Very useful, thank you. My cistern had been taking a long time to fill (about ten minutes), with only a fine jet of water coming through. On examination I found the diaphragm was split. I fitted a replacement (price about £3.99) and with the help of this video it works perfectly. Saved me a few pounds on a plumber!

Do you have any tips for removing the big plastic screw? Mine appears to be stuck fast.

Water pump pliers - unscrew in correct direction. Don't overtighten - it will only pinch the rubber seal and weaken it.

@@johnelliveps8002 the lady asked about removal - not refit. If the thing was put on too tight and you need a bit of leverage then water pump pliers will give you that.

Mine was also tough to remove, so I put limescale remover at both ends of big white plastic screw, and tried to remove 10 min later. Could not move it, so I tapped it gently with the handle of a spanner, whilst holding with my other hand the body of the whole of the part, being of plastic and therefore breakable, and voila....it was easy to undo. I have now replaced the washer, although I had to use the original white plastic part with the new washer, and it is all working fine. Do check when you put back, the white lever that you have to remove in order to change the washer, because if it is in the wrong position, the water will not stop running. I had to come back here, and check the position of the said lever, so all working fine now, and have saved myself a plumber's call out charge.
