    This is a theme I like too. Britt Marie was Here by Fredrik Backman, Up and Down by Terry Fallis and Albatross by Terry Fallis are three of my faves. Death in her Hands and Mary are still on my TBR. 😊💙

      Albatross is on my TBR and then I'm sure I will continue with Terry Fallis' works after that. Britt Marie is another one on my TBR. I didn't realize it fit this theme! That's exciting!

    Ottessa Moshfegh has some way about her writing that just draws me in. I liked Death in Her Hands. I will read Amina, Enda Fisher & Ship of Magic one day. Great video!

    I read Amina and enjoyed it. Not only is she "older" but she isnt your typical size zero, tiny, with golden hair, etc...
    😉 I liked Killers of a Certain Age. Retired group of retired assassins.
    Thursday Murder Club series has some very spunky sassy older females. Murder solving, not fantasy at all.
    I need Edna Fisher.
    Another great, fun, entertaining video. 🤗

      I did enjoy Amina's differences to the normal female protagonist. It added such texture to her character.
      I've added Killers of a Certain Age to my TBR.
      I tried Thursday Murder Club and didn't enjoy it. I just couldn't get the story to stick in my head. I kept zoning out.
      You do need Edna Fisher!!
      Thanks for watching Lynn!!

    oh yessssssssssssssss older female characters are so good. I definitely thought of Mary when i saw your title!
    Mothered features an adult (around 30 i think) and her mom and was good (i found it a bit boring but very creepy but still, it was enjoyable!)
    Pizza girl also features two female characters, one that's very young and one that's like 40-ish but very good, very enjoyable!!
    I have had the adventures of amina al sirafi in my TBR for so long but never really read it or went for it but u made me very excited now!!

      I'll look up Mothered and Pizza Girl. I haven't heard of either of them!
      Also, yes! Please read Amina. I do think you will enjoy it. If you are in the mood for fantasy! The audio is also great!

    Of the ones you’ve read, I’ve read and enjoyed all of them except The Remarkable Retirement…, which I did purchase but haven’t started. I would say Liveship Traders is a bit of a stretch for this, but it’s an incredible series.
    You might like Remarkably Bright Creatures, Iona Iverson’s Rules for Commuting, Mrs. March, The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot, and The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett. They all center older female characters, several of them are in their 70’s or 80’s.

      Good to know about Liveship Traders. I was unsure as I found it mentioned on Reddit.

    I also like this in stories. I have Amina Al Sirafi on my TBR and you put Edna Fisher on my radar. Two books with older female protagonists that I read and enjoyed in the past year are: Race the Sands by Sarah Beth Durst (standalone fantasy, fun concept) and Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold (book 2 in the World of the Five Gods - book 1 is The Curse of Chalion and has and older male disabled protagonist, but also has some prominent older characters both male and female).

      @Danni.Dabbles  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Adding Race the Sands and The World of Five Gods to my TBR. I've been wanting to read another Sarah Beth Durst and The World of the Five Gods sounds amazing. Thanks for the recommendations! I hope you enjoy Amina and Edna as much as I did!

      @@Danni.Dabbles I just discovered Sarah Beth Durst last year. I read all the Renthia books after reading Race the Sands because I had so much fun with it. I have The Bone Maker on my TBR and have my eye on her new one coming out. I really like her stories (well, the adult ones - and maybe I'll try one of her YA)

    I just started Amina al-Sirafi from your multiple recommendations of it - thank you. I suggest the Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters. They’re cozy historical mysteries, generally set in Egypt with a first-person narrator. As the only daughter of an Egyptian scholar, Amelia prepared her father’s books and papers. After his death, she decides to go to Egypt and see it for herself. And things happen, as they will. The mysteries are good, but the excellence here is in the voice of Amelia and the overall character work. The tone is not unlike Lady Trent, only more so. The series is very linear, starting when Amelia is in her 30’s and roughly the 1890s, progressing through her 50’s-ish. The audio books are excellent. Peters was an Egyptologist herself, so really writes it all well, bringing in some historical characters.

