That is passion. I don't think anyone could possibly say that this man doesn't play from his heart, write from his heart, and sing from his heart. That is the voice of a tortured soul who feels very strongly for the cryptic words that he sings.
Okay, I had no idea who this "Bellamy" fellow was, so I had to look him up. He seems pretty badass at music theory, which Jeff Mangum isn't so fluent in, since let's take this song as an example, is just one chord. HOWEVER, Jeff Mangum can fit 1000000000000 times more feeling and soul into one chord, than Mr. Bellamy could ever hope to find in complex scales and arpeggios. I rest my case.
The digestion machine means to me pretty much what the american corporate machine is, stuff goes in at the mouth and comes out through a bunch of assholes as shit. Thank you!
ya he has alittle scary moment at 4:45, but he jumps right back into it. I love this guy and wish him the best. Every song I hear of his and NMH give me chills
I noticed that when I was young and after playing a lot of music in the following years, I figured out what happened to him at that moment. When your singing close to the mic, and I imagine moisture has a bit to do with it, the mic can sometimes shock the piss out of your lips. I’m about 98% sure that’s what happened.
Jeff supposedly gets a lot of his inspiration from otherworldly empathy... Sometimes I really wonder who ends up doing the singing... him or if he's just a vessel.
Heavy on the haunting. "I need to paste your skin around the mailbox," he sings, along with "I need to feel your skin against all that I retch out." So, this Ed Gein wannabe wants to puke all over someone, then turn that person's skin into a mailbox cover.
aside from the brass players, during 96-98 i don't recall any other line-up performing officially that didn't include jeremy on drums, julian on gleeful chaos/banjo/saw, and scott on bass/brass/etc. the live songs are so unique-sounding; they are the colors to his drawings. there is an interview on here with jeff from England in 98 where he directly says the live band is the ideal version, but the project is his. If you want proof check out the live "Snow Song Pt. 1" vs. the EP.
And rightfully so, especially with the lyric "I need to paste your skin around the mailbox." Remind you of anyone? Maybe a guy from Wisconsin named Ed?
He wrote a song named "She Ate A Lot Of Acid". The entire Elephant 6 collective is inextricably related to psychedelic drugs, and anyone who believes otherwise is deluding themselves. I can quote multiple interviews with Will Cullen Hart, Bill Doss, and Jeff Mangum where they allude to pot, acid, mushrooms, or more than one. Also, if you had even the slightest clue as to what acid is and the way it changes a person, you'd realize how stupid the "oh you just want to be cool" argument is.
@LeBaronDePropane Jeff IS Neutral Milk Hotel, buddy. All of the other musicians were from the Elephant 6 collective and filled in where needed. NMH wasn't a 'band' in the traditional sense, just a monicker for the project. Jeff's songs stand upon their own, he doesn't need anybody else - just take a listen to the Live at Jittery Joe's album - that's why he's an amazing songwriter.
why are people comparing bellamy and mangum? they're two totally different people. Jeff mangum and NMH are amazing. that's a fact. Bellamy is amazing too though. Why can't everyone just let people enjoy the music they want to without comparing and shooting down others favorite bands?
Yeah, it is nothing but a shock that is very common if you play electrical guitar while singing and the guitar is not ground bound. I do not see him as having done either acids of mushrooms at this song. I see it as I see most NMH video recordings. Intense. And truthful.
Dr Avelaz I see an artist responding ones music. I don't really see unusal or bizarre behavior. wondering what are you are seeing that might come up with the psychosis comment.
were you serious-- him showing "sign of psychosis"? i didnt pick up on that. i liked the song. for some reason, he strikes me as a modern day jim morrison. not musically, but just his mannerisms.
Looks like he is tripping pretty hard. After watching this go watch Jimi Hendrix at the Miami Pop festival. Absolutely amazing performance, and this isn't even a song I like by Jeff. I don't think this is psychosis either, just some potent 'cid or maybe, less likely, psilocybin.
@LeBaronDePropane Jeff Mangum + Guitar = Neutral Milk Hotel...I'm not really sure why this is so hard a concept to grasp. You could replace any musician that has accompanied him in the various NMH tours and nobody could tell the difference. You remove Mangum from the equation and the whole thing falls apart. Jeff isn't the "brain" of NMH's "body", he's the "Ego", the inextricable essence that makes NMH, NMH. Anyone who has listened to his music for any length of time would tell you that.
this is the only band that i love listening to live versions more than than the record versions. the whole band is so amazing
15 years ago… wow

