- Taking a look at the Dark-Life 2 demo. It aims to change up the time of day for Half-Life 2 chapters. Meaning chapters that take place at day are now at night, and vice-versa.

If you've actually gone outside, at night, under a full moon, there is enough moonlight to light up the entire place, and even cast shadow. If that's the setting for the majority of the levels I really hope they take that into account.
A still fog for Ravenholm is fine and all, but imagine if there's rolling fog on the town, and your sight distance changes as you progress. That would be super cool.
I hope they add werewolves.

I love how much you can see at night when there aren't any streetlights around.
Sure, sometimes you can't, but thats what flashlights, torches, cellphones were invented for.
I've never experienced that. I went out to camp near a telescope in the middle of the desert, and it was placed there due to the lack of light pollution in the area. Without light pollution, the stars and galaxy look bright as day, but everything on the actual ground is pitch-black. You can't even see three feet in front of you without a torch.

It's all about the phases of the moon. Full moon = bright moonlight. New moon = very dark night. This happens everywhere, whether there are light pollution or not.
In fact I'm seeing shadow-casting moonlight by just walking out to my front porch, in the 'burbs, with streetlights right in front of the house.
Check the date of your camping trip agaist the phases of the moon. It's probably not full moon, or it's not out while you're up.

I think it's really hard when the moon is dark.
Where I live, there are many large light sources arround... even when the streetlights are kilometers away. I only ever notice real darkness under trees or roofs.
I guess that means my experience is limited to that. Then again, I often don't switch on the lights, even when others would.
@@mfaizsyahmi It was a gibbous. What's actually lighting your area in the 'burbs is what's called "light pollution" caused by streetlights and such reflecting off the sky.

Some of these comments about the city being "too bright" at night are quite puzzling. What the hell made people think the Combine give a single shit about the Citizen's electricity usage when they have thousands of reactors and they don't care if Eli nabs one and Kleiner steals power from the grid to power a teleport? When the citizens have their CRT TVs on all day listening to Breen and 80% of lightbulbs you see, even in Ravenholm, are on? What gave you the idea that the Combine don't maintain C17 infrastructure when we see that's exactly what they use Combine Workers and Vortigaunts for, keeping in mind that they USE the infrastructure. The combine USE the roads and the trains and the electrical grid.
City 17 has a ton of people, I'd go as far as to say it's overpopulated (as seen in every bit where you enter one of the housing blocks), which is what allowed a successful rebellion in the first place. The combine don't care if people are using electricity. There's no reason that City 17 at night should look like a DayZ server.

Great work, it's really stunning to see so many of these familiar scenes have their entire tone and atmosphere shifted by the lightning. It looks amazing!
I gotta say, the mod looks great. Instantly downloaded and tried it. Great job! The Half-Life Community could use more ambitious people like you! I wish there was something more than my share of enthusiasm to contribute to the development of the mod. BTW - I really hope you'll keep with this minimal approach to cover as many levels of the game as possible. Adding extra features like others suggested would be welcome, but perhaps after the entire game was done? Keep up the good work!
@@samsegalloldude thanks alot for the comment ! we are definetly keeping a relatively minimal approach, we will only change stuff that creates an atmosphere we find fitting to the mod.
@@bouribou4073 Also, don't listen to the people saying there's "too many lights on". It's not a zombie apocalypse, city 17 is a city full of people and every light bulb, even in Ravenholm, works fine, and the combine produce enough power that they don't give a shit if Kleiner is stealing a bunch from the grid to power a teleporter.
@@bouribou4073 If you're open to suggestions, I feel like it would be a nice touch to give Gordon a light as a secondary fire for one of his guns that doesn't use secondary fire. I know he has the suit flashlight, but there's just something more immersive about physically holding the light rather than it coming from the chest.
I like how The Citadel has those search lights now, kinda reminiscent of the Beta Citadel designs
The only thing that doesn't really make much sense about this mod is the fact that like 90% of all the windows are lit up. I think one of the first things the Combine would do is restrict everyone's access to electricity, meaning each apartment has at most a single light bulb. So you'd see a small shimmer here and there, but not a full-on light show like here.
It does however look really freaking cool, and I suppose it fits the skybox you see at the end of the original game, where the entire city looks like a metropolis from the US for some reason.
The skybox at the end of HL1 probably looks like a US metropolis because HL2 was originally set in America (revealed by HL2:RTB)

From what we've seen every apartments has a TV and other electrical appliances. If there was no electricity, why would they need all that stuff? Plus, electricity shouldn't be a problem knowing that most of the population is dead and those remaining won't need much.
I feel like ravenholm should have less mist because the experiment of making a daytime area scary is amazing,
Actually in my opinion it shouldn't. Where I'm from, even as far inland as I am, areas can get so thick with fog early in the morning that you can't see more than a few yards in front of you in places. It's realistically and believably foggy.
if you look at concept art Ravenholm was originally going to take place in a desert town in the morning/evening
it always was meant to be a mining town infested with zombies but it changed drastically visually throughout development

Ravenholm should nice and sunny, actually dangerous monsters don't care about the weather.
in my opinion this feels more sci-fi compared to retail one it really fits deus ex ravenholm does feel like a liminal space and a old indie horror game and i agree that it looks like silent hill and some chapters fit half-life 2 beta
This mod looks incredible so far! Can’t wait to see what they do with a nighttime highway 17 (especially the bridge section). I’m also curious how they’re going to pull off a daytime nova prospekt infiltration; a misty coastline lit up by the prison’s guard towers would be pretty cool!
A cool twist for the daytime Ravenholm section would be making it rainy for small section in the beginning before letting up the rain, then clearing up the sky after Gordon leaves the mines

Imagine combining this mod with the mirrored mod, it would be like playing a completely new game.
Brilliant! The earlier stages actually remind me quite a bit of Cry of Fear and how the city sections had similar lighting those seen in Dark-Life 2
This mod perfectly encapsulates everything I wish they kept from the HL2 beta. All the story details and extra weapons and whatnot I can live without (tbh I actually prefer the story we got in the final game anyway). But the shift in aesthetic from nighttime environments to daytime ones is the one thing I plainly feel was a poor decision. These dark city maps just look absolutely beautiful and have such a rich atmosphere that I rarely see replicated in other games.
EDIT: BTW, does anyone know how I'd play this with HL2 MMod?
I think the Devs behind this are gonna work on implementing MMod compatability once they're complete building the mod itself.

