I've taken combatives and a couple months here and there in different gyms and never once did anyone explain that my punch should be in line with my elbow.
That make an insane amount of sense! I can now picture how to better improve my form when striking. Thank you so much for this.
I always knew you were a legit martial artist. Had no clue you were such an efficient instructor.

gotta say this is a very interesting lesson. never have been fully familiar with punches. i'd always had familiarity with grappling. in fact, my first taste of any kind of martial art was wrestling in high school. then got a REAL taste of grappling when i started learning Combatives when i was in the Army. (Brazillian jiu-jitsu). i never realy got the opportunity to learn things like in this video. awesome how you break everything down and make it very informative. keep up the awesome work!

Michael. I have been your fan since being a little snot. I respect you a lot but there is something i must ask in order to know more about the technique you are mentioning. First of all, my background is Taekwondo, which means i know all the technique you are referring to: the reverse punch. Every punch must be connected in single line of thrust of force. It's quick and effective. However, when i switched to Boxing, there are a lot of times i find myself hurt by the fact that their practice is not through a single line but rather: Hyperbol. The curl patterns will hurt the wrist a lot. Can you upload another video of showing your method of punching when using in boxing please? I would love my hands free than being wrapped in a cloth. :( it's...unatural and uncomfortable.
Ps: when i punch in Taekwondo, i don't have a problem. I only hurt myself when i try their hyperbol boxing moves.
    With best regards

    • @Peter_Siri

what's a hyperbol punch? Is it akin to jabbing and crossing?
I certainly would like to perfect the punch.

    • @dhruvsharma4027
      @dhruvsharma4027 Před 2 lety +1

The hands are not meant to punch in hyperbol movements, they will break. It's not a one time thing either, if you are into boxing for the long run the continuous damage to the hands can be really bad. So i advise to please wear handwraps
We all find them uncomfortable in the beginning, don't worry you will get used to it

I have tried to do this I have done martial arts for 8 years jujitsu and karate, I have a very odd problem my index and middle finger do not go flat enough so I tend to hurt my index finger when punching, it’s the same on both hands, my Sensei has recommended to get good at open hand striking instead, I’m not sure if it’s a slight deformity or a tendon issue any thoughts would be appreciated ^^

I remember in ninth grade I was doing something with my hands in biology class that made the teacher say "dude, your ligaments must not be connected correctly or something, because that (points to my hand), is not normal." I had my whole hand hyperextended so my fingers were bent backwards, all except my pinkie, which was curled down. My ring finger was also hyperextended and not at all pulled forward by my pinkie curling up.
TL;DR, we both have weird connective tissue in our hands.

I haven't really heard of wing chun guys breaking hands, but then again I haven't really seen them get into actual fights.. do you by chance know if they break their hands or just elaborate a little on the subject because, Ive been retraining myself to have a tight fist for everything I do, but do I draw the line at wing chun or?

When I do that, I hurt my thumb. The fist cross the target (a bag, a matrass...) only one centimeter and it hurts to the thumb because it is pushed bachward. Like it was inside the finger but not that much.
For example, if I do push ups with the knuckles, the knuckles of the thumbs touches the floor.

I have developed knee pain from kicking and I think it may have to do with the impact of my shin with the bag tearing the tendons at my knee. Why do we need to pronate our wrists just before striking? The reason you see fighters do that is because they were taught to rotate their wrists and then they got sloppy and eventually started to not strike in a straight plane. I did do some research on this and found out in some traditional martial arts like Kung-Fu, they don't rotate the wrist and hit straight, with the thumb facing up and the pinky down. This causes the 4th and 5th metacarpals to be facing the ground, but it leads to something called the "boxer's fracture" which is a fracture of the 4th and 5th metacarpals. By pronating your wrist so that the knuckles are on a horizontal plane rather than vertical one, you avoid the boxer's fracture and apply more contact area for the 1st and 2nd knuckles which are your strongest.

    Awesome tutorial.
I’ve trained with a couple fo Martial Arts.
Some used closed fist. Others preferred open hand. I’ve been practicing martial arts for about 25 years, but it’s been about 15 years that I have walked into a dojo. I still train, but now I don’t follow a discipline.
This is my question, Mr. White.
When I’m punching with closed fist, or block with closed fist, it feels different than when I punch or block with open hand.
Open Fist is very powerful. But I can’t “feel” it. Your tutorial on twisting the wrist using closed fist is a fine example of the power, but I don’t feel it. This is what I mean by “feeling” it. When I use palm strikes, or open hand strikes, I can feel the power. I can feel it all of my body. It goes through me from head to toe.
    I can feel it though.
For me, it feels more powerful than closed fist. More balanced. Effortless but powerful.
Closed fist has intent. As you demonstrated, it’s an arrow.
Is that the difference? Is there a difference, or is it just me?
Further, what do you think about the subject?

There is a huge technical and physical aspect of this punch - this rule makes any other method weak and ineffective. Without this, one will always end up hurting the wrist (even being an expert will stumble upon a wrist injury) - if not now then later in life. This is the only way!

In spite of Michael Jai White's in incredible In-Shape physique I still argue with those who swear he's too old to play certain roles for Marvel DC, or Valiant comic book movies. Before Stan Lee died and the Black Panther movie started filming Stan Lee was quoted as saying" There was no better person to play the role of the Black Panther then Michael Jai White." Not only is he not too old he has the real skill set where he doesn't require start person the way Drew Barrymore in Charlie's Angels. He's the real deal and the only actor in Hollywood that actually has 8 plus black belts, in eight different styles, which is unheard of in the history of Hollywood. Black Belt Magazine in 2014 named Michael Jai White best martial artist of the year. WWF star Steve Stone Cold Austin said by Michael Jai White" Pound per pound Michael Jai White is the best martial artist in Hollywood." Sorry Drew Barrymore.
