HHO Dry Cell Generator build from Scrap, How-To DIY

  • In this video I'm building a homemade HHO dry cell generator form scrap, this is the first dry cell generator I have built and I'm am not a professional. The only materials I had to purchase was the fasteners cost about four dollars. An HHO generator is just a unit which separates Hydrogen and Oxygen from water using electrolysis. Electrolysis is a very simple process learned in high school science class with a Hoffman Apparatus. They call these things HHO generators now because the term HHO was adopted from the masses. The gas that comes out of these units are a mixture of Hydrogen and Oxygen, "Oxyhydrogen" when water and a catalyst is used. Oxyhydrogen was used in the 1800's for lighting " Lime Light" . Another wee tip, you need 5 neutral plates per stack when using 12 volts as a supply. Using 4 gives 5 spaces, 12 divided by 5 = 2.4 volts giving you an excess.

    You mentioned in 22:37 that the screws could never touch any plates. That you should use insulating material or coating. But I noticed you didn't use any. As someone suggested in the comments there are nylon screws or plastic tubes which you can insert the metal screws at least. I think you should visibly have shown this for safety reasons so nobody does exactly what they saw and shorts the circuit. I know you did it this way for convenience sake and so the hobbyist can get an idea of its construction. But it is highly important.

      @@ArbitraryOnslaught To compensate for a little warping in the plates (they do so when cut to size) one has got to have some torque on these bolts or it will leak as a sift.
      Sure, nylon bolts and nuts have their use especially in electronics and the like. However, I doubt they would hold in the long run in such a device. Heat shrink comes in different thickness and size. It's pretty tough and as there are no mechanical movements in the assembled cell it won't be a problem. The heat shrink will also protect the bolts from corrosion. Stainless steel bolts this size are somewhat expensive so galvanized could be used. Heat shrink and some clear coat and corrosion won't be a problem.

    Definitely a cool video! It is good that he made the viewers aware of isolating the electrical connection between the plates by insulating the bolts that pass-through the stack... Previous to this video, I wondered why neutral plates are used in designs like this. Now I know, to reduce one of the 3 elements that cause corrosion of metals ( potential difference aka-voltage). Another thing that I learned from this video is the importance of staggering the lower electrolyte ports in the plates (to reduce the risk of an internal short circuit) and the reduced stagger of the upper gas ports (to allow the rapid flow of the hho to exit the plate chambers). Very good informative video! Thank You!

    • @eddieallen8982
      @eddieallen8982 Před 7 lety

      Donald c49 no recycled stainless steel say grade 308 isn't pure while higher grades like 316 is actual pure stainless steel. 308 is used for appliances, restaurant equipment ect that needs rust prevention but doesn't have to be 100% stainless. 316 is preferred for hho cells because it lasts longer.

    • @BinneReitsma
      @BinneReitsma Před 6 lety

      Actually it's commonly called 'chrome-steel', which is a very poor stainless steel quality, you may call it stainless steel if it contains so many non ferrous metals that a magnet doesn't have or have minimal effect on it.
      304 is most common used and 316 is more used for salty and acidic enviroments.
      And then you got hundreds of other stainless steel alloys..

    • @michaelmartinez1345
      @michaelmartinez1345 Před 6 lety

      I'm no metalurgist. So please excuse me if I'm in error here. I have worked with 301 stainless in the past that is partially ferrous (has iron) & slightly magnetically attracted to the iron particles in the nickel/ iron alloy which forms stainless. I'm not certain of what the difference between 301 & 316 stainless is, maybe there can be NO detectable attraction to magnetism with the 316 stainless steel?

You are electrolyzing the Chrome out of the stainless steel, which will make it rust + produce extremely toxic water (do not touch the electrolyte barehand after you have used this machine, it WILL kill you). The electrolyte will be so toxic in the end that not only you cannot touch it by hand, breath it, OR actually throw it down the drain. To avoid the rusting + toxicity problems, either use copper as your anodes, or use platinum or gold. Regards man, keep the good work up

I meant no disrespect, only the best guidance I could offer. My father raised me in the school of "if it's worth doing, it's worth doing it right". So I'm probably a little biased or you could say ANAL, lol. I don't want to see someone throw away money if they can avoid it, but the learning experience is good for some people. I was raised in a garage with a father building helicopters and other fancy things so I'm sure I'm blessed with an advantage of mechanical understanding. So still sitting here trying to figure out how this thing turns on..
    So just the concept of connecting metal together with holes and rubber in the middle and pumping water through it produces electricity? I still don't understand what it is connected to in order to turn it on.
    Sigh~

      ok im not a science geek or not even qualify to comment in this field, but, if im not mistaken, he is trying to produce HHO...from water...that will fill in those plates...when it is charge (the positive and negative like he sketched)...the H2O which is water...will break down to HH and O...HH is then collected and being "lead" (using tube maybe?) to say an engine. combine HH with spark or fire will create "exploding" effect ..or combustion in your engine....hows that for an explanation from someone who knows nothing about this :P

      so basically they use a battery?
      Yea I did some more research.. for some reason I didn't realize you needed a battery to charge the plates. My brain broken. =P

      Yes battery is used as power source, when there is current flowing (i think this is the same concept as electrolysis..correct me if im wrong)..the negative side of the battery that charges the plate will "attracts" hydrogen...while the positive side "attracts" the oxygen ...a lot of these setup also includes a bubbler (which i think used as an indicator whether your plates or dry cell does its job or not...bubbles produced indicates that it is doing its job)..and i noticed the water is mix with some electrolyte (ive seen even baking soda used) to increase efficiency of the current flowing...i too just started researching about this...so..

      Corrected it is nothing at all like electrolysis. So anyway, it can be connected to house power supply. This is a very basic tutorial, he didn't even add an electrolyte to the water which is paramount. Also, you really need a WPM for optimum use.