The ominous ambience created by this mod during the graveyard section reminds me a lot of that crypt entrance from Return to Castle Wolfenstein, that combined with the dynamic lighting surely adds a whole other layer of nostalgia to me, truly impressive stuff.
I always appreciated how valve incorporated the passage of time into the story of HL2, it felt very natural and realistic the way it takes place over the course of several days. This mod looks like a love letter to that concept and I’m extremely excited for the finished product.

I'd love to see an edit of this mod that makes every map take place at night permanently, an eternal night of sorts. Unrealistic but why not
Imagine this: it is midnight in highway 17, and if you go too far into the shriveled up sea, instead of churning infernal leaches, the ichthyosaur stops you from going out of bounds.
Funny, we're in winter here in the south and is super foggy right now outside, I'm talking about some really thick fog here, you can't see even 1 meter ahead, it's just the perfect time to play through this demo and some Silent Hill too why not. Anyways I hope this mod gets improved and finished because this demo was very promising and the devs are very active.

To what you said. "Change the skybox and call it a day". I actually did that and it kinda worked, except on highway 17. This would be great if it could be seamlessly added to the regular campaign.
Some changes I would like (for me)
Route Kanal: Make the skybox a bit darker.
Ravenholm: Make it less foggy.
Anticitizen: Nothing. It looks great.

I'd personally add rain for Ravenholm.
Something that I would like in ravenholm is to have it feel colder, idk something like some post processing effect to make the colors seem cooler
It needs a wind effect, blowing the fog around, making it change to more dense, blowing sleet in the air, along with howling wind sound. Would add even more to the sense of feeling closed off and unaware of whats happening around you.

It may be heresy but I think this would look really good in VR
One “night time” error is that clouds of dust are usually not visible, they don’t light up like during the daytime. You can see this happen in movie making too, where they shoot a scene in daylight and then put a dark filter on .. but the characters still kick up little white dust clouds, and sky clouds are still light and fluffy.
That one piece of Civil Protection promo art with blue lenses will never stop getting on my nerves. Everybody depicts them with blue lenses because of it.

I suggested them to make the sky orange during the uprising because of all the fires, it'll make it a lot more immersive. They liked the idea.
I gave them some examples and it does look very dope.
It'd be pretty cool if there were flares being fired by artillery in Follow Freemen to give more dynamic lighting. Hopefully this mod is still being developed.
I absolutely love Anticitizen One in this setting, seeing the sunset after a rainy day while in the middle of a literal war makes it extremely atmospheric and apocalyptic... gives off a vibe I can't describe precisely

I wonder if they'll do the episodes, not sure how they'd do EP1 since it's mostly smog out, but EP2 would be really interesting at night, making for a much more "covert" feeling moving from place to place evading Combine forces until you get to White Forest.

God, HL2 is such a masterpiece. I remember playing it as a kid in total amazement at the physics engine. It still holds up to this day.
What would be a great touch in the canal level is, the moment a barrel goes off, every single unlit window becomes lit

I liked the idea of making a sunlit Ravenholm more. Not a super sunny colorful Ravenholm, but a more cloudy one, with a dirty sun breaking through the clouds.

I can agree that lit up windows dose look a bit ood, it feels like completely different sci-fi world with its own life and infrastructure. But infrustractor was destroyed in 7 hour war. Its not a problem, its just a bit off for a HL 2 fan like me. And I also agree that overall this mod lock DAMN GOOD!

They use the trains, you can hear trucks going around transporting things, city 17 infrastructure is maintained by combine workers (seen in Alyx and also, take note of things like Vorts cleaning the streets in HL2 and the places that ARE undergoing renovation). Kleiner literally steals power from the nearby power station to power his teleporter. The only parts of City 17 that are destroyed before the rebel uprising is the bit around the Citadel, it only starts to get fucked up when Gordon leaves Nova Prospekt and sparks the revolution.
@@Freezorgium Actually you right. I just feel like, the lit up window's are giving to much sense that city lives a "full life", it doesn't feel like there's been a apocalyptic war. But when you put it like that, than yes, it makes much more sense.

the best part I would expect about this mod is the courtyard of Nova Prospekt during daytime, in Half-Life 2 Beta the courtyard was set during daytime, but Valve changed it into night time due to because they trying to add the creepy aesthetic of the prison. I really want to see how mod team will handle this scene on daytime.

Honestly this makes more sense than the original due to how tame the Combine in the game seem to be. Sneaking through the City-17 canals in the night seems more likely to work rather than doing it during the day when Gorgon is easy to see. Great mod!

It's the faintest stars that shine on the darkest nights. Bright stars shine every night, because they are bright. Good on you for putting in the effort though, not many people take an interest in elegant and descriptive speech.
Now I really want to go driving by the beach in nighttime. Seeing all those Overwatch outposts glowing in the night near the bridge and elsewhere, having to navigate over the bridge in the darkness guided only by light from the bridge, and finally, on the sands, trying to make your way through the dark while antlions spring up from below.