      Yay! I can't wait to hear what you think of Amina. So glad you picked it up!
      Adding Amelia to my TBR now. That sounds amazing! I haven't read many books set in Egypt and knowing the author has experience there is incredible! Thank you!

      I loved Amina so much! What a great book. Love her character, the story, the companions and their family - so very 5 stars! I will buy the next whenever it comes out. I bought City of Brass on the strength of Amina and will be interested to see how Chakraborty wrote earlier in her career and in a different series. Thanks again for championing this book!

    So far, the only book that I've read...that fits your criteria...was City of Blades, which I just finished a few days ago. Loved that story and especially THAT character.
    I can offer you an older male character that fits your criteria...that I just finished too...and it was for the EXACT reasons why you want more in female stories. The series is called...The Spell Knight Trilogy (The Last Spell Knight: Purpose and The Last Spell Knight: Legacy...so far). I loved the main character, Archibald BECAUSE he's old and not everything is as easy as it once was. I'm getting older, and this is a character that fits my viewpoint, so I agree with this idea of looking for older protagonists. Thank you for this.
    How about The Lady Trent series? I cannot remember how old Lady Trent was supposed to be (I've only read the first two. I got distracted).
    Again, a wonderful discussion being had, here. Thank you.😊

    • @Danni.Dabbles
      @Danni.Dabbles  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yay! Good to know that the continuation of the series centers around a good MC!
      I looked up The Spell Knight Trilogy! I like the cover art! And he is a monster slayer. Eee! I'll have to see if they have it on Kindle as my library doesn't have a copy. Thanks for the rec!
      I did think about adding Lady Trent to my list but I thought it may be cheating as she is young in many of her memoirs. I suppose it is from her older POV though so it should still count! Love that series!
      Thanks for joining in Graff!

    It's great when you can identify an aspect you love. The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin and The Winter Road by Adrian Selby would fit, but both are quite dark. Something lighter is Miss Percy's Guide by Quenby Olson. Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold might interest you. Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon is a sci-fi with an older woman. Not much butt kicking, but an interesting premise. If you don't mind cosy mystery, The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is really good and sometimes funny. I hope you get some good suggestions.

    • @Danni.Dabbles
      @Danni.Dabbles  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I completely forgot about The Fifth Season. Miss Percy's Guide is on my TBR, but it has been difficult for me to find a copy. I just added The World with Five Gods series to my TBR. Remnant Population does sound interesting. Living out your days in a population of one would be an interesting story! Adding that to my TBR as well. I tried The Thursday Murder Club and ended up DNFing it. I haven't had luck with cozy mysteries lately. Thanks for the recommendations!

    Two in the cozy mystery category I loved are Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto and Glory Be by Danielle Arceneux, both featuring non white elderly female sleuths/ protagonists. Also recently read An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good by Helen Tursten, which is a series of short stories/ vignettes of what can only be described as a senior citizen serial killer. Translated from Swedish I think? All a good time. Love an older lady tired of your shit!

    I have a running list of books I'd like to get to where the women are at least 40 and in many cases much older - I've read some and others are on my evergreen TBR list :)
    Helene Tursten - An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good (fabulous), Velma Wallis - Two Old Women: An Alaska Legend of Betrayal, Courage, and Survival (divine), Fredrik Backman - Britt-Marie was Here (frustratingly charmed)
    TBR -
    SF - Elizabeth Moon - Remnant Population, Kij Johnson - The Dream-Quest of Vellit Boe,
    FAN - Paladin of Souls - Lois McMaster Bujold, Dragonsbane-Barbara Hambly, The Maleficent Seven - Cameron Johnston, The Bone Maker - Sarah Beth Durst, Black Wolves - Kate Elliott, The Keeper's Six - Kate Elliott
    FIC - The One in a Million Boy - Monica Wood, Thursday Murder Club - Richard Osman
