  • Our 3rd time attack video. Huge change has resulted from shooting this! I think this is our best video so far. This one really pushed our limits with equipment and available time. Big thanks to my buds over at Tamiya Legends and Vintage Tamiya and other RC for the Frog pics.

    I feel that a track with a longer straight to allow full speed would make a difference to results since it would allow for top speed differences and high speed cornering.

    Awesome video, mate.
    I live in London. I watched the Tamiya video's in Hamleys and was quite poor, so I had to want the grasshopper. As I learned more, I wanted the hornet, then, the Frog. I saved up about £70 as a 14 year old, which was very hard being an avid arcade player ( ;) ) and I got the Frog on a a cold day in January at Beatties in Holborn.
    Me and my Mum, best day ever.

      Would love to get one of those Betties RC bags one day...Unfortunately they are fairly hard to find here in the states (at least not all clapped out). For me it was a place called Allied Hobbies. Place was packed to the ceiling with Tamiya kits. I would drag mom and dad in there whenever I had the opportunity. Still etched in my memory bank like it was yesterday. Thanks for the view and comment friend. Appreciate it.

    Fantastic video! I'm in the process of restoring my original Frog. That cars Achilles heel was really the resisters. After jumping off a 3-ft high ramp we had one or two of the resistors would pop out launching the car at high speed.

    I’ve still got mine from the 80s which lives on a shelf, but I’m building one to drive from a box of bits and parts cars. To be fair to the old Frog and others like it, they are much happier on smoother ground without the big jumps. I’d love to see it on your track without the jumps but with a mix of surface types. I’ll be running mine on grass, dirt and sand. I’ve also got some Brat wheels and tyres for asphalt. Love the concept of the channel pitching the cars against each other and creating a leader board 👍

      @VINTAGEBACKYARDRC  Před rokem +1

      Honestly contemplating doing something like this. I would like to run the srb cars on the new track...but can't beat them up on the big jumps anymore. Then just run the "pro cars" with the ramps. Obviously this messes up the continuity of the channel a bit. The solution there would be running the silvercan cars for a 3rd time all over again...lol.
      Will probably put it up for a vote soon and see what people want.

    I had one in the 80s and I can definitely say the car was fragile but I suspect because I only drove it on the street outside my house and not on dirt. Every time I ran it something had to be fixed or adjusted. Eventually the car developed the gear box grind and I didn’t know what caused the issue or how to go fix it and lost interest in it. The car sat unused for about 10 years before I gave it away to a guy in my Toyota car club who had a big collection of RC cars.

  • @jcshobbiesandrecreation5873

    Great video. Really happy I found your channel as I'm a huge vintage RC guy. The failures with the Fox gearbox are not uncommon. The issue is from the gearbox flexing and allowing the gears to move around. I learned with my Brat that the gearbox will absolutely not tolerate a throttle on landing even once on any surface that has traction. I have a baggie full of gear box parts I picked up as I would normally kill the Spur gear at least once per run. There are a few people making the braces at this point. My track has a jumps that a Frog probably should not be launching off...compounded with some high traction landing surfaces (not good on the gears). It's been neat to see what stuff holds up and what does not. The minimal suspension of the super vintage and lower lever cars seem to be the main issue. No question! The motor was way too high, as was the radio gear. That lead to some really weird handling properties.
      This was my first kit, my VERY first was a 1982 vintage Radio Shack Dune Buggy! It was a hoot! But it ate alkalines like I eat potato chips... My 2nd kit was a Hotshot (mentioned in the Hot Shot vid). For giggles, I got the Fast Attack Vehicle. I never raced that, it was just for fun.
      I dabbled with a 1/12th scale Tamiya pan car, the Toyota TOMS car. FAST little bugger.
      I then elevated to an RC10. I figured out how to build the Vara-lock diff the right way. It just takes a lot of time! But when done, the gearbox will be so damned smooth, you won't want to upgrade!
      Then it was a series of RC10 pan cars, with an LT4 being my last one before pan car racing died 20 years ago. Next was a budget oval F1 class we ran... I started with the Tamiya F1, but it was just too basic and lacked adjustment, so I upgraded to an HPI F1. Sweet chassis.
      I then did a TC3, a B2 and most recently, a Tamiya F1 and now an Associated B64. Still dabbling, but I stopped racing back in 2001 when my older brother was diagnosed with brain cancer... priorities changed and RC racing seems trivial.
      I really want to justify a 1/5th scale F1 car. They are trick!!! Expensive, but trick. Did I mention expensive?