At first I thought it was insanity in his eyes, but now I realize that it's just an overload of brilliance.
"We are wrecking in your rover, we are swimming in your speakers.
We are sticky stuff all over, coming out from all your features."
as an added bonus you can even see him moving his fingers on the fretboard. Incredible
Hauntingly beautiful

I fucking love the quality of this video, so aesthetic
Astounding. He is the most inspirational person and has changed me for the better.
Everyone is aware that Jeff requires no oxygen, but after watching this, it also appears he blinking is not necessary.
How is this the best NMH on youtube? More please
4:44 he gets shocked by the mic again
Jeff is amazing.
The digestion machine means to me pretty much what the american corporate machine is, stuff goes in at the mouth and comes out through a bunch of assholes as shit. Thank you!
haha i love that tape

Best song with 2 chords ever.
beautiful babies, all filled with angels...
Jeff's jumper is brilliant
he has the biggest lung capacity than any man i know
i am absolutely obsessed with this live recording
this guy is just nicely in the moment
Jeff supposedly gets a lot of his inspiration from otherworldly empathy...
Sometimes I really wonder who ends up doing the singing... him or if he's just a vessel.
Lol does Julian have a train whistle?
goddamn this is so cool...
plus his sweater is win.
I want that sweater real bad.
THE most hauntingly gorgeous writing ever composed.

@@briancrawford8751 I think he means it in a phycadelic way, he mentions the mailman in another song so he must've had some sort of impact on him
Weirdly this helps me sleep
Me too! Nmh helps me calm down enough to sleep. :>

art as transcendant.
Turns out there's a soundboard rip of this performance online. If you can sync it up with the video it sounds amazing.
I'm officially frightened
awe inspiring.
he looks like he is about to pass out
Jeffs shockingly good. Pun intended....

beautiful
this video didnt used to be un-synced. i dont know what happened.
I think it's more that the microphone couldn't handle his passion.
I'm going to stick with that.
so powerful
guys this song doesn't have just one chord! Patience is a virtue! Go to 3:30 awww yeah, feel the change
wow, it's sid barrett all over again...
I would be scared shitless if I saw a guy singing to me like that.
And rightfully so, especially with the lyric "I need to paste your skin around the mailbox." Remind you of anyone? Maybe a guy from Wisconsin named Ed?
If someone sang like this to me id propose immediately.
want sweater!

ED sent me here.
Ya the mic shocked him. Its not uncommon, and it startles you every time.
That jumper he's wearing is so 90's.

Damn straight.
the hell is that that julian is playing?!?!
Psychosis? No.
yeah I saw it at about 4:45... that shit hurts man.
is this just one chord the entire song?
hah awesome
Well for the first couple minutes, yes. You can clearly see him changing chords later in the song.
A to D to A to D later in the song
Long shot here but does anybody have a clue what Julian is playing here? Some kind of wooden box he’s blowing into??
*THAT blinking
my goddddd my goddddddd my goddddddd oh my godddd
He could be not tripping and just in a crazy state.
He looked really sad
no he doesnt have schizophrenia but he does have depression and thats why he stopped playing, very sadly
@FolkMusicWins
The argument covered both aspects; he considered Bellamy more genuine.
This song makes more sense if you've actually heard the demo of it. he's not nuts. he's just...um...yeah
i think that the mic shocked him...its really does happen
The microphone was shocking him...
agreed.
did u have some trouble syncing the audio?
oh my goddddddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@AustinShirkey I found the same one at Bon Ton!
Guys, how do I tune an instrument?
Yo I'm 8 years late but you turn the little nob things at the top 👉👉
He died of H overdose...he did a lot of solo stuff before the end.
Traveled a decade in time to say.. Whaaaaa?
He must have recovered from this.. he seems fine and good now on the videos from last night's performance for the Occupy Wall Street protesters.
@lateralus462 @Whole Lotta Love technically has 2 chords.

yeah thats really weird.

I'm not finding it.
Does that disturb you?
just send a link or something.
you say "unfortunate" I say "precious."
Poh-tay-toh, Poh-tah-toh.
i don't think he even did acid
of course. the accuser even went as far as to mock two headed boy. what are kids coming to today?
2:38
That was reaal.
technically
@angelzyt43 cool!
The other day, someone insisted that Matt Bellamy is a deeper and more talented musician than Jeff.
Do you have evidence of people making fun of him? I've never seen it.
Dr Avelaz

Such an unfortunate choice of Jumper.

yeah ha ha that provoked a horrible image in my head
maybe you should support NMH and buy it.
@sjt900 He looks like he got punched by a ghost. Like, right in the face. The ghost was probably like, "use another god damned chord!"
so strange that the stalker becomes the stalked...i shall turn the tables back to the way the sweet lord satan intended my dear fecal friend.
