Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and it's time to put a smile on that face with our breakdown of the 100 best easter eggs in Batman Begins.
Our journey begins with the Batman logo appearing on screen after being formed by a cauldron of Bats...yes that's the name used to describe a group of them. Anyway why this is important is because the logo kickstarts every single movie in the trilogy and with it comes a lot of symbolism and double meaning.
Batman begins is created by bats as these become integral to the entry. The theme of the film is fear and overcoming it and Bruce at one point throws himself into the midst of them when exploring the cave in order to overcome his fear and thus become the hero that the city needs.
The Dark Knight starts off with the symbol flying through a blue fire and to me this represents how the Joker is someone that wants to watch the world burn but that Batman will always be there to stop him.
The Dark Knight Rises has the symbol created through ice cracking and a large part of the film takes part in the winter and involves Bane breaking batman.
We watch as a young bruce takes an arrow head and then falls down a well. This shot would later be echoed in the dark knight rises when Bruce is climbing out of the pit and symbolically this moment kick starts a motif that would come full circle in that film.
Here Bruce has to be helped out of it by his father but come the third film he is able to do it himself showing that he has been able to rise...pun intended.
This well is the entrance to the cave and as we see it's swarming with bats which create nightmares for Bruce and tie back to his fear.
The character even wakes up in a prison, haunted by these nightmares and we discover that his fear of bats in some way lead to his parents death.
Thus him confronting bats is also confronting the trauma that has driven him and it's a nice way of layering everything into one cohesive narrative.
When Bruce is listening to his father's heartbeat at one point we can also see little Bat symbols on his sweater that would appear as the signal in the dark knight rises, lacing the movie with an even deeper subtext.
Not too long after Bruce meets Ducard and then is released from Prison. Ducard is actually a character in the comics that trained Bruce to be a detective and at the time it was a big twist to learn that he'd actually been Ra's Al Ghul the whole time.
I know it's typically pronounced Ra's but as they call him Ra's to keep consistent I'm just gonna call him that here.
He makes a journey across the rocky cavernous icelands and this location was also echoed in the first Justice League trailer so we may see something similar in the Snyder Cut when it releases next year.
Bruce ends up getting trained by the league of Shadows who in the comics are called The League Of Assassins.

It was part of it, which included the elites, the chosen ones by ra's, they were the strongest and deadliest, lead by Lady Shiva since she was the strongest, then they separated themselves from league of assassins and if I'm not mistaken they retcon it and they are part of LoA again

3:55 I never noticed this till now, but if you pause at this exact moment from the breakdown, you can see the performers of the theatre show Bruce is watching as a child have masks that look exactly like the head of an actual bat.
Honestly, with the experience, little Bruce went through at the beginning of the film with the well, I kinda feel like the theatre is just trying to f*** with Bruce's head even more.

I'm sorry to crush the theory that the Joker was a veteran of any type of military involvement. Anyone who enters the military goes through a complete background check, to include running of the subject's fingerprints. As soon as a person is fingerprinted for any governmental reason (military, security clearance, arrest, etc.), that person is assigned an FBI reference number. When the Joker is arrested in The Dark Knight, they run his fingerprints, which show nothing. This destroys the possibility that he was a military veteran.
Other than that, this is a phenomenal interpretation and dissection of the movie series. Very insightful, excellent points made!

Now its got me thinking, after The Joker "survived the ambush he finds a way to his military and any other files containing his identity and destroys them to keep his identity a secret" and that could possibly explain why The Batman gets no matches when he scans The Jokers face from the bank camera. I *_really_* like your theory, its officially head cannon for me from now 😂

"Roz" not "Raysh." I was gonna say that pronouncing Ra's al-Ghul as "Raysh" changes the meaning from Head of the Demon to Feather of the Demon.

My favorite bit of symbolism in the series is the opening of Batman Begins.
It very clearly invokes biblical imagery from the Fall of Man in Genesis. A boy and a girl in a garden. The boy takes an object from the girl, which causes the fall of the boy whereby he becomes aware of his vulnerability. The boy’s father then finds him in the garden and covers him up.
The bats become symbolically tied to this fall when they attack him out of fear. This is important because this event instills a fear of bats in young Bruce, which will later cause him and his parents to leave the opera early, which will cause Bruce’s parents to die at the hands of Joe Chill, which is the event that causes Bruce to become aware of the problem of evil/corruption in the world. It is, as in the Bible story, the ultimate result of the fall of the man. The bats, therefore, become an elemental symbol that represents the evil and corruption that is a result of the fall of man, which is why Bruce is afraid and traumatized by them.
What’s EVEN MORE genius about this symbolism is that it is dual-layered. To a comic fan, they may not see the biblical imagery because they see young Bruce fall into a cave and become swarmed by bats as simply familiar imagery. This part of Bruce’s history, I believe, was first introduced in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. HOWEVER, Christopher Nolan himself cited a comic by Dennis O’Neil entitled “The Man Who Falls” (Secret Origins Vol. 2) as his “jumping off point” for the story of Batman Begins (this comic covers a bit of Batman’s history and introduces the Henry Ducard character). This one issue story from O’Neil referenced back to TDKR where Bruce fell into the cave and expanded that event to have further relevance.
So, the opening of Batman Begins perfectly marries a Batman comic from the late ‘80s about “The Man Who Falls” with the ancient Hebrew story “The Fall of Man” in order to provide the psychological setup for Bruce Wayne’s character, and the events that would push him to put on a mask and fight crime.
This is multilayered and sophisticated, but all of these influences blend so seamlessly that most don’t even see it… yet it all makes sense contextually in the story! And it’s not flashy either. It’s just enough to lend psychological credibility to the Batman. This is why I think Batman Begins is the most unappreciated of the series. It was already doing this ambitious stuff, but people’s most recent experience with Batman movies at the time was “let’s kick some ice” so they didn’t know they should be looking for deeply spiritual and psychological symbolism. Yet it’s not totally out of left field because they were doing it in Superman 1978 with the decision to marry the stories of Moses and Jesus together to bring this story of American folklore to a large blockbuster. It’s so much better than a movie that probably had a Happy Meal toy had any right to be

The opening with the bats flying past the bat signal emphasises the bat in batman. The next scene with Bruce and Rachel emphasises the man in batman.

I'm just glad The Batman 2022 won't be going to HBO Max so that when we can go back to theatres again, we can see the film in all of its glory in a true theatrical experience.
