  • I’ve had a lot of people ask me questions about LegalZoom and other websites that help you “DIY” your legal issues. Specifically, whether or not it’s a good idea to use these types of websites and DIY services for your legal needs, whether it be for your estate planning or for your contracts when forming a business. So, the purpose of this post is simply to give my thoughts on the topic. I certainly don’t mean to call out LegalZoom, I just name them because they are the largest and most popular of these types of sites.

If you set up your LLC through a do-it-yourself service don't forget about taxes. Unlike regular employees who have their taxes deducted from their paycheck, business owners have to estimate and pay their taxes throughout the year.

Great content Aiden...the edits are great too. The only other add that i can think of, is that if you are truly serious about going into business, you had better develop a relationship with a good attorney that is experienced in your business niche. Of course budget needs are real but, like some comments below...you can spend hundreds through boilerplate documents and still not have everything you need to protect your assets in a legal battle.

  • @artoflaw
    @artoflaw Před 9 lety +4

You are right that diy legal providers don't provide the personalized service that an attorney provides.
If someone is willing to do a lot of research and wants to use a diy service like legalzoom as an efficient tool, then there are benefits to using it.
For example, there is a cool free tool on legal zoom to help business owners decide what type of business entity to choose. The website asks a series of general questions about your business, and tells you the business entity selected most often in your state (you can find this on the website pretty easily).
Now, this is different then saying what the best business entity is for you, but it is good market research.
On the other hand, I have experienced people trying to perform diy legal work, resulting in a mistake. The cost of an attorney to fix a diy mistake is often more than if they hired an attorney in the first place.
    Anyway, great video.

The Art of Law Great input! Those websites do certainly offer some value and good services, I just don't think they should be the one-stop-shop that many people use them as. And I couldn't agree more; fixing the mistakes will usually be less expensive than avoiding them in the first place. Thanks for the comment!

what if I did a will with leaglezoom and never had it signed or notarized and 3 to 4 years later i decided to change a few things on my own from copies i made from the first will but this time I made it a self proving will with 2 witnesses and a notary. Is it now a good will or do I need to register it with the state? i'm in utah and someone suggested that. I never heard of registering a will?. thank you

I personally used Legalzoom for starting my business. It was a long process, I was on the phone with them daily fixing an issue or waiting for a document that was promised. They were not clear about certain fees up front. I felt it was a month long headache and actually put me behind schedule of opening. I am glad I hired someone to help start my business but I would go a different route if I could start over.

    • @GetHelpTax

We have many clients who are e-commerce sellers, and while it is easy to set up an LLC, many times it's best just to be a DBA until you show a profit and prove that the business works.

I am using my name as I am testing things, and I keep changing them. So, no company is formed yet. But, do I need to have a lawyer to have the legal docs for the website. Such as, privacy statement, Disclaimer, term of use.. and if I don’t have them, what are the implications? Thanks

I have a question for you Miss Aiden H. Kramer. Would a site like legal zoom be useful in helping me legally change my whole name in the state of Texas? By the way, i'm a single male adult and the reason why i'm bringing that up is because i know the name change process is different between kids and adult and between singles and couples. I read what the site says about legally changing my name, but i want your opinion on my question since you're a legal expert. Please reply as soon as you can!

You're great! I actually have been wondering how I should go about trademarking for around 6 years now but put it off. It's for my film production company. I don't have a "grown up job" so it's often hard for me to justify spending $2,000 to get a trademark filed correctly and legally instead of spend that money on gear to further my craft, but I'm 25 now and I'm really sick of changing my company name over and over and losing opportunities. I want to be set finally. LegalZoom is always tempting but I'm very hesitant because of course there is the risk of something not done correctly and it all going to the toilet. I know the process takes forever but I keep feeling I should do an LLC and trademark. I'm thinking about changing my company name once I find something and decide on a name that I don't see taken by other people on urls of any site I'll be using or domain names so I don't have to deal with that hassle again. I've had that issue for my comedy film company now, I'm just looking to grow my business and have an all encompassing name. I really don't know where to start from a smart perspective and I realistically don't feel I have the money to get going now, I often hear $2,000 is what to expect in the end for trademarking once everything's said and done. I am curious, is trademarking something that needs to be updated and repaid for every so-many years or is it a lifetime thing? I've always figured it's not the same as copyright, as far as lifetime + 70 years or whatever it's at now.

I was real close to asking for my $ back last week when I received a 2nd call from them saying there was an issue and to call them asap.
I'm thinking now that was Legalzoom "looking out" for me. They had 2 questions that weren't clear on the form I submitted. Still waiting for the paperwork from PA, but I cannot complain about Legalzoom... yet.

I think some attorneys take advantage of what people don't know. Some tend to give you the minimum amount of info that falls just on the line of being ethical but will not take the time to educate their client because it is too time consuming for them. Take the money and get the next client mentality. This sucks for those who are doing the right thing but how does one distinguish between the good and the not so good? Chances are if someone is starting a business, the budget to cover attorney fees is limited. DOG's capitalize on this.

Also, I have used Legal Zoom and it does work in some way. I spent allot time in college and have allot of debt too for my field ad always getting undercut but don't cry about it! Just because someone else was smarter to do it cheaper... and thank you especially for legal fee's which we all hate are WAY TO HIGH! So what! IF you can give me a system where I can spend $30 to send a letter over something simple to a bad situation to go into a bigger one without spending $1's to just get my point across then THANK YOU! Anyone who's in business for them self and we are barely making it, we freak out knowing we might get a letter from a lawyer that a client isn't happy with our services and need to get a lawyer to! All it takes is one time to happen for some of us and we are out of business. I'm sorry but haven't had the best luck with most lawyers so this reply is personal, I'm - $1.5 Million from lawyers!
