Disney did Hades dirty. Out of all the Olympians, Hades is the most compassionate and loyal of the Gods. Especially when it comes to his love Persephone. If they actually fallowed the actual myth, it was Hera who cursed Alcaeus and changing his name to Heracles (Hercules is the Romanize name).
Hera and King Augeas would have made an amazing villain duo with them scheming how to make Heracles life miserable with forces him to do the 12 labors.

@@RicardoPerez-rz8pu Eris in this movie is a combination of two characters from Greek mythology.
Firstly there is the primordial deity of Chaos. The entity from which all life and the first primordial entities in Greek emerged and all life with eventually return to Chaos. It is a being that stands above even Zeus and the Olympians and is the only true all powerful entity in Greek myths.
Secondly her name comes from Eris the personification of strife in Greek myth. In Greek she is suppose to be the daughter of Nyx the primordial entity who rules the night and is one of the first children of Chaos. So Eris in Greek is the grand daughter of Chaos. However in Homers Roman version she is the sister of Ares meaning she would be one of the daughters of Zeus in Homers version.

It’s odd people would say that because if you observe her mannerisms, the way she speaks, the way she presents herself and schemes, she isn’t a simple villain. She’s simply true to her intentions and embodies her genuine essence which is goddess of discord.
I find her quite complex because she doesn’t simply smite humans out of sheer anger or vanity. She does because she has an agenda and analyses the people she chooses to harm directly. At least in this film.

People underestimate Eris SEVERELY. She’s the GODDESS of discord, if she really wanted to she could just plunge the entire world into chaos. However, she doesn’t because she enjoys the strategy aspect of causing catastrophes. Additionally she’s so threatening BECAUSE she’s perfectly calm, to her this is a game that she’s won time and time again.
Edit: Wow this comment really lived a life of its own. In response to one big claim I heard, it is true that Eris would be under Zeus’ jurisdiction and she isn’t primordial chaos, she represents more of human conflict based chaos such as the fall of a kingdom, civil war, arguments, riots, the Trojan war, etc… We shouldn’t assume that just because she’s under Zeus that she couldn’t just plunge the world into chaos, I mean gods and titans have been radically altering the entire universe consistently in their stories and while she probably wouldn’t get far she could possibly start several wars before she’d be stopped and as humans we’re known to start and drag out conflicts until we’ve killed half of our forces doing so.

I always loved the twist reveal of Eris' grand plan. She didnt steal the book to enact some magical, primordial chaos on the world; she did it because she knew it would kick off a series of events that would culminate in Syracuse losing its rightful heir, thereby creating the much more real chaos of political unrest and power struggles. It might not make much of a difference to some but I always thought this was brilliant; magical chaos might bring people together to unite against it, but civil turmoil will guarantee a kingdom collapsing into chaos.

Something that I love about this scene is both the way Eris asked her question Sinbad, because she already knew that Sinbad would lie about not going back to Syracuse, and at the moment, even Sinbad knew he wouldn't keep his word, even though he said he would go back. But the real twist is learning that Sinbad defied Eris's prediction and went back to die, which means despite his initial act of selfishness by lying in the face of a literal deity, he then went and defied her by doing the one thing she never expected. He became a hero in the end even though he's a thief and a criminal.

She would have said he was lying either way. Think about it. If he is lying, her plan works and she gets her chaotic victory. If he's telling the truth, she doesn't just take his word for it. He has to prove he'd do it. She thinks he won't do it and essentially tries to call his bluff. Either way, her only answer would be to say he was lying if he said he'd go back. She didn't need a contingency if he said he wouldn't go back because she knew that he wouldn't say that in front of Marina because that would make her hate him. BOOM.

@@leekit8951 You're the only person who could actually make that explanation more confusing than before. You saw how Eris reacted when Sinbad went back to die. She thought he was genuinely lying when he said he would go back. He even believed her, because he knows what kind of person he is, and the kinds of things he's done in order to get through life. Lie, cheat, steal, and kill. So, why in the world would he actually believe himself when he said he would go back? That is what made it so dramatic when he did go back, because he finally did the one thing that not even he believed he would do: He went back to Syracuse and he defended his best friend and was fully ready to die in order to make up for the things he's done. Everyone was telling him who he was and what he was, so by going back, he proved them all wrong.

