- The Palästinalied ("Palestine Song", also known as Kreuzlied "Song of the Cross") is a song written in the early 13th century by Walther von der Vogelweide, the most celebrated lyric poet of Middle High German literature. It is one of the few songs by Walther for which a melody has survived.
I tried to translate it as good as possible, but it was sometimes hard to translate those old medieval meanings and the version of this song is sometimes a bit different from the lyrics on Wikipedia. I hope you´ll still enjoy it!
The first line is Middle High German, the second modern German and on the bottom the English translation as always.

I love how the song takes us on a journey of this knight to the holy land. Imagine hearing all your life about the birthplace of the savior, the son of god. I try to imagine it, going from the woodlands of medieval Germany to the harsh desert of the Middle East to lay eyes the holy land. It must have been breath taken
Upon Walther's return to the Reich, he told this tale to the Kaiser who was so moved by his story that he gave him his own fiefdom and lordship so long as he'd tell his tale across the Reich. A fine reward for a good crusader
Einfach faszinierend wie unglaublich ähnlich sich die deutschen Sprachen über 25 Generationen noch sind, besonders der alte Satzbau ist höchst interessant. Ein bisschen Umdenken im Kopf und manche Dinge machen beim genauen Hinhören mehr Sinn als man denkt. Ich konnte damals den ganzen Text beim zweiten Mal verstehen ohne Text-Ablesen.
Ich kann es nur noch einmal sagen: Absolut faszinierend!
Ich stimme zu.
Lediglich das mit den Hunderten Generationen ist nicht ganz zutreffend. Vom Jahr 1200 (etwa) bis heute sind es 820 Jahre. Eine Generation wird mit etwa 32 Jahren gehandelt. Demach ist das Lied um die 25-26 Generationen alt. Es ist schon krass sich das vorzustellen. Seinen eigenen Stammbaum nur beliebige 25 Namen nach unten zu hüpfen und theoretisch auf einen Kreuzfahrer stoßen zu können. Oder halt einen Bauern oder Schmied, oder Knecht. Das wird es wohl - machen wir uns nichts vor - bei dem Meisten sein.

@@dererdi1981 Ich in einem einzigen Strang maximal bis 1700. Und bereits nach so wenigen Generationen gibt es schon so viele Stränge, die man sich gern mal angeschaut hätte.
@@neinnein9306 Oh, Verzeihung. Ich wusste nicht wie alt das Lied ist und habe mich deshalb grandios verschätzt. Naja, meine Mathe Note war nie berauschend und mit einer Verschätzung von 75% entspricht es auch meiner Traum- und Realitätsnote im Fach Mathe. :D Ich editiere mal dementsprechend meinen eigentlichen Kommentar, danke!

As a French with a good level of German I find the Old German phrase more logical as the subjunctive was used in the same way as French and Latin. Anyway I still love modern German because it has kept it's identity more than English, Dutch or the Scandinavian languages. The declensions and the subjunctive for instance, which are typically indo European
nah, Icelandic is way more Germanic than German is. Modern German has Latinisms and Hellenisms all over the place.

Beautiful medieval song, lovely! Thank you Dr Ludwig. Sounds like a prayer, an ode dedicated to the holy lands by the Crusader knights. When we talk about the Crusader Knights and Holy Lands, we think more of the Knights Templar, but we often forget the German Crusader Knights. Although I don't know German, but I find it very interesting to listen to old German, see how the language has evolved. It's really very interesting from a linguistic and historical point of view. I Can only agree. As a german native speaker I Can also add the interesting fact that since this was written 25-26 generations ago the german language has not changed that much. It is quite easy to understand compared to older english for example. At least as far as I can say that.
@@feliorserapheel6539 Some languages do change very quickly. To English you can add French, crusader-era French sounds almost Italian at times, ha!
Other languages that changed very little: Spanish (since 11th century, sans the pronunciation changes on czxj of the 14th), Polish (since even further), Standard Italian (since it was standardized in the 15th century)

What dialect of middle German was this song written in?
It wasn't a dialect, more like the court language and that was rather south and middle German back then.

It can mean, "three persons who each of them have their own name".

@@dr.ludwig The Crusaders tried to pass through Anatolia to go to Jerusalem, and the Turks were in charge of the Ayyubid and Mamluk armies.
Those were other Turk ethnicities, not modern Turks as in Turkey. You must be more specific then^^
