Thank you for this Lon! Here in the future of 2023, I've been pulling my hair out for weeks trying to add local extras for TV shows, scanning my library like a fool when I should have been refreshing my metadata. It's a good thing Plex sponsored you to do this video, because apparently it was impossible for them to put this crucial piece of information in the actual support document 🙃

This is great for having multiple cuts of the same movie on my server, for example I can have the Theatrical Cut of Alien as the main title and add the Director's Cut as an extra. I didn't like having multiple entries of the same movie so this works and didn't realize this was possible, thanks Lon!

OMG, thank you for this! I'm just starting the whole TV shows on Plex journey and Plex's own documentation on this is about as clear as mud. I'm luckily only a few shows in at this point so it won't be too hard to go back and re-name/restructure everything. Weird that that they still haven't fixed this for the TV clients.

A year or so ago, I turned off Plex’s extras feature because it usually just doubled the number of extras on my screen. The extras from Plex had the same thumbnails and even had the same name I had given to my ripped files. I wasn’t aware that Plex is starting to allow similar features for TV extras. Thanks. Thus far, I have created dummy episodes to handle TV extras when I want to associate the extra with a specific season and used the Special 00 coding when that isn’t important.

I couldn't get this to work until I did one key thing, put the trailers or extra content in a unique folder with one movie. I normally just have one "Movies" folder containing all movies. You can't just add a file with the same name as the movie but with the "-trailer" extension (for example) and expect it to work (although, that would be ideal in my opinion). Instead, I needed to create a sub folder for a movie and move the movie and the trailer to that sub folder. Then it worked without any issue.

Thanks Lon for the tip. If I understand correctly, that means that each movie needs to be in its own separate folder, correct? I have been putting all my movies in one single folder, so if I wanted to add any extras, I will need to create a separate folder for that movie specifically.

Great video Lon, I'm just waiting for them to allow you to edit the name of the extra rather than having to go with just the file name - particularly when they make you use the episode code in the name to link the extra.
This is a good step for Plex - as the extras on bluray were one thing that would make me want to get the disc out again after the main rip.

@@LonSeidman Something tells me that I should have known, lol :D
It's a bit off topic, but what would you say were five of your most like TNG episodes?
For me (and not in any specific order) they were:
      1. The Pegasus
      2. Cause and Effect
      3. Phantasms
      4. Genesis
      5. Timescape
Side note: There's actually a recipe for a cellular peptide cake with mint frosting.
It's a shame we won't ever be able to see a 1080p remastered version of DS9 but I'm glad we have the remastered TNG episodes.

So as far as the extras and such for movies, do you have to have a Plex Pass for that that feature to be enabled? I'm on my desktop and it's not working. I have a folder "Dirty Harry' the movie and featurette are both inside. The movie is just "Dirty Harry" - the extra is "Dirty Harry The Original-featurettes.mp4"
And when I click on the movie, in plex, it does not show up under it as extra.

Great video Lon! I have been doing this for a while. The integration of local extras is awesome. Also something you may not know is that some TV extras/specials can be named S00-e01. You can find this at thetvdb.com/

Using thetvdb codes was the only method that worked for me, been struggling getting this to work for days, followed the videos and it still would not show up for me with a DVD TV show i ripped, got the codes from tvdb and bingo. My extras and out-takes show up fine
