Yep no joke, the opening is one of the most misleading theme in anime.
It's not really misleading if you pay attention to it. In the background, there are numerous dark things being shown such as ha going corpses and such. It's meant to show how almost desensitized to all of those dark things they are by fulfilling their duties and carrying on with their duties no matter what happens
The ending though nobody talks about the ending theme that shit is like the dark side of the coin

It's a shame this anime isn't more well known it's pretty good. The animation studio behind the anime were the same ones who worked on Death Note.
And claymore, black lagoon, hunter versus hunter, overlord, monster, and many others. Madhouse is the best anime studio.
