  • I recorded this video to capture history! This is a video demonstration of a 16mm Bell and Howell projector, from the late 1940's or early 1950's. This is the model 285 which has a transformer-less AC input power section for it's vacuum tube audio amplifier. The schematic can be found at the following web address and I hope it is still available for you, but no guarantee.

The movie you were showing I can recognize the music played. John Seely was known for stock music in cartoons during the mid-late 1950's.

B&H 285 Series was produced from 1952-1955; it followed the Model 185 built from 1949-1951. The 285 Specialist (Optical Sound) shown in the Video was produced from 1953-55. B&H also produced an Optical/Magnetic Model (202 Specialist in the same timr frame. These Projectors continued the Manual Oil Lubrication utilizing the 3 Snap Cap Oil Fillers on top of the Projector as well as the 3 sprocket oiling holes that required the operator to tilt the projector to the left (sprockets Vertical) before adding oil through the hole openings. Very important to keep these projectors oiled and cleaned for Maximum Life Span which could be your own as well as your Children if done frequently. These Projectors were built with Metal Gears and Aluminum Rollers; no Nylon Components like later Projectors; One of the reasons B&H gave them lifetime Warranties. From the looks of the Film you were projecting; The Film Gate/etc. needs a good cleaning. There is a Plated Steel Lever that opens and closes the Lens Assembly. The Lens is easily removed by Turning the Locking Screw to the left and twisting the Lens Counter Clockwise. The Filmgate is removable for Cleaning also. Don't use anything more than alcohol for Cleaning and Camera Lens tissues should be used for cleaning both ends of the Lens. Sometimes these Projectors after sitting for years not being used will run eractic on startup; surging and not holding steady Silent/Sound Speed. This most of the time can be Cured by removing the Governed Motor Cover and observing 2 sets of points (similar to a Car Distributor) If you take a Woman's Nail File or Points File and make a few passes between the points set; The Motor will run it's proper RPM. 2 sets of points, one for Sound Speed (24fps) and one for Silent Speed (18fps) This will remove any oxidation that may have formed ...Your Projector looks in Pristine Condition and as I mention before will last more than a lifetime if properly oiled/cleaned and Stored. The 285 was probably used by more Schools/Colleges/Univerities than any other Mfger in that time Period. Extreme Workhorses. I have several of them in my own 16mm Projector Collection ...
