - Her curiosity Junia - Her lust The list goes on
I really love the colour of background in this one. As we can see, it goes from green (peaceful life) to red (full battle). And when crusader returns home, his bg colour is still red. He didn't return from the war...
Duty or love? A choice nobody should ever have to make. Yet, make it he did, transformed by a life of war and death, refusing to go back, considering himself unworthy of their love, giving his life to his faith. But, in the darkest of moments, Reynauld the Crusader can't keep the mask up and remembers all too well how much he misses his family, and how much he regrets not coming home. There are some things you should never let go of, no matter how much you think you are doing the right thing.
I like how it leaves it up to speculation whether or not the Wife and Child recognized him. He had changed so much that I believe they waved at him not knowing that was the same man who left them long ago.
@@RPGente It could also have been in the crusader's mind. Like thinking of them welcoming him back. Another interpretation could be that he actually tried staying with them, and was unable to, kind of like the protagonist in the Hurt Locker.

Almost the man-at-arm's anthithesis.
What I absolutely love about your work is that it blends so perfectly with the cut scenes from the Darkest Dungeon itself while still keeping the art of the comic. Genuinely impressive!
In my first ever save in DD (which I abandoned cause I thought I fucked up hard) Reynauld went through like 4 different runs and everytime he had a resolve test, he became Courageous or Stalwart. Absolute legend. He only stole once the entire time.
It interesting what people do not know about war. The horrors that people ignore, the things soldiers saw and did that either changed them, or broke them. Reynauld to me is interesting he is a mixed bag, he wishes to return home but is conflicted by his morals as a crusader. He forgets them so that he will not go back home, he has sinned in a sense of forgetting his flesh and blood family whom loved him and cared for him. He wishes to carry on the work of the Holy Father. His kleptomania maybe a weird form of copping, he keeps things to remind him of his mission, which became an addiction of sorts, a hard thing to kick away without proper help. Which he denies to take unless forced to.
Perfect animation. I love it, but I would have slowly drowned the peaceful calm music of the farm with the war theme, as representing the inability of the crusader to turn from his path. It's a story that is void of sickness-death-grief (for the protagonist, at least), and still one of the saddest one, I think. A man who lost his way, with no supernatural excuse to blame but the human psyche.
" I remember the day that those men came to my cottage. Gleaming armour and brighter smiles, shining from within with virtuous purpose. 'You will always bear strength in your arm when you swing for the Lord, and you will always find resolve in your heart when you enact his works' they told me, as I set off to March with them that first day.