@aaronmunnerlyn It really is a good point and that's what makes the irony in this scene so funny. She's obviously doing what she does best by sewing the "seeds of discord," but it's with 100% facts and both Sinbad and Marina instantly know it. It's hilarious to see Sinbad stay silent and Marina immediately fire back defensively in a weak attempt to counter Eris' statement. She tells Eris she doesn't know what's in Sinbad's heart; which is in itself...pure irony because of course she does! She's a goddess after all haha.
I remember immediately thinking it was odd that Marina readily put herself in a situation so close to Sinbad when the voyage began but it's sort of made clear from their first meeting that she was instantly infatuated by the bad boy image he had on full display. She even says rather coyishly something to the effect of "this is the notorious man I've heard so much about" whilst eyeing him like a delicious turkey dinner haha. Eris'revelation and total maipulation via death by truth bomb after truth bomb caused her to go from a begrudging 10 to a flipping 100 in the attraction department for me I must confess. Forgive me my brothers for I have officially gone to the dark side!

Eris (at least this version of her) is among my most favorite villainous characters, becuz she left such an impression on me when I first watched this movie. Her animation, her design, her character, her voice! Everything about her drew me in like a moth to a flame. Michelle Pfeiffer voiced Eris so beautifully, she should have been commended for such excellent voice-acting!
The depiction of Eris was equally impressive, in the way she moved like smoke, her mannerisms, how she interacted with others and the environment and also her manipulations! As this clip showed, her true motivation to framing Sinbad for her theft of the Book of Peace was to prompt Proteus take Sinbad's place, as she predicted Sinbad would run, Proteus would die in his place, and Syracuse would enter a state of chaos with the death of their crown prince! The way she analyzed Sinbad and Proteus was spot-on that it left Sinbad speechless, and Eris was almost proven right about him being a selfish scoundrel, and the only reason he didn't run (at first, at least) was becuz Marina paid Sinbad to recover the Book.
Then she plays this mind-game with them, putting Sinbad on the spot of doing the right thing and dying for it or doing the wrong thing and living with the woman he had grown to love and abandon his childhood friend to his death. When it seemed all was lost and Eris accused him of lying, Sinbad proved otherwise by his actions in returning to save Proteus and accept execution, thus proving Eris wrong and winning the game she had tried to manipulate
Altho she was angry to lose, Eris kept her word (tho she technically had to) and instead of taking revenge for her "embarrassment" she simply ho-hum'd her loss tho she gave a subtle warning to Sinbad that he not push his luck, and simply ta'd everyone before vanishing to continue her divine role in bringing chaos to the world
It was all a magnificent performance and so beautifully executed, especially in the behavior of Eris as a goddess

That’s pretty much a recurrence with Greek deities. They are not exempt from the laws and superstitions of the universe. Even if they are immortal and stronger than humans, if they swear an oath they have to follow through.
I’m glad they actually got a deity that’s accurate to how they were portrayed in mythology, and that deities are bound to the promises they make. Eris is pretty much just like her mythology depiction - just exists to create as much chaos and discord as she pleases.

For those criticizing Eris for being a simplistic villain... well, the movie does the original Greek goddess justice in this part. Ancient Greek goddess of strife did things just because, like when she started the Trojan War by throwing an apple. She was an archetype of what we refer to as "troll" nowadays. In fact she was an embodiment of it. And she set mortals and gods against each other not for any sort of gain or lofty goal, but simply to watch them suffer. And in a way, she personifies the chaotic nature of strife well, not unlike DC's Joker... She cannot be reasoned with, she cannot be paid off, she cannot be comprehended with logic. Sometimes, people hurt each other not for money or power, but just because. As it was aptly put. "Some people (goddesses) just want to watch the world burn"

Eris asked him you don't get the book or you don't get the book. Never trust a woman with red eyes. That is my life's philosophy.

Kinda want to know what would've happened if he had answered "no" instead. I bet Eris's reaction would be priceless, as it would be the complete opposite of what she had planned all along.

For what I might figure out here is that Eris isn’t trying to get Sinbad to turn to the dark side. She’s bound to determine that he is true to his ego.

1:22 they dont animate anything like that anymore. Yeah its 1 sec clip of Eris going "You sure?"
