  • Can Black Metal Vocals Hurt your Throat? We've all been listening to this myth and here is my opinion about it. There is also one situation i did not mention in the video, and that's when i played one live show and one of the black metal vocalists said that the guy we played with is going to destroy his throat, that was 5 years ago and the guy is still singing. I guess he was jelaous, because his vocals were phenomenal :P

Drink alot during your practice. Natural Water on roomtemperature and a lot of it :)
Don't know which technique you're using I do fc, and I can say in the beginning it may feel a bit itchy or even slightly hurt but thats for about the first days. If you have heavier, long lasting pain you're doing it wrong.
I totally didnt give a shit about drinking from where I started so my throat was not that thankful.
I can just speak for fc/death, think Black metal kind of more uses some fry variation. With FC it sounds good also, but fry is easier and has more variations on the higher register, I can't do it (without fucking up my tonsils) anyway, with FC / death 2-3 hours without any problems right now.
It's all about finding a technique that fits, don't overdo (don't push if your throat is dry, itchy or whatever) / drink while practice, practice as much as possible and go for your own sound.
Practice is everything, you will sound like garbage for a longer period of time, be prepared for that, especially if you're doing FC its easy to get the right distortion but takes a lot of time and effort to make it sound the way you wanna have it.
      Hope that helps

I learned to do BM vocals the raw way and of course, i would shred my throath. But the more you do them the less they hurt. Also, im early. No one cares.

When I first sang for my BM band's demo, I was a bit hoarse for the next hours but I already knew about the diaphragm thing. In the second demo, I managed to scream my ass off the whole day of recording and not hurt my throat. So make sure to learn some theory and put it to practice!

The thing about it hurting only if you don't do it properly, is kind of true. Of course, the first time will be a bit difficult and it will hurt a little bit, but if you find your technique, you will be able to do it, even on the first try. But if you just jump into it and scream at the top of your lungs without practice, you will fuck up your throat. But there are also many ways to minimize pain.
First of all, if it hurts, then stop and try again later. You will find, that you will be able to push further and further. I know, I couldn't go very high when I started, but now I sometimes scare myself with how high I can go. And there's still room for going higher, it's only a matter of time and practice.
Get hydrated, keep your throat wet. Pain usually comes when your throat dries up and gets too coarse. Surprisingly, water isn't the best thing to combat this. I find semi-cold milk much more effective. I also noticed, that I can go much further after eating greasy foods, while dry salty foods ruin my performance.
And of course, warm up, otherwise you may run out of breath. And once you run out of breath, not only will your throat start hurting, you will also sound like arse.
TL:DR - Yes it can ruin your throat, but only if you're a fucking idiot.

Agree. Gradual practice in pronouncing the words helps too for it gave more control especially when changing tones and timing, also trying find the style that fits your voice originality is the best path.

Yeah when I was teaching myself how to do it, it took me awhile to actually figure it out (because I was listening to music and then trying to copy/figure it out) It hurt, once or twice, but after awhile I found my technique found ways where it doesn't hurt.

After developing your own style and practicing it for quite awhile it doesn't become painful, it just becomes a normal thing.
And people who say stuff like "hurrdurr if it doesn't hurt ur not doing it right" are bullshitting. I mean, it's not gonna feel like the most pleasant thing at first but your throat will develop with plenty of practice (and water) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m naturally a lot better at death growls and can do yell screams but actually became interested in black metal so I wanted to learn it but ended up just learning fry screaming you can get some pretty awesome high black metal sounding screams but I think Most important factor is to scream the way you scream and then let your artistic sense drive the way you pronounce things because I feel pronunciation it’s probably one of the most important factors to your metal screams. Anyway thanks for this video man This genuinely made me laugh my ass off actually when I first started screaming I screamed with my throat even when it hurt But then eventually I sat there and was like these vocalists I looked up to for inspiration are able to do this for hours I can only do one song and eventually I learned how to do metal vocals the proper way.
