    George, I loved this “what sold” video. And a want to say, when it comes to the sensitive items that have the potential to be offensive to some, I think you handle these things in a very respectful way. Both with your reaction to EBay’s inconsistency, and the appreciation to the history behind the former normals which are (thankfully) no longer normal. I really do think you do a great job to realize the importance of this history in a reverent and understanding way. I’m in the camp that values this attitude, and yet I can see and understand the flip side where some can be offended, and want to be respectful of that group as well. Long comment to say, “bravo” to your diplomacy. 💚💚💚

      Thank you so much for understanding! I feel it is important to not sweep such things under the rug, it's a fine line between denial and not wanting to hurt feelings.

    In my shop, I sometimes sell German WW2 memorabilia with a certain image on it. I do not at all subscribe to Hitler's philosophy, I just believe in preserving history. Interestingly enough, I have found that the majority of the buyers of this merchandise are of the Jewish faith. They also believe that history should be preserved so that chapter is never repeated.

      It's a hard thing. I've found the same thing with a lot of WWII memorabilia, the people collecting it are usually doing so to demonstrate what they overcame!

      If I were Jewish, anything with a reminder of Hitler would be the last thing I would want to look at. Not being Jewish, it's the last thing I want to look at. But that's just me. Obviously, others feel differently.

    Ebay's policies are so inconsistently applied. I once had a snuff bottle yanked - a snuff bottle! - and had to basically beg for it to be reinstated (so long as I said it was empty and for collectors only). Never mind that so many others are out there. Ah well. Thanks for another great video. :)

    EBay like most things anymore is overly ridiculous in trying not to offend people in the world we live in today. I'm black and the Gold Dust Twins do not offend me in any way, shape or form. I understand the context in which the advertisement took place and I think things like that should be preserved for historical purposes. Good Lord....🙄

      Hi, Dayna! Thank you for saying that. I'm concerned about how black people feel about these items, but the black folks I've met all seem willing to have a real conversation about them. I've honestly only had hysterical reactions from (guilty feeling?) white folks.

    I am a white woman who acquired a print of 24 little blackbirds-black kids in a tree. I didn’t really want it and I didn’t want to take a chance it would go to a racist person who might think it was funny. I donated it to an African American museum in Grand Rapids to be used as a demonstration of racism that was so accepted not that long ago.

    • @timhazeltine3256
      @timhazeltine3256 Před 2 lety +2

      What a great solution. Your post brings up an important issue for some of us, which is avoiding having these items end up with people who use them to denigrate others because of their ethnicity or faith. The sister of my late uncle by marriage was murdered by the nazis, so I find nazi memorabilia especially offensive, consequently, I completely support eBay's policy. However, I agree that eBay has done an abysmal job in providing clear guidelines for sellers and developing a consistent and functional algorithm for flagging these items before they are listed.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  Před 2 lety +1

      @Tim Hazeltine Exactly! eBay is entitled to set policies they feel will protect they and their customers from harm of whatever sort. It would just be nice if they would tell us what those policies really mean, when I read their list of what was offensive I was still left scratching my head as to why mine was...but the other 20 items like it that they sold and collected commission on wasn't? If Gold Dust Twins are not allowed, then the algorithm clearly could be programmed to tell you that before you list, not after they've already collected your listing fee.

      That's fantastic! Exactly the right place for it to go. I sold my entire Longaberger collection of baskets on ebay many years ago. Sold a few smaller pieces of their pottery on ebay too. The bigger pieces I sold locally to a mother & daughter who were still enthusiastic collectors. But ebay's format was different then, and it seemed easier & less complicated. Everything changes, I guess, but I think I'll just stick to buying the occasional item on ebay.

      I confess, I did not. I realize the Post Office wants that from us. Unfortunately, it makes the packages much heavier and customers complain about the expense when we do that, so I packed it with inches of bubble wrap. If it had been the bowl that was broken, I'd have figured it was my fault...but they broke the stem through 4" of bubble wrap, I don't even know how that happens

    Censorship is always bad. So are Life magazines no longer allowed to be sold? Many have illustrations like that or "worse" (I don't find anything wrong with them at all but for those who do). eBay is a terribly unfair company towards its sellers so maybe it should work on its own behaviour before deleting our history in the name of virtue signaling.
